Hungry bridge trolls, limousine werewolves, and other absurd characters populate these delightfully irreverent gag cartoons from the golden days of webcomics.Beginning at the dawn of the new millennium, the animator Brad Neely materialized as one of the funnier voices on the internet. Youtube hits like the foul-mouthed George Washington, his demented audiobook retelling of Harry Potter in Wizard People, Dear Readers, and the alarmingly prescient Adult Swim TV show China, IL (starring the voices of both Greta Gerwig and Hulk Hogan) all reveal how Neely captured a kind of freewheeling online spirit that is fading fast.During this ascent, Neely was also quietly mastering another form, the webcomic, where he spliced together historical figures, fairy tales, wildlife, and absurd gag setups into truly laugh-out-loud cartoons: hungry bridge trolls ready to devour local “chappies”; Caesar’s real killer (Jeffrey); the Boo-Boo Maker; limousine werewolves; superheroes trying and failing to rescue Christ; and more eye-blasting thrills.Gathered here for the first time along with Neely’s reflections about his work, Creased Comics is a portal into a truly individual creative mind, and a snapshot of some of the best days for webcomics.
Brad Neely is a writer and comic artist best known for his underground Harry Potter spoof, Wizard People, Dear Reader; his work on television series such as China, IL; and his webcomic series, Creased Comics. His first novel, You, Me, and Ulysses S. Grant, was published in 2024.

An advanced alien race attempts to escape oblivion with the help of a world-sized spaceship, an omniscient supercomputer, and a mysterious group of godlike creatures in this eye-popping illustrated sci-fi adventure. In the far reaches of the Andromeda Galaxy, a supernova obliterates the homeworld of the Zors, an advanced alien race. But the Zors knew this particular apocalypse was coming. To escape destruction, they built a world-sized spaceship run by an omniscient supercomputer. They search for a new home, but the odds are bleak. Aboard the ship, major unrest amongst the crew and passengers endangers the mission of survival.Outside in the cold of space, the enemies of the Zors gather to destroy them. Watching over the Zors are the Beings of Light, mysterious godlike creatures able to intervene in the affairs of others. But will they be able to save the Zors? The experiences of womanhood are heightened and transformed in these eerie, fairy tale–like comics by a gifted artist-writer duo.Soon after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the West German–born Katrin de Vries read a magazine featuring the drawings of the East German–born Anke Feuchtenberger. De Vries wrote to ask Feuchtenberger if she might want to collaborate, and together they’ve produced some of the most striking German comics of the last thirty years, most notably W the Whore. Collected here in English for the first time, W the Whore, W the Whore Makes Her Tracks, and W the Whore Throws the Glove present the shared vision of de Vries and Feuchtenberger at its most ambitious. The titular heroine, W the Whore, drawn in a shifting guise by Feuchtenberger, navigates the tedious rituals of womanhood, the unsettling mysteries of male desire, and the strangeness of motherhood, all while moving through a familiar but hostile everyday landscape of houses, factories, rail yards, and other ominous structures. An intimate and captivating work of comics, W the Whore is a testament to the challenges of existing in the bodies that we have been fated to inhabit, and what we do to persevere.
Anke Feuchtenberger is a German artist. She studied at the Kunsthochschule Berlin. Since 1997 she has held a professorship in drawing and graphic narration at the University of Applied Science in Hamburg. Feuchtenberger emerged as a comic artist and started exhibiting and publishing internationally in the 1990s. She lives in Hamburg and Vorpommern, Germany. Katrin de Vries is a German writer. She lives with her family in Bunde, Germany. Mark David Nevins is an occasional writer on and translator of comics. For more than two decades he has been the American Correspondent for the Swiss comics journal STRAPAZIN. His comics translations include Lone Racer, The Exlibris, Tango with Death, and The Man Who Didn’t Sweat. Professionally he advises CEOs and boards on leadership, strategy, and governance.Madeleine Schwartz is a journalist and editor based in Paris whose work has appeared in The New Yorker, The London Review of Books, and The New York Review of Books.

