Cartoonist Gladys Parker was unique in comics. As with Frida Kahlo, it was impossible to tell where her art left off and its creator began. Parker mixed fashion and comics and created classic characters that mimicked her sense of fashion. In fact, Parker was an exact double for her ink-and-paper creation, Mopsy. Only Gladys Parker was a fashion designer with a successful line of clothing while at the same time drawing an equally successful comic strip. Parker's dresses bearing the Gladys Parker label were sold at her own New York shop and at high-end department stores across the country. Who better to chronicle the story of Gladys Parker than comics herstorian Trina Robbins, who in the 1960s designed clothes for hippies and rock stars out of her East Village boutique, while drawing underground comix? Hermes Press continues its long association with the original Gothic suspense television series "Dark Shadows" with the publication of the first-ever photographic art book devoted to the cult favorite which made sympathetic vampire Barnabas Collins a household name. Dark Shadows debuted June 27, 1966 on ABC-TV as the first daytime drama styled in the tradition of a Gothic novel. The show was the dream of producer Dan Curtis, who brought an exciting new format to the weekday schedule of standard fare soap operas. The pages in the volume feature images shot in black-and-white, spanning the series’ earliest days – before ghosts and vampires, when Dark Shadows most closely resembled a 1940s noir film – through its final episodes. As the series took a more fanciful direction, many of the plots retained an underlying tension and tone faithful to its origins, serving up a special hybrid... Dark Shadows NOIR. Featuring 256 pages, DARK SHADOWS NOIR features stunning full-page mono-chromatic images from the legendary television program, including dozens of previously unseen images from the archive of "Dark Shadows" creator Dan Curtis Productions. For 1,225 episodes, "Dark Shadows" thrilled over 20 million viewers during its five-year run with imaginative stories devoted to hidden mysteries, lost loves, time travel and supernatural characters. Late creator-executive producer Dan Curtis drew upon classic mystery, horror and romance tales ranging from "Jane Eyre" and "The Crucible" to "Wuthering Heights" to "Turn of the Screw" to enthrall captivated audiences. The ground-break sets, elaborate costumes and atmospheric lighting depicted on the series will be on stunning display in DARK SHADOWS NOIR with all images scanned in high resolution from original 35mm negatives and vintage fiber prints for rich CMYK reproduction of superior quality. DARK SHADOWS NOIR will serve as the ultimate souvenir for the 60th anniversary of "Dark Shadows" which continues to remain extremely popular via streaming services, televised reruns, DVD and BluRay releases, new merchandising and fan conventions. Referred to by comic strip historian Maurice Horn as the 'granddaddy of all costumed superheroes,' The Phantom was created in 1936 by Lee Falk with artwork by Sy Barry. The strip hit the funny pages of newspapers well before the Dark Knight or Superman made their first appearances and has been acknowledged as an influence on every 'masked man of mystery' since. The Phantom set the standard for action, adventure, intrigue, and romance in adventure comic strips and comic books - it has frequently been copied but never equaled. This exciting 21st volume continues the SY BARRY YEARS! Reprinted in all its black and white glory, journey with Hermes Press as we bring you five complete continuities drawn by Sy himself: 19 'Jungle Olympics, ''The Frame-Up,' 'The Hydra,' 'The Art Thieves,' 'The Masked Ball,' 'The Jungle Home,' 'Rex, the Missing Heir,' and 'The Gladiator.' Strips from this issue are taken directly from King Feature's proofs. Included in the volume is a comprehensive essay and documentary materials. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

This huge art book presents the complete original artwork, in an archival format, of all of Frank Thorne's signature creations: Ghita, in her first full length adventure. This definitive first volume is 15 x 22 inches and is being printing on special archival paper that simulates the original Bristol board used by Thorne in the creation of this popular culture masterpiece. In 1978, fresh off his run on Red Sonja, Frank Thorne went on to create the lusty warrior-goddess, Ghita. Imbued with the spirit of a mighty general, she would lead a rag-tag band against bloodthirsty armies, and along the way get in some tumbumping. This initial volume showcases some of Frank's earliest art of Ghita including her first appearance in the erotic epic 'Ghita of Alizarr,' early character designs, unproduced movie storyboards, the Wizard and Warrior Women portfolio, pin-ups and covers. This oversized edition, measuring 15' x 22', presents Frank's artwork full size, as originally drawn. The artwork has been scanned from the original pages in color to ensure the closest reproduction. Long ago in March of 2019, a gothic young woman had an idea. It was, perhaps, a lazy idea, but aren't all the best ones? After all, lazy is just another word for efficient. And thus, a comic idea was born: The Lazy Goth! The Lazy Goth explores the particular struggles of being an unmotivated goth in a world of motivated people. How To Alienate Friends & Avoid People is a graphic novel that not only depicts the struggles of being a square peg in a round hole, but celebrates it. Be it at home, work, on the internet, in relationships, or in her own feelings of self-worth and identity, The Lazy Goth discovers that no matter what, she is 'enough.' Walt Kelly's Peter Wheat comics are renowned for their humor, artistic flair and appeal to both children and adults. The Peter Wheat comic books are extremely rare and have never been collected as a series before, due to their scarcity and rarity. Between 1948 and 1951, Kelly drew thirty-five issues of The Adventures of Peter Wheat, a sixteen page comic book given away to bakeries to promote Peter Wheat bread. The stories were fairy tales starring Peter Wheat, an elf-sized boy who lived in a hollow tree on the edge of a wheat field where he and the Little Folk battle Dragonel, Queen of the Hornets. While created with kids in mind the mythology spun in these stories is timeless. “Coupled with Kelly's incredible artwork, this series of stories, which run in arcs, are indispensable in Walt Kelly's canon of work,” commented Dr. Thomas Andrae, editor of this series. Peter Wheat production history was written by Walt Kelly biographer Steve Thomson for this volume. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Before Fredric Wertham and The Seduction of the Innocent (SOTI), before before the infamous Comics Code, the comic book racks at local drug stores and newsstands boasted a plethora of delights highlighted by the good girl adventures of the comic book version of Brenda Starr. These four-color wonders displayed all the finer things loved by comic book buyers: good girls, bondage, a little torture, and other delectable things, which adults thought would corrupt the morals of young and impressionable readers. Now, for the first time in over 50-years, comics fans can read and own these rare comics from another era, digitally restored to perfection and presented in an archival hardcover. This volume presents the remaining four Brenda Starr Pre-Code books, issues #9-12, and the very mod and 1960's version of Brenda drawn and scripted by Dale Messick.
