D. Boyd takes an unflinching look back at a 1970s childhood plagued by insecurity, bullying, and family dysfunction. After starting a small town fried chicken franchise her war-vet father becomes even more emotionally inaccessible at home, and nothing Dawn does is ever good enough for her mother. School isn't much better being filled with constant social challenges. Dawn's a true underdog-and this is the story of how she learns to find the good in the bad, and that fitting in isn't all it's cracked up to be. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

by Kerry Byrne This graphic novel is a fascinating historical drama about a pioneering Russian immigrant in the 1920s. Lillian Alling gets off the boat at Ellis Island, then works as a seamstress in the factories of New York. Homesick and determined, she sets out on an epic journey to get back to Russia with nothing but an iron bar for protection. She walks the Telegraph Trail to Dawson City, Yukon, and eventually floats down the Yukon River to the Bering Sea where her fate becomes shrouded in mystery. Byrne's historical narrative in comics form renders Alling's journey with meticulous inks, from sweeping landscapes to the tiniest detail, without missing a beat. You'll laugh despite yourself at Howard Chackowicz's twisted, funny, yet surprisingly poignant cartoons. A mix of New Yorker gags gone awry, underground comix and nightmarish kids' books illustrations, Howie Action Comics represents many years of the artist's output. Often called a 'cartoonist's cartoonist' Chackowicz was nominated for a Harvey Award for his early work on Dennis Eichhorn's Real Stuff, and his painted comic mural art was officially selected for the Angoul (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Henriette Valium has been called the greatest French-Canadian cartoonist of all time. He's become a regular in almost every independent zine, compilation and catalogue in North America and Europe. Yet he has never had an original graphic novel published in English, until now! His style is like the bastard love child of S. Clay Wilson and Derf Backderf as raised by French avant-garde collective Le Dernier Cri. The Palace of Champions is a historical document, finally bringing to light this underground legend. It includes an introduction and interview to give context for Valium's long career and expansive body of work. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

In this debut graphic novel from Nova Scotian cartoonist Kyle Vingoe-Cram, a woman visits her estranged cousin in a town on the muddy banks of the Fundy coast, a magical place where they spent summers as children. Once tied at the hip, the two cousins, Andrea and Brendan, awkwardly reconnect over nostalgic hiking trips and retro video games. Meanwhile Brendan's husband Michael works on the premiere of a new play at the local theatre. As he struggles with the play, he must also care for his mother, the renowned playwright, who is suffering from early dementia. Pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling, Vingoe-Cram plays with the reliability of memory and the cascading effects of trauma through bursting geological panels and pools of negative space. Olive's post-secondary education isn't what they'd planned. Instead of college, they spend five days a week, eight hours a day at what Olive calls 'Food School': a full-time outpatient program for eating disorder recovery where they learn, talk, and cry about eating disorders as part of a survivor support group. Intensely committed to recovery, Olive confronts the secretive, self-destructive, and sometimes tragically comedic nature of their illness, while struggling with the complexities of modern mental health care. With support and perspective from their roommate, a fellow patient, and their partner, Olive learns to open up about their abusive relationship with food and exercise-and finds ways to cope with the reality of living in a society that actively encourages disordered eating. An adaptation of Franz Kafka's novel. Unlike the common cliché of Kafka's work, Amerika is not a dark and sinister novel, but a dynamic and colourful story, with a touch of absurdist humor. It tells the story of the young immigrant Karl Rossmann who, after an embarrassing sexual misadventure, finds himself 'packed off to America' by his parents. Expected to redeem himself in this magical land of opportunity, young Karl is swept up instead in a whirlwind of dizzying reversals, strange escapades, and picaresque adventures. Godbout's first work in English uses the clear line aesthetic he perfected in his series Red Ketchup. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

The comics community in Quebec has long been heralded as unique, blending the clear line aesthetic of Europe with the underground influences of North America. Think Tintin meets R. Crumb. Award-winning Canadian cartoonist Dakota McFadzean returns with a brilliantly dark collection that offers a glimpse into the cracks between childhood imagination and the disappointing harshness of adulthood. Populated by cruel bullies, exhausted parents, and relentless cartoon mascots, the world of To Know You're Alive renders the familiar into something that is alien and absurd. The characters in these stories long to uncover something uncanny in shadowy attics and beneath masks, only to discover that sometimes it's worse to find nothing at all. A morally ambiguous fable for the #MeToo movement. Drawn with guileful clarity and bite, The Unknown is a story of deceit, self-deception and the search for happiness. One day, Helen finds a newborn abandoned in a changing room in her boutique. She decides to keep it, nested in a cardboard box and hidden even from her husband. Vicky and Wanda are boarding school roommates. Wanda talks Vicky into turning tricks. Meanwhile, Vicky can't keep her secrets from Wanda - not her affair with their history teacher, and not the pregnancy she tries to sabotage and yet stubbornly carries out. As the two narratives converge, coincidences and secrets are revealed. Incisive, wicked and breezily unconcerned by taboos, Anna Sommer lets readers put together the pieces of her morally ambiguous fable. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

When COVID-19 hit Montreal, cartoonist Rick Trembles started The Weakly Dispatch, a series of diary comics offering his personal perspective on pandemic life. Trembles' asthma put him at risk of a serious infection so, like many others, he took careful measures to avoid coming into contact with the virus. He self-isolated for months, surviving on grocery deliveries from friends, DIY workouts (to prevent muscle atrophy), and of course, comics. Leaving the apartment, however, turned out to be even harder than staying isolated. Initially foiled by stair-painters and coughing neighbors, Trembles quickly discovered a newly perilous world, populated by unmasked people and handshake enthusiasts.