For readers of Thomas Pynchon, a conspiratorial adventure through a bleak future where the dead (and their political factions) never really die, from one of France’s most visionary writersBreton has seen brighter days. Now his body sags as he pulls a pair of binoculars to his withered face. He peers from the grimy window of a near-empty psychiatric compound—one of the last buildings standing after an unspecified disaster—spying rue Dellwo below, dreary in perpetual rain. Into this world of devastation drop the Monroe girls—paramilitaries trained in the “dark place” by Monroe, a dissident executed long ago. Their mission to revamp the Party is futile in this bleak, decaying world. Breton, our schizophrenic narrator, is tasked (and tortured) by what remains of the Party to locate and identify the Monroe girls using special optical equipment and his powers of extrasensory perception. Breton’s journey through a bardo-like, hostile labyrinth invites us into a sensual swirl of bodily decay, political acquiescence, and civilizational collapse. In this derelict setting, Volodine ruminates on identity, surveillance, life after death, and love (which, alas, does not conquer all). An urgent and blistering tale, beautifully rendered with Volodine’s distinct pathos and humor.
One of the most important figures in France’s contemporary literary landscape, Antoine Volodine writes under at least four heteronyms, including Lutz Bassmann and Manuela Draeger. He taught Russian in French secondary schools for many years before his debut novel, Comparative Biography of Jorian Murgrave, appeared in France in 1985. Most of his prolific output, including The Monroe Girls, take place in a post-apocalyptic world where members of the “post-exoticism” writing movement have been arrested for their subversive literary efforts.Alyson Waters is a prize-winning translator of French and francophone literary fiction, art history, philosophy, and children's books. She has translated works by Albert Cossery, Louis Aragon, René Belletto, Jean Giono, Eric Chevillard, Jean-Patrick Manchette, Emmanuel Bove, Claude Ponti, and many others. She has received a National Endowment for the Arts Translation Fellowship, a PEN Translation Fund grant, and was awarded the French-American Foundation Translation Prize twice. She taught literary translation at Yale for three decades and currently teaches at Columbia University. She lives in Brooklyn.

Hothead Paisan, a murderous icon of the '90s LGBTQ+ comics scene, comes roaring back into print in this fresh edition (including a new interview and supplemental materials) of one of the funniest, sharpest, and most unexpectedly warm comics of the late twentieth century, still as shocking today as it was more than two decades ago. Diane DiMassa's Hothead starts out in a murderous frenzy-taking out a variety of everyday chauvinists and creeps-but soon deepens into a reflection on oppression, self-destruction, and living it up outside the conservative norms of the '90s. Hothead's rage is sometimes tempered with the help of Thing #2, her defensive inner demon; Roz, her friend who offers Zen wisdom and tough love; and Chicken, her cat and constant companion. This collection includes a new interview with DiMassa along with a selection of fan mail and other materials that shed light on Hothead's vast underground following. At last, the most thoughtful homicidal maniac is back in print. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

The myth of Orpheus and Eurydice is retold with riotous ’60s flair in Dino Buzzati’s phantasmagorical graphic novel, a story with “shades of Fellini, shades of Dickens, [and] shades of the great Italian horror director Mario Bava” (Los Angeles Times). There’s a certain street—via Saterna—in the middle of Milan that just doesn’t show up on maps of the city. Orfi, a wildly successful young singer, lives there, and it’s there that one night he sees his gorgeous girlfriend Eura disappear, “like a spirit,” through a little door in the high wall that surrounds a mysterious mansion across the way. Where has Eura gone? Orfi will have to venture with his guitar across the borders of life and death to find out.Featuring the Ashen Princess, the Line Inspector, trainloads of Devils, Trudy, Valentina, and the Talking Jacket, Poem Strip—a pathbreaking graphic novel from the 1960s—is a dark and alluring investigation into mysteries of love, lust, sex, and death by Dino Buzzati, a master of the Italian avant-garde.

