His fluid figures were admired and copied by such greats as Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. In the early 40's, the heyday of the Golden Age, he worked for Everett M. "Busy" Arnold at Quality Comics along with such greats as Reed Crandall, Jack Cole and Will Eisner and in addition to his impressive covers, he worked on such comics as the Black Condor; aka Richard Grey Jr. having lost his parents was raised by giant black condors and after studying his condor foster parents, he learned to fly. He befriended a hermit monk named Father Pierre who convinced him that he should use his unique attributes to do good and so was born the Black Condor.Lou Fine also created The Ray, a reporter named Hubert 'Happy' Terrill who was covering the story of a high-flying "strato-balloon" exploring the upper atmosphere. First introduced as ‘Dan Brand and Tipi’ in Magazine Enterprises ‘Charles Starret as the Durango Kid’ issue #1 from October/November 1949 – the White Indian was created by Frank Frazetta and Ray Krank.Dan Brand was the colonial ancestor of the Durango Kid. On his wedding day to Lucy Wharton, Lucy’s ex-boyfriend, Peter Bradford tried to shoot Brand. The bullet missed him and killed Lucy instead. After her funeral Dan left Philadelphia to the West – to hunt down Bradford! He was attacked by a bear, which he killed with his knife but was badly wounded. Luckily, the chief of the Catawbas, Great Eagle and Tipi, his young son found Dan and helped him recover. They invited him to stay with them, which he did for a year – until Bradford reappeared, now selling rum and weapons to the Catawbas’ rival tribes. Bradford killed Great Eagle and fought with Dan – who was now known as the White Indian, where Bradford plummeted off a cliff to his death! (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Princess Pantha was a circus-performing wild animal handler who went to Africa in search of the legendary giant gorilla M'Gana for her act! She disappeared shortly after setting out-so Gilt-edge Gates, the owner of The National Circus hired Dane Hunter, a famous explorer to find her. After discovering her safari had been wiped out by an unknown hostile native tribe and she'd saved herself by using her ability to make an extra-loud gorilla call, which the natives mistook for the approach of M'Gana and fled. Princess Pantha had survived in the jungle for two months now, utilizing her animal skills, knowledge of jiu-jitsu and a few primitive weapons. Together Pantha and Dane remained in the jungle and continued their quest to capture the legendary giant gorilla M'Gana! Comic book stories from the 1940s and 1950s depicted some ethnic and racial prejudices that were once commonplace in American culture. While not representing the publisher's view of today's society, these stories are printed as they were originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Collects Princess Pantha from Thrilling Comics #56-75 (October 1946-October 1949). (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Dick Briefer's Frankenstein for Prize Comics is widely regarded as being America's first ongoing horror series. Indeed, it was Briefer's work that probably caused the creature to be actually named as Frankenstein instead of the nameless monstrosity from Shelley's novel. Splitting the stories between the twin stools of humor and horrorm Briefer's tales are absorbing and unsettling in equal parts. Some of the humorous material has already been reprinted, though not necessarily in order nor in total. Until now, of course! Reprints Prize Comics stories issues #7-37 (December 1940-December 1943).
