In his Pacific Northwest studio during the isolation of COVID-19, Mark Ryden began a series of his iconic half-animal, half-plush creatures that further explored his reverence for these beings, who are guides through a landscape of the unknown. The figures in these paintings are neither human nor animal, they are spiritual entities that create a bridge between the human and animal worlds in which so much disharmony exists. This book features all of the original portraits of Ryden's mysterious and mythical creatures. The resulting gallery of enchanted characters embodies the artist's meticulously realized signature blend of archetype, kitsch, and narrative mysticism. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Through his highly subversive art Ron English (b. 1959) has bombed the global landscape with striking and often unsettling imagery. He coined the term' POPaganda' to describe his signature and darkly satirical renderings of corporate branding icons. His work is populated with a vast and constantly growing arsenal of original characters such as MC Supersized; the obese fast-food mascot featured in the movie Supersize Me; and Abraham Obama, which fused America's 16th and 44th Presidents. This book is the first complete retrospective of English's work, compiling his paintings, illustrations, toys, sculpture, street art, and 'agit-pop.' Additionally, it contains a lengthy and comprehensive interview with the artist conducted exclusively for this publication. Once celebrated by skilled painters and sculptors throughout the history of art, with the advent of the Industrial Age and assembly line production, scores of 'mams' merchandisers soon got in on the act. There was a time, however, when their low-budget portrayal in comic books, paperbacks, and pulps came under fervid assault, and effectively squelched, by the media censors. Headlight Honeys assembles dozens of rare, salacious cover examples and delivers the scoop on this harrowing, pre-code era in American publishing. Mark Ryden returns with 20 new incredible portraits of creatures From his Snow Yak to his very personal interpretation of the California bear, for more than 20 years Mark Ryden has populated an incredible 'pop surrealist' bestiary of half-animal, half-plush creatures. Freely inspired by the Rushton toys that enjoyed their heyday in America in the '60s and '70s, these creatures are now the object of a cult worship among fans of the artist, and are one of his marks of distinction in the world of contemporary art. This book reveals the details and backgrounds of the 20 new paintings Mark Ryden has created for his 2020's show at Emmanuel Perrotin's gallery in Shanghai, but also some of his most iconic master-pieces showcasing yaks and others creatures of his own mythology. With a statement essay from the artist and an introduction by Takashi Murakami ('the Warhol of Japan'), this 'little pink book' will become an instant classic for the lovers of contemporary art and surrealism. The official illustrated biogaphy revealing the life and work of Tim of Finland, the iconic artist who shaped the modern image of homosexuality. Tuoko Laaksonen, also known as Tom of Finland (1920-1991), was an iconic and provocative artist who rose to cult status in the international gay community and beyond for his work celebrating gay archetypes and masculinity during a time when being gay was taboo. Created in partnership with the Tom of Finland Estate, Tom of Finland: The Official Life and Work of a Gay Hero is a beautifully detailed visual biography full of never or rarely seen documents from his archive. The text was completed just a few months before the death of the artist and was fully approved by him-making this book the only 100% approved biography of this gay legend responsible for creating the muscled, mustachioed gay archetype of the 1960s and '70s. With an extensive biography, and suggestive photos and illustrations, Tom of Finland: The Official Life and Work of a Gay Hero brings to life the icon whose erotic illustrations of men influenced many artists, including Robert Mapplethorpe and Bruce Weber.