by (W) Kenji Miyazawa (A) Osamu Tsukasa (CT) Asa Yoneda; David Boyd
The most renowned work by the legendary Japanese writer who inspired Studio Ghibli, Night on the Galactic Railroad is a classic for readers of My Father's Dragon and A Wrinkle in Time. An adventure story steeped in profound themes. On the eve of the Milky Way festival, Giovanni rushes past his classmates who are busy preparing for the celebration. He must get to his job at the printing office where he plucks tiny pieces of type with tweezers from a box, in exchange for a single silver coin. Later, he waits in a dusky kitchen that smells of cows for a bottle of milk to bring to his mother. Night has fallen when his classmates begin sailing gourds lit with candles down the black, glistening river. Giovanni wanders along a hillside. The dark blue sky begins to twinkle and shine. And suddenly, Giovanni finds himself transported to a compartment of the Galactic train. Across from him is his fellow classmate, the tender-hearted, enigmatic Campanella. So begins an expedition traversing the galaxy. Campanella and Giovanni, etched in a black-and-white gothic style, travel through fields of purple flowers, into constellations. They meet the strangest people. There's the lighthouse man, the bird catcher, and the shipwrecked children. Kenji Miyazawa's story unravels its mysterious thread, in an exquisite translation by Asa Yoneda and David Boyd. Osamu Tsukasa's illustrations combine the enigmatic beauty of Edvard Munch and Aubrey Beardsley's art nouveau ink drawings––both of whom were inspired by Japanese woodblock prints. Miyazawa's classic story will stay with readers long after childhood.
Kenji Miyazawa was a poet and farmer born in Iwate Prefecture. He studied geology at Morioka Imperial College of Agriculture and Forestry, moved to Tokyo, and began writing poetry, short stories, and children’s books. He self-published his first book, a work for children, in 1924. Three of his books from the 1930s—Night on the Galactic Railroad, Matasaburo of the Wind, and Be not Defeated by the Rain—were published posthumously. Miyazawa’s fiction, poetry, and children’s stories sketch an ecological vision well ahead of its time. Drawing on his training as a scientist and a practitioner of Buddhism, Miyazawa developed a vision of interdependence among all forms of life at all times. His poetry and fiction for children and teens are popular in Japan today.Osamu Tsukasa was born in Maebashi, Japan in 1936. In 1964, he was a founding member of the Society for Independent Artists. His picture books include The Goose Child, Amenimomakezu, Machinto, The Old Woman’s Tale, and A Million Doves. Tsukasa has written several books of fiction, including On Shadows and The Bronze Mediterranean, as well as books on art and literature, such as The Magic of Books, The Magic of Picture Books, and War and Art. Tsukasa’s work has been shown in exhibitions including “The World of Osamu Tsukasa” at the Ikeda Museum of 20th Century Art and “Inside the Art of Osamu Tsukasa” at the Museum of Modern Art in Gunma. He has been awarded the Shogakukan Prize for Visual Arts, the Yasunari Kawabata Literary Prize, the Mainichi Prize for the Arts, and the Jiro Osaragi Prize.David Boyd is an Associate Professor of Japanese. by (W) Nicole Claveloux (CT) Donald Nicholson-Smith; Daniel Clowes
Now in paperback, a collection of “darkly humorous, existential, erotic, trance inducing” (The New York Times) short stories by the lauded French comics artist Nicole Claveloux.Nicole Claveloux’s short stories—originally published in the late 1970s and never before collected in English—are among the most beautiful comics ever drawn: whimsical, intoxicating, with the freshness and splendor of dreams. In hallucinatory color or elegant black-and-white, she brings us into lands that are strange but oddly recognizable, filled with murderous grandmothers and lonely city dwellers, bad-tempered vegetables and walls that are surprisingly easy to fall through. In the title story, written with Edith Zha, a new houseplant becomes the first step in an epic journey of self-discovery and a witty fable of modern romance—complete with talking shrubbery, a wised-up genie, and one very depressed bird. This selection, designed and introduced by Daniel Clowes, presents the full achievement of an unforgettable, unjustly neglected master of French comics.
Nicole Claveloux has contributed to the French comics magazines Métal Hurlant (Heavy Metal) and Ah! Nana, and drew a popular comic strip called Grabote. Championed by Harlin Quist, she has also illustrated a number of successful chil- dren’s books, including an award-winning version of Alice in Wonderland. New York Review Comics will be publishing a new collection of her work, Dead Season and Other Stories, in 2022.Daniel Clowes is a cartoonist, illustrator, and screenwriter. He lives in Oakland, California.Donald Nicholson-Smith has translated a number of books for both NYRB Classics and New York Review Comics, including Yvan Alagbé’s Yellow Negroes and Other Imaginary Creatures. A classic of Japanese manga, Miss Ruki is a warm and vivid portrait of the lives of two young women in Tokyo during Japan's 1980s bubble economy. The titular Miss Ruki spurns the fast-paced consumer culture of the era in favor of a lighthearted life dedicated to her hobbies, her books, and spending time with her anxious but far more pragmatic friend, Ecchan. Takano's art moves with all the warmth, grace, and clarity of the everyday moments it depicts. Sweet and funny, these vignettes of a long-gone time still resonate today with readers and authors in Japan, with famed contemporary manga artist Keigo Shinzo noting, 'To read it is to grasp something of the essence of Japan.... This is the kind of manga I want to draw.' (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

by (W) Blutch (CT) Matt Madden
A star of French comics imagines America--its movie stars, its history, its fashion--in these tantalizing graphic short stories about everything from love to, yes, the actor Robert Mitchum.Blutch is one of the most inventive storytellers in comics, and nothing reveals it like Mitchum. Serialized and collected in the mid-90s and never before available in English, this is Blutch at his most wide-ranging: from Puritan fever dreams to an encounter with a shape-shifting Robert Mitchum, Blutch builds stories out of his dreams, visions of America, and anything else he can get his hands on. Drawn in his unmistakable line that veers in a moment from crude to elegant, blotchy to crisp, horrific to serene, these comics show Blutch searching for new artistic frontiers. What he finds is sometimes surprising, occasionally unsettling, and endlessly fascinating.
Blutch (Christian Hincker) is an award-winning, highly influential French cartoonist. He has published almost two dozen books since his 1988 comic debut in the legendary avant-garde magazine Fluide Glacial, including Le Petit Christian, So Long, Silver Screen, and Peplum (available from NYR Comics). His illustrations appear in Les Inrockuptibles, Libération, and The New Yorker.Matt Madden is a translator and cartoonist. He is the author of 99 Ways to Tell a Story: Exercises in Style, which is a comics adaptation of Raymond Queneau's Exercises in Style, and of two textbooks co-written with his wife, Jessica Abel, Drawing Words & Writing Pictures and Mastering Comics. A surreal vision of a post-alien-invasion Earth where human beings still have to deal with quotidian frustrations, ennui, and understanding their place in the world.Since the mid-1980s, the British cartoonist Chris Reynolds has been assembling a world all his own. On the surface, it seems much like ours: a place of cool afternoon shadows and gently rolling hills, half-empty trains and sleepy downtown streets. But the closer you look, the weirder it gets. After losing a mysterious intergalactic war, Earth is no longer in humanity’s control. Blandly friendly aliens lurk on the margins and seem especially interested in the mining industry. The very rules of time and space seem to have shifted: Mysterious figures suddenly appear in childhood photos, family members disappear forever without warning, power outages abound, and certain people gain the power of flight. A helmeted man named Jimmy is somehow causing local businesses to shutter and is being closely watched by the “trendy new police force,” Rational Control. The world is being remade, but in what image? This new collection, selected and designed by the acclaimed cartoonist Seth, includes short stories, a novella, and the full-length graphic novel Mauretania. It is the ideal guide to all the mystery and wonder of one of the most underappreciated cult classics in the history of comics. This NYRC edition is a hardcover with foil stamping, debossing, full-color endpapers, and extra-thick paper, and features new scans of the original artwork.

