We take a look back at Howard Chandler Christy, creator of the Christy Girl, and then at some German children's books about children behaving badly and how they inspired some popular comic strips and animated cartoons. His style is immediately recognizable, with a very clear line work and some interesting curly cues done in pen and ink. He wisely used an uncluttered art that, with the passage of time, became more and more limited to the essential. The care he applied to the environment and details of each panel he drew, especially in his way of presenting vehicles or his beloved aircraft, made him one of the top artists around the world. In fact, Tacconi would never hide his deep love for flying machines, which accompanied him throughout his career, both inside and outside the comic pages he drew. This is the very first time these stories have been reprinted since first appearing in 1960s. Regarded by comic aficionados as the finest western strip ever published, Wes Slade: Deputy US Marshal ran from 1961 until 1981. Written by James Edgar, perhaps the best writer of western strips, and drawn by George Stokes as a labor of love, the artwork is very special. Here we present 10 complete stories all scanned from the original artwork which still survives in the Express Newspaper Archives. George Stokes was born in 1934, the son of a British officer serving in the Indian Army. Travel in Canada and the USA deepened his interest in West and in 1960 he jumped at the opportunity to draw a newly created western strip for the Sunday Express, Wes Slade. He drew Wes Slade weekly for the next 20 years until his untimely death aged 47 in 1981.
