by Brian Chippendale Drawn in 1996 over the pages of a Japanese book catalog, this 350-page graphic novel is now reproduced in a facsimile edition. The story concerns a group of characters living in a place called Fort Thunder, wandering around and discovering little holes in their universe. They battle a capitalist landlord, eat peanut butter sandwiches, and embark on adventures somewhere between dirt punk and epic cosmic science fiction. Maggots opens up into beautiful visual passages, vistas of temples and flowers, all drawn in scorching black marks that tell a story in their own abstractions. by Gary Panter Legendary underground cartoonist Gary Panter's comics are typically anarchic and fun, but they also delve deeper. Jimbo, Panter's enduring punk everyman, shares billing with a cast of idiosyncratic characters including Bob War (his calamitous brother), Uncle Garcia (a smart-talking dinosaur and beleaguered guardian in a bathrobe), and Kokomo, a native in an unspecified tropical land colonized by oil companies. Panter's farce follows Jimbo's misadventures as he tries to get a Moka Cola at the local Jack-in-the-McTacos. The whole zany affair culminates in an absurd, scatological climax at an automated fast food restaurant. This delightfully inane story offers a selection of Panter's themes: humanity's troubled relationship with nature and technology; the tension between restraint and the uncontrollable urge; family relationships; and Jimbo's endearing, comical self-doubt. by Yuichi Yokoyama In two-time Eisner Award nominee Yuichi Yokoyama's Travel, the storyline is as linear as it is sharp; it is the long, silent and crystalline description of a train ride undertaken by three men. The subject Yokoyama depicts here is less the landscape around the train (the distances covered, the regions traveled through) than the actions within the train itself. As the train moves, the three men walk through the string of cars and are confronted with the vehicle's architecture... its machine-like environment. But above all, they are confronted with the stares and the physical presence of other passengers. Travel is a journey into the contemporary Japanese psyche - a brilliant, wordless graphic novel. (W/A) Renee French In H Day, Renee French explores, through metaphor and in pictures, her struggles with migraine headaches, marshaling troops of insects, beasts and humanoids to envision the processes that result in such hideous sensations. A sweeping, often tense narrative of invasion, repulsion and liberation, H Day can be read both as an oblique autobiography and as a suspenseful fantasy story. Frank Santoro's graphic novel takes place just before the eruption of Pompeii in the year 79 CE. Marcus, a young expat artist from Paestum, works as an assistant in Pompeii to Flavius, a seemingly well-regarded painter. Aside from mixing paint, Marcus is entangled in the older artist's romantic deceptions, while stuck figuring out his own. Santoro has constructed a historical fiction that is rooted in emotional truths and structured around classical principles of composition. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

by Norman Hathaway Overspray is the comprehensive account of an exuberant form of art in the 1970s and the culture that made it famous - airbrushing. Inspired equally by surf graphics and psychedelia, a generation of young artists embraced the optimism of the Los Angeles art scene and combined it with the slick, manicured surfaces of Hollywood. Suddenly, every record cover looked shiny, every pair of lips was high gloss, every palm tree glistened, and clothes were as loud as the sun. The word was awash in perfectly smooth, vibrantly colored forms. Overspray tells these artists' stories for the first time, reproducing hundreds of images of the best airbrushed work, unseen production art, and ephemera. Overspray will bring that era to vivid, glossy life. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

Originally published in 1948, The Mysterious Underground Men tells the story of Mimio the talking rabbit as he struggles to prove his humanity while helping his friends save earth from an invasion of angry humanoid termites. Inspired by Bernhard Kellermann's Der Tunnel (1913), Buster Crabbe's Flash Gordon, and various American comics including Milt Gross' He Done Her Wrong (1930), The Mysterious Underground Men also provides a rare glimpse into the diverse Western sources of young Tezuka's imagination. Printed in the manga's original color and size, this is the first English translation of the book. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

by Gary Panter Gary Panter has been one of the most influential figures in visual culture for over 30 years. From his exuberant paintings to his cartoon icon Jimbo, and the Emmy-award winning design of Pee-Wee's Playhouse, he has left his mark on every medium he's touched. This definitive edition of his work is split into two full-color volumes. The first volume is a comprehensive monograph featuring over 1,000 images of paintings, sculptures, posters, comics, and drawings complemented by essays from Byron Coley, Richard Klein, Robert Storr, and more, as well as the longest interview to date with Panter. The second volume is a selection from Panter's sketchbooks, where the artist's ideas have long incubated and the site of some of his finest work. Very little of the work contained in these volumes has been published in any form. Slipcased. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Beloved for his graffiti-inflected science fiction comics, Brandon Graham has developed a punning, humorous and sexy universe of machines, logos, women, and bumbling men, all cast in an alternate Sci-Fi universe. Walrus, Graham's first art book, collects drawings and sketchbook comics spanning 2009-2012, and allows readers a glimpse into his creative process and obsessions. Here we glimpse everything from the puttering pace of domestic life to high energy drawing riffs to homages to cult comic book characters. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

(A) Yuichi Yokoyama This is the first book of color paintings and comics by the Eisner-nominated manga artist Yuichi Yokoyama. This book seamlessly integrates his lush painted canvases (often presented as foldout pages) with a sequence of comic strips in a variety of techniques: photography, loose marker drawings, hyper real portraiture, and much more. Through it all he continues his investigations into the world of machines, architecture and post-human fashion. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

What are the movies? What effect do they have on us? Why do we love them so much? Blutch addresses all these questions in a series of interlocking short comics that move between scholarly history, romantic theory and ribald vignettes, featuring a motley cast of actors and topics including Burt Lancaster, Jean-Luc Godard, Luchino Visconti, Claudia Cardinale, Tarzan, and Michel Piccoli. Sammy Harkham is regarded as one of the most influential cartoonist/editor of his generation. After a decade of work and groundbreaking anthologies, Everything Together collects his short stories. These comics condense vast amounts of emotion and information into nuanced cartoon narratives. At the center of the book are two vastly different tales: 'Poor Sailor', a sea-faring myth of a man gone to find wealth for his love; and 'Somersaulting', a fever dream of teenagers in love, wiling away the summer. Through all these works, Harkham maintains a light touch and emotive wit. The works in this book confirm his place among the best storytellers of his generation. In 2012, Providence-based artist and musician C.F. began to produce a series of more than a dozen mini-comics, which he distributed via Twitter. Each mini-comic offered a take on, and expansion upon, a classic comic strip genre-from crime and sci-fi to punk and sex-all of them infused throughout by C.F.'s absurdist humor and loose improvisatory drawing. Less than 50 copies of each mini-comic were printed; needless to say, they sold out instantly. Collected here for the first time, they constitute a kind of bravura display of C.F.'s dexterity with pen and ink. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels
