(W) Peter Meriton (A) David Wright. In the early 1950s David Wright made an unusual career move for a successful commercial and pinup artist – he turned to comics. An early product of his new direction was the strip Judy, which he began in 1953 with John Hunter (writing as Peter Meriton) providing scripts. Judy is a standard adventure strip for the time – a young, beautiful girl is thrust into danger with her partner, Ricky, and their treasure-hunting adventures take them to exotic locales all over the world in a series of loosely-plotted melodramas. Judy is not quite Carol Day, due to weaker plots and cardboard characters, but maintains a strong appeal because of the art and its adventure premise, and it was a great vehicle for Wright’s beautiful cheesecake panels. In our view, it’s a minor gem by one of the greatest strip artists to practice the art and is well worth fans’ attention. Although originally printed in black and white, the source tearsheets are scanned and printed in full colour to help reflect the original artwork. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Synopsis James Fenimore Cooper's poignant tale superbly presented as a comic strip by the talented artists Cecil Doughty and Ruggero Giovannini. Set in 1757, when France and Great Britain battled for control of North America, it is the story of the two daughters of Colonel Munro, commander of a beleaguered fort. The girls, Cora and Alice, are rescued from an ambush by Hawkeye, a hunter, and his two Mohican companions, Chingachgook and his son, Uncas. The first adaptation in this book was drawn and painted by renowned Italian artist Ruggero Giovannini and appeared in Tell Me Why in 1968. The second version, from Look and Learn, was drawn in fine and authentic detail by Cecil Doughty and was originally published in 1980. Though taken from the same source material, both versions differ in more ways than just the look of their artwork. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Modesty Blaise, the tough and enigmatic character created by Peter O'Donnell, made her international debut on May 13, 1963 in a newspaper strip story illustrated by Jim Holdaway. On Jim Holdaway's sudden death in 1970 the artwork was taken up by Enric Badia Romero. In 1978 John Burns drew the strip for a year then Pat Wright for nine months. In May 1980 the fifth artist was introduced, Neville Colvin, who produced over 1500 strips. Colvin retired in 1986 and Romero continued again until the very last strip in 2001. This marvelous catalogue showcases over 160 original artworks reproduced here in the finest detail. Each individual scan of the original art shown in this book was carefully taken to optimise its reproduction on the printed page and to retain the look and feel of the artist's detailed pen (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

Bob Fingerman is an indie cartoonist who Harvey Kurtzman discovered amongst his students and realised here was someone who actually knew how to draw! Fingerman has worked for just-about every major and minor comics and magazine publication in the US, and while artists like Dan Clowes and Peter Bagge achieved greater visibility, Fingerman's work is of equal merit. Hans Kresse was one of the greatest comic strip artists you have never heard of, coming all the way from The Netherlands. It's a shame that nobody remembers him anymore. Although he was published all over the world-it was during the 1950s and 1960s-and that might be why nobody remembers him anymore, as comics once read back then were trashed afterwards and nobody gave a hoot as to who the artists were (although Kresse worked until the 1990s). A prolific artist, he even made it to British shores, so here we do justice to an artist who should be up there among giants. (immagine) Categoria: Magazines

(W/A) Ron Embleton All of Ron Embleton's Wulf the Briton stories - collected from Express Weekly and the Annuals - in large format, gloriously reproduced in color to the highest standard. Wulf the Briton was, without a doubt, Ron Embleton's comics masterpiece after he took over the strip (in 1957) which had previously been a single page cover feature on Express Weekly. The workload that Embleton undertook with Wulf was formidable. In comparison to Frank Hampson, who had a studio and assistants to help meet the weekly Dan Dare deadlines, Embleton just had himself to draw, letter and paint the feature. However, Embleton was unfazed by such considerations and within a few months he was also writing the strip and steering it in a much more historically credible direction, as well as adding an extra page to the strip! This Deluxe hardcover edition is numbered and limited to 400 copies worldwide. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels
