One of the most fondly remembered British strips was the fully painted The Rise and Fall of the Trigan Empire. With its pseudo retro setting in a world resembling Ancient Rome but with the advances of science in its weapons and flying vehicles, it set the standard in boys' comics from the 1960s. But it was mainly the absolutely stunning artwork of its initial artist, Don Lawrence, that made it a fan-favorite. We take a closer look at the artwork and feature panels in detail from the various artists who contributed to the series. The majority of the artwork was scanned from the originals and reproduced at their actual size to see the artwork in all its glorious detail. (immagine) Categoria: Magazines

In 1962 Frank Bellamy was asked to draw a new Roman epic strip for the Eagle, written by Tom Tully. At the pinnacle of his artistic skills, this new commission gave him a unique opportunity. The new strip Heros the Spartan was presented on the centre double page spread of the Eagle, enabling Bellamy to create the greatest comic strip adventure ever presented to the public. He excelled himself with revolutionary page and panel design and dramatic ink line work all in glorious color. Universally regarded as the greatest British comic strip ever produced, the art has never before been reprinted since its initial publication in 1962. Available in a limited edition and a special slipcased edition with 24 additional pages of artwork and text pieces by Dez Skinn and Dave Gibbons. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

This classic Moebius book now has extra content including 20 color pages never previously released. 'Everyone knows by now that Mars is sterile. Yet still we send at great cost robots equipped with small shovels that stubbornly dig remote arid soil in the hope of finding huddled fossils of ancient bacteria. I found it easier and less costly in terms of technology investment to get hold of a blank book and leave the pen running over the paper at random as if in a dream. Of course, this method of another age is far from providing the necessary scientific guarantees and I have not even tried to get a thesis in 'Science and Life.' Yet this book does exist and the strange creatures that inhabit its pages also exist with it and within it.' - Moebius (Contains French text in introductions and Moebius interview). (W) Peter Meriton (A) David Wright. In the early 1950s David Wright made an unusual career move for a successful commercial and pinup artist – he turned to comics. An early product of his new direction was the strip Judy, which he began in 1953 with John Hunter (writing as Peter Meriton) providing scripts. Judy is a standard adventure strip for the time – a young, beautiful girl is thrust into danger with her partner, Ricky, and their treasure-hunting adventures take them to exotic locales all over the world in a series of loosely-plotted melodramas. Judy is not quite Carol Day, due to weaker plots and cardboard characters, but maintains a strong appeal because of the art and its adventure premise, and it was a great vehicle for Wright’s beautiful cheesecake panels. In our view, it’s a minor gem by one of the greatest strip artists to practice the art and is well worth fans’ attention. Although originally printed in black and white, the source tearsheets are scanned and printed in full colour to help reflect the original artwork. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

All four of the stories in this collection were drawn by the great Ruggero Giovannini and were originally published in Thriller Picture Library issues 187, 270, 286 and 327 between 1957 and 1960. Today, Giovannini is mainly remembered in England for the many western, adventure and historical comic strips he drew in a realistic style, packed with plenty of action on each page. His style, inspired by Milton Caniff and Will 'Red Barry' Gould, has a way of telling a story which is fast-paced, occasionally using heavy shadows, and accompanied with his quickly rendered, yet effective, inking. Equally at ease in any time period, from Ancient Rome to the Wild West, we are pleased to bring Giovannini's dynamic artwork before a modern audience. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels
