A brilliantly original debut graphic novel that imagines a fantastical Cairo where wishes really do come true. Shubeik Lubeik - a fairy tale rhyme that means 'your wish is my command' in Arabic - is the story of three people who are navigating a world where wishes are literally for sale. Three wishes that are sold at an unassuming kiosk in Cairo link Aziza, Nour, and Shokry, changing their perspectives as well as their lives. Aziza learned early that life can be hard, but when she loses her husband and manages to procure a wish, she finds herself fighting bureaucracy and inequality for the right to have - and make - that wish. Nour is a privileged college student who secretly struggles with depression and must decide whether or not to use their wish to try to 'fix' this depression, and then figure out how to do it. And, finally, Shokry must grapple with his religious convictions as he decides how to help a friend who doesn't want to use their wish. Deena Mohamed brings to life a cast of characters whose struggles and triumphs are heartbreaking, inspiring, and deeply resonant. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

A gorgeous graphic memoir about loss, love, and confronting grief. When Kristen Radtke was in college, the sudden death of a beloved uncle and the sight of an abandoned mining town after his funeral marked the beginning moments of a lifelong fascination with ruins and with people and places left behind. Over time, this fascination deepened until it triggered a journey around the world in search of ruined places. She leads us through deserted cities in the American Midwest, an Icelandic town buried in volcanic ash, islands in the Philippines, New York City, and the delicate passageways of the human heart. Along the way, we learn about her family and a rare genetic heart disease that has been passed down through generations, and revisit tragic events in America's past. by Chris Ware F. C. Ware returns to the book trade with The ACME Novelty Library, a hardcover distillation of all his surviving one-page cartoon jokes with which he tuckpointed the holes of his regular comic book periodical over the past decade. This definitive congestion of stories of the future, the old west, and even of modern life nonetheless tries to stay interesting by including a luminescent map of the heavens, a chart of the general structure of the universe, assorted cut-out activitites, and a complete history of The ACME Novelty Company itself. (W/A) Charles Burns Winner of the Eisner, Harvey, and Ignatz Awards. Suburban Seattle, the mid-1970s. A strange plague has descended upon the area's teenagers, transmitted by sexual contact. The disease is manifested in any number of ways - from the hideously grotesque to the subtle (and concealable) - but once you've got it, that's it. What unfolds isn't the expected battle to fight the plague or even to treat it. Instead, we witness the nature of high school alienation itself. Black Hole deftly explorEs a specific American cultural moment in flux and the kids who are caught in it. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

A stunning graphic debut: the life of the legendary silent-film actor Lon Chaney (the original Phantom of the Opera and Hunchback of Notre Dame), as imagined by an artist whose work recalls the style and skill of early-era New Yorker cartoonists. From the artist: ''No one will ever love me!' I believe it was this near-universal fear that makes Lon Chaney's characters continue to resonate with us today. On their surface, most of them are distinctly unlikeable: they are monsters, outcasts, criminals. But through his unique magic, Chaney makes them empathetic. He pioneered the craft of makeup artist long before that term ever existed, and he used his expertise to hide himself from public view if nobody loved him?' PART OF THE PANTHEON GRAPHIC LIBRARY AN EXCITING NEW TALENT: Pat Dorian's work is instantly charming and accessible, and this is his first book-length publication. In 2016 he won the MoCCA Festival Award of Excellence for his first mini-comic on the life and work of Lon Chaney, which has now become this book. BASED ON TRUE EVENTS: While not a conventional biography, all the facts are there, and they are fascinating. For example: Chaney honed his craft of communicating silently with his face from the time he was a small child because both of his parents were deaf. FASCINATING CHARACTERS: The Hunchback of Notre Dame made Chaney a star, and The Phantom of the Opera made him a superstar. The scene where he is unmasked remains one of the most iconic in the history of cinema. (And yes, Chaney did the makeup himself.) THE MAN OF A THOUSAND FACES: Many believe that refusing to bare his face was a clever marketing ploy by Chaney to further entice his fans, but Dorian believes it was more likely an act of self-preservation. This is born out in Dorian's remarkable telling of Chaney's story. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Persepolis is Marjane Satrapi's wise, funny, and heartbreaking memoir of growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. In powerful black-and-white comic strip images, she tells the story of her life in Tehran from ages six to fourteen, years that saw the overthrow of the Shah's regime, the triumph of the Islamic Revolution, and the devastating effects of war with Iraq. Intensely personal, profoundly political, and wholly original, Persepolis is at once a story of growing up and a stunning reminder of the human cost of war and political repression. When she was a little girl, passing her summers in the heat of coastal Australia, Evie Wyld was captivated by sharks - by their innate ruthlessness, stealth, and immeasurable power - and they have never released their hold on her imagination. From the award-winning author of All the Birds, Singing, here is a deeply moving graphic memoir about family, love, loss, and the irresistible forces that, like sharks, course through life unseen, ready to emerge at any moment. Habibi is a deeply romantic story that explores and celebrates the beauty and cruelty, the complexity and depths of the Islamic world. Set in a mythical Middle East, at once contemporary and timeless, Habibi is a parable about our relationship to the natural world and the common heritage of Christianity and Islam. The magic of storytelling allows us to see the fragility embedded in cruelty, to understand how beauty can preserve us from destruction and how love can save us from loss of hope. Professor Paulie Panther - botanist, writer, and hopeless romantic - arrives in the experimental forest town of Boney Borough to research a strange plant growing behind the high school. Paulie soon discovers that the plant, when smoked, imparts telepathic powers. But when he shares this remarkable drug with his new friends, he finds that they're not interested in mind-expansion. Indeed, it appears that Paulie's brash individualism might not be welcome in a town that prefers conformity! (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

by Joann Sfar While the rabbit is away on an errand, the rabbi's cat tags along with Malke of the Lions, the rabbit's enigmatic cousin who roams the desert with his ferocious-on-demand lion. Some believe Malka to be a pious Jew, others think he's a shrewd womanizer, but the cat will be the one to discover the surprising truth. Back in Algiers, the rabbi's daughter, Zlabya, and her new husband fill the house with their fighting, while the city around them fills with a rising tide of anti-Semitism. On a whim, the rabbi's cat, the rabbi, the sheik (also a cousin of the rabbi), and a very misplaced Russian painter set out on a fantastic journey in search of an African Jerusalem. And it turns out to be fortuitous that the rabbi's cat is not just a talking cat, but a multilingual talking cat! (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

by David Heatley What if you wrote and drew a comic strip that honestly depicted every sexual experience you ever had, from 3rd grade to last week? It would force you to re-examine your life in ways that would make your shrink blush. In 2004, that's exactly what David Heatley did, and called it 'My Sexual History.' And what else to follow that up with than 'Black History,' which chronicles every African-American he ever encountered, whether it was Lennie from daycare or the artist's impression of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller.' So make no mistake - David Heatley is anything but withholding. Quite the opposite. But the great surprise is that he's not playing for shock effect, either. He's just trying to tell you what happened as succinctly and colorfully as he can. My Brain is Hanging Upside Down, its title taken from a Ramones lyric, marks the start of a brilliant cartooning career. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror
