Frank Bellamy is an artist whose work reflects much of the century that he inhabited. Born a year before the end of the First World War, his art documented an age of conflict, exploration, technological advancement, social change and an age which could envisage worlds as yet undiscovered as well as worlds long departed deep beneath the sands of time. His story follows the course of many of his contemporaries, a driven determination to secure a living as a illustrator, bolstered by sporadic exposure to art tuition, stints in a provincial studio 'learning on the job', and the 'pilgrimage to London' and more specifically Fleet Street, which in the 1950s was a veritable Mecca for aspiring illustrators. What makes Bellamy's story so particular is his development into a pre-eminent graphic artist creating strips such as Robin Hood, King Arthur, Heros the Spartan, Fraser of Africa, Montgomery, The Happy Warrior, Thunderbirds and Garth. From a relatively staid and unremarkable (yet highly competent) artist to a ground-breaking master of the comic strip, his rise to fame presents not just a fascinating tale about his life and work but also the story of UK comics from what was a golden age through to the influencing of the next generation of comic artists-and creatives in other fields-who would succeed him. Typical of those who fell under Bellamy's spell is Oliver Frey who graces this edition with his introduction to the work of Frank Bellamy. (immagine) Categoria: Magazines

Billy Bunter had a long career at Fleetway. He began in hugely popular text stories and then went on to further fame as a purely slapstick character in the pages of Knockout and Valiant, where his depiction was almost totally unrelated to his original conception. The strips that appeared in Comet take us firmly back to the roots that established the popularity of the characters: exciting dramatic adventures featuring not only Billy Bunter but also the cast of other Greyfriars characters. This volume comprises the very best of the Comet Billy Bunter dramatic strips, including all those drawn by Reg Bunn ('The Famous Five') and C.H. Chapman ('Greyfriars School' and 'Bunter of Greyfriars') that most admirers would consider the pick of the crop, or as Billy Bunter might say, the icing on the cake… (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

In August 1914 much of Europe was pitched into a war which would eclipse all others in terms of its industrialised ferocity. In an era where photography and film recording were still in their infancy, much of the news was relayed through the work of reportage artists. Pre-eminent amongst such artists was Fortunino Matania who was The Sphere's artist-on-the-spot for events ranging from coronations to colliery disasters. Sent to a variety of fronts to cover the conflict, his illustrations created a gripping and, at times, life-affirming testimony to those traumatic times. For the first time ever, this book collects those images in large format so that they can be viewed as they were intended. OVER 150 paintings and drawings on the World War 1 conflict, depicting all its horrors and special moments. His work inspired many contemporary artists: Annigoni and Russell Flint both visited his studio, and many comic strip artists collected his work including Al Williamson, Roy Krenkel, Frank Frazetta, John Bolton, Bernie Wrightson as well as film directors such as Cecil B DeMille and Alfred Hitchcock. John M. Burns was one of Britain's, if not the world's, finest continuity artists. In a career spanning over 60 years, he produced vast amounts of work for numerous British weeklies including TV Express, The Hotspur, Boys' World, Diana, Wham!, Lady Penelope, TV Action, Look-in, 2000AD and Judge Dredd Megazine as well as working for publishers in Europe and the USA. Although always in demand, John found time between his numerous long term work commitments to help John Dakin in his quest to revive the British newspaper comic strip. Unfortunately this revitalisation never happened, but over a 15 year period, both Johns created characters, strips and full color pages that, until now have barely been seen by the public. Reproducing 40 color pages, including all 25 pages of their unfinished epic, A Surfeit of Assassins, numerous strips, sketches and roughs, this book truly reveals the unseen art of John M. Burns.
