Eleven-year-old Tony Weaver, Jr. loves comic books, anime, and video games, and idolizes the heroic, larger-than-life characters he finds there. But his classmates all think he's a weirdo. Ostracized and bullied by his peers, Tony struggles with the hurt and depression of not being accepted and hopes that if he can conform to other people's expectations, those feelings might dissipate. But, try as he might, he is unsuccessful and spirals deeper into the dark thoughts and feelings that plague him. Cut off from his peers and the media he loves, and unaware of how to broach the subject of his feelings and seek help, Tony attempts suicide. In the wake of his unsuccessful attempt, Tony's family surrounds him with love and support, and his life begins to change for the better. Tony starts seeing a therapist to talk through his feelings and enrolls in a new school whose aim is to foster creativity. As Tony navigates a new school, new friendships, and first crushes, he finds himself growing into the hero he's always aspired to be. Tony ultimately learns to love himself and discovers that the unique qualities that set him apart are, in fact, superpowers. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Val begins to reevaluate her life, her choices, and her own body. She realizes that the path to happiness might lead her away from her hometown and her mother's toxic projections. The words carved into the Statue of Liberty make a simple promise-America will provide a home for anyone in search of a better life. However, the true story of immigration to America is full of complications and caveats. Born in the USA tracks the history of immigration to the United States, revealing how economic interests and political winds have sculpted Americans' thoughts about who belongs in the USA. Turn back the clock with History Comics! In this volume, learn about two brave women who stood up against segregation, setting in motion the Montgomery Bus Boycott! A Black woman who refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus sparked a bus boycott and became part of one of the most iconic moments in American history. Yet, few know that Rosa Parks had actively worked toward social justice her whole life. And even fewer know that the seeds of the statewide bus boycott were first planted by a teenager named Claudette Colvin, who was arrested on similar charges months earlier. Parks and Colvin inspired a nation, showing how positive change can start with a single defiant act. Their actions have become the stuff of legend, but there is so much more to their lives, their stories, and the movement they began! (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

A middle grade graphic novel about Marlene, a young girl who stops straightening her hair and embraces her natural curls. Marlene loves three things: books, her cool TÃÂa Ruby, and hanging out with her best friend Camila. But according to her mother, Paola, the only thing she needs to focus on is school and 'growing up.' That means straightening her hair every weekend so she can have 'presentable,' 'good hair.' But Marlene hates being in the salon and doesn't understand why her curls are not considered pretty by those around her. With a few hiccups, a dash of embarrassment, and the much-needed help of Camila and Tia Ruby, she slowly starts a journey to learn to appreciate and proudly wear her curly hair. Inspired by the lives of the Grammy-nominated twin-sister duo, this concluding book in their bestselling middle-grade graphic novel duology is all about crushes, crushing it, and being crushed by life in junior high. Tegan and Sara may have survived seventh grade, but their junior high jams are just beginning. Offstage, school is officially back in session. Between Sara's growing feelings for her dream girl and Tegan's falling- out with her former BFF, eighth grade might prove to be even messier than last year. Onstage, the twins are swept up in a battle-of-the-bands contest to open for their favorite musical artist, landing them with a new manager, new opportunities, and new challenges, too. But stepping into the spotlight-and into their true selves-means colliding over fame, family, and finding their sound. In this spunky, bighearted conclusion to the autobiographically inspired duology launched in Junior High, the sisters realize that to get the gig that could change their lives forever, they'll have to first figure out who they are and how to get along.