"When wider American audiences meet Mafalda, they’ll find a girl who resembles Nancy, but whose antics are entirely her own." —The New York Times Book Two of the celebrated comic finds Mafalda surfing waves, mediating between frenemies, and schooling teachers—for kids 8 and up, plus Calvin and Hobbes and Peanuts lovers of all ages.As good a place as any to enter the madcap world of Mafalda and friends, Book Two of Mafalda finds the gang up to new antics. Mafalda heads off on a beach vacation, where she meets a curious stranger: Miguelito, a mop-headed philosopher who happens to live right down the street back at home. Susanita, Manolito, and Felipe, meanwhile, continue to tussle over all manner of issues, romp around the neighborhood, and execute physical feats of great proportions (with the help of a bicycle and a space helmet, Felipe inaugurates the Argentinean Space Program). Only this time, Quino brings everyone together in an alien environment: elementary school.Following the heels of a beloved Book One, Mafalda is back again with her precocious political incisiveness, gags, and hijinks. Mafalda notes the peculiar effects of consumerism and globalization, the ironies of sexism, and the injustices of poverty. Her clear-sighted antiwar beliefs will inspire a new generation of thinkers and activists. All the while readers (young and old) will fall in love with Quino's drawings which evoke the humor, irritation, ponderousness, and energy of childhood.
Quino (Joaquín Salvador Lavado Tejón) was an Argentine cartoonist whose beloved Mafalda comic strips were first published in 1964 and ran until 1973. Quino created the utterly original, inquisitive, intelligent, ironic, non-conformist Mafalda, whose greatest concerns are peace and human rights (one day, she plans to be a UN ambassador). The stories of his rebellious character have been translated into twenty-six languages and published in newspapers and magazines worldwide. Quino’s awards include the Cartoonist of the Year Award at the International Salon of Montreal (1982), two Konex Platinum Awards for Visual Arts-Graphic Humour (1982 and 1992), the Quevedos Latin American Prize for Graphic Humour (2000), and the Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities (2014). by (W) Yoshiharu Tsuge (CT) Ryan Holmberg
A Japanese manga legend's autobiographical graphic novel about a struggling artist and the first full-length work by the great Yoshiharu Tsuge available in the English language.Yoshiharu Tsuge is one of comics' most celebrated and influential artists, but his work has been almost entirely unavailable to English-speaking audiences. The Man Without Talent, his first book ever to be translated into English, is an unforgiving self-portrait of frustration. Swearing off cartooning as a profession, Tsuge takes on a series of unconventional jobs -- used camera salesman, ferryman, and stone collector -- hoping to find success among the hucksters, speculators, and deadbeats he does business with.Instead, he fails again and again, unable to provide for his family, earning only their contempt and his own. The result is a dryly funny look at the pitfalls of the creative life, and an off-kilter portrait of modern Japan. Accompanied by an essay from translator Ryan Holmberg that discusses Tsuge's importance in comics and Japanese literature, The Man Without Talent is one of the great works of comics literature.
Yoshiharu Tsuge is a cartoonist and essayist known best for his surrealistic, avant-garde work. Tsuge began drawing comics in 1955, working primarily in the rental comics industry that was popular in impoverished post-war Japan. In the 1960s, Tsuge was discovered by the publishers of the avante garde comics magazine Garo and he gained increasing recognition for his surrealistic and introspective work. He withdrew from Garo in the 1970s and his work became more autobiographical. Tsuge has not published cartoons since the late 1980s, elevating him to cult status in Japan. He lives in Tokyo. Ryan Holmberg is an arts and comics historian. Dreamlike and darkly humorous stories of migrant labor and the gig economy for fans of Black Mirror and The Twilight Zone.In a delicate, sometimes searing send-up of documentary cartooning, Delphine Panique stitches together vignettes of an eerie dreamworld, not dissimilar from our own, and its most marginalized workers: single migrant mothers. A seasonal worker trains messenger pigeons, necessary in a country that can’t give up instant communication after the disappearance of electricity; a woman who never wanted to be a mother is tricked into caring for a house full of strange children in a coastal town whose rising waters its wealthy residents are fleeing; a fleet of couriers circulate among people who live completely indoor lives supported by deliveries until, one day, the packages seem different…Vibrant, smart, and masterfully spun, Dig and Drift at once summons humor, tragedy, and ironic, steely optimism. The indomitable spirit of working women reverberates throughout the book, translated into English for the first time by translator Devorah Fischler.
Delphine Panique is a French comics artist. She has authored several graphic novels, of which Dig and Drift is the first to appear in English.Devorah Fischler is a writer, editor, and translator based in San Francisco.
