Kyôto, 1966. Young Hamaguchi works for a textile manufacturer while dreaming of becoming an artist, until an incident at the zoo forces his hand. Multi Eisner-nominee Taniguchi recalls his beginnings in manga and his youth spent in Tôkyô in the 60's in an account of his apprenticeship where all the finesse and elegance of the creator are united to illustrate those first emotions of adulthood. When Louis Vuitton decided to produce a series of deluxe travel books for the new century they invited only hand picked comic artists from around the world and placed them in settings unfamiliar to the artists to bring this vision to life. After his mother's death, Jiro Taniguchi discovers a beautifully lacquered box which contains what appear to be old photos and hand-drawn postcards of Venice. One photo of Piazza San Marco catches his eye. It is of a Japanese couple feeding a multitude of pigeons in the square dressed in what looked like 1930's styled clothes. Who were they? What relevance did they have for his mother? Armed with the contents of the lacquered box he travels to Venice to track down the places and events displayed in the images and to discover the identity of the young couple in the old photograph. With very few but well chosen words and his artist's eye for detail, Taniguchi portrays the Venice of today in a most deserving light. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Charlotte Salomon (Berlin, April 16, 1917 - Auschwitz, October, 10 1943) was a young Jewish artist from a prosperous family whose mother committed suicide when she was just nine-years-old. In 1938, increasing anti-semitic policies caused her to escape to the south of France to live with her grandparents. She began painting what became over 1000 gouaches consisting of 769 of the paintings depicting a somewhat fantastical autobiography preserving main elements of her life. In 1943 she handed the work over to the local doctor with the wish that he 'Keep this safe, it is my whole life.' By September she was transported to the Auschwitz gas chambers when five months pregnant. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

'Furari' could be translated as 'aimlessly,' 'at random,' or 'go with the flow.' But our stroller this time leaves nothing to chance. Six times Eisner Award nominee Jiro Taniguchi returns with this delightful and insightful tale of life in a Japan long forgotten. Inspired by an historical figure, Tadataka Ino (1745 - 1818), Taniguchi invites us to join this unnamed but appealing and picturesque figure as he strolls through the various districts of Edo, the ancient Tokyo, with its thousand little pleasures. Taniguchi slips easily into the heart and mind of this early cartographer and reveals his world to us in full graphic detail so we may fully perceive and understand. The Meiji era (1868-1912) was one of Japanese history's defining periods, a time of massive change from the more traditional Tokugawa era to a positioning of Japan in the modern world. Contemporary writer, Soseki Natsume, suffered due to all the social and cultural changes, and expressed his feelings through his character Botchan. Sekigawa explores the period through an adult point-of-view, and Taniguchi's art portrays the material with exquisite and elegant detail. Presented in traditional Japanese format reading. by Natsuo Sekigawa & Jiro Taniguchi The Meiji era (1868-1912) was probably the most defining period in Japanese history. It was a time of massive change from the more traditional Tokugawa era to a positioning of Japan in the modern world. Contemporary writer, Soseki Natsume, suffered due to all the social and cultural changes, and expressed his feelings through his character Botchan, a classic in the vein of Mark Twain and Charles Dickens. This massive work, which is over 10 volumes in length, could have been but an informed text book. However, the solid script by Sekigawa explores the period through an adult point-of-view, whilst the art by Taniguchi portrays the material with exquisite and elegant detail. An internationally renowned work finally available in English. Presented in traditional Japanese format reading right to left. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels
