(W/A) Ron Embleton All of Ron Embleton's Wulf the Briton stories - collected from Express Weekly and the Annuals - in large format, gloriously reproduced in color to the highest standard. Wulf the Briton was, without a doubt, Ron Embleton's comics masterpiece after he took over the strip (in 1957) which had previously been a single page cover feature on Express Weekly. The workload that Embleton undertook with Wulf was formidable. In comparison to Frank Hampson, who had a studio and assistants to help meet the weekly Dan Dare deadlines, Embleton just had himself to draw, letter and paint the feature. However, Embleton was unfazed by such considerations and within a few months he was also writing the strip and steering it in a much more historically credible direction, as well as adding an extra page to the strip! In August 1914 much of Europe was pitched into a war which would eclipse all others in terms of its industrialised ferocity. In an era where photography and film recording were still in their infancy, much of the news was relayed through the work of reportage artists. Pre-eminent amongst such artists was Fortunino Matania who was The Sphere's artist-on-the-spot for events ranging from coronations to colliery disasters. Sent to a variety of fronts to cover the conflict, his illustrations created a gripping and, at times, life-affirming testimony to those traumatic times. For the first time ever, this book collects those images in large format so that they can be viewed as they were intended. OVER 150 paintings and drawings on the World War 1 conflict, depicting all its horrors and special moments. His work inspired many contemporary artists: Annigoni and Russell Flint both visited his studio, and many comic strip artists collected his work including Al Williamson, Roy Krenkel, Frank Frazetta, John Bolton, Bernie Wrightson as well as film directors such as Cecil B DeMille and Alfred Hitchcock. Quaco was just a boy when he was ruthlessly kidnapped by human traffickers around 1770 and sold to the captain of a slave ship. Quaco managed to survive the harrowing ocean crossing, and eventually landed in Paramaribo (Suriname) on the estate of the wealthy plantation owner and administrator Walter Kennedy. Quaco was one of the millions of Africans who fell victim to the trans-Atlantic slave trade. His life story is partly based on John Gabriel Stedman's illustrated memoires of his time as an army captain in Suriname.
