Writers' and Artists' Names: Artists include Everett Raymond Kinstler, Joe Kubert, Alex Toth, Murphy Anderson,. Gene Colan, Bernie Krigstein, Matt Baker, George Tuska and Bob Powell Synopsis: ST. JOHN - ISSUE 3 October 1953 ISSUES 10 - 13 December 1953 to August 1954 Special Notes: St. John was a mid-sized comics publisher with a varied list of titles, and in June 1952 they joined the horror binge with two titles, Strange Terrors and Weird Horrors. Strange Terrors ended after seven issues, to be replaced by Nightmare #3, picking up from the Ziff-Davis series. However -- and I can't explain this, only report it -- they then combined the title Nightmare with the numbering from Weird Horrors, so that Weird Horrors #9 and Nightmare #3 were followed by Nightmare #10. And after Nightmare #13 the title was changed to Amazing Ghost Stories for its final three issues. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Synopsis: Lev Gleason - DAREDEVIL COMICS VOL 1 - Silver Streak Comics #6 - #17 September 1940 - December 1941 and Daredevil [Battles Hitler] Comics #1 July 1941 Special Notes: Variant Covers If collated need the ratio, /Free or ordering Criteria Daredevil is a fictional superhero created by Jack Binder. In the character's first appearance, his origin was said to have been told to the artist of the story by someone named 'Captain Cook...' The story was that, as a child, Bart Hill was witness to his parents' brutal murder. The murderer also branded Bart with a hot iron, leaving a boomerang-shaped scar on the left side of his chest. This traumatic experience left the boy mute. He trained his entire life in the art of the boomerang, eventually becoming a master boomerang marksman. He then donned a costume and took to the streets as the vigilante crime-fighter known as Daredevil. However... It appears Captain Cook lied, for Bart Hill/Daredevil's second appearance showed him able to speak and it was later revealed that his parents were killed while in Australia, with Bart then raised by a tribe of aborigines who taught him the art of using boomerangs. As an adult, he returned to the U.S. and fought crime as Daredevil. Lev Gleason launched Daredevil's own comic with Daredevil Battles Hitler #1 (July 1941), in which Daredevil and other Silver Streak heroes fought the German chancellor. It was written and partially drawn by Charles Biro, who in his 16-year run would make the character one of the most acclaimed of the Golden Age. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

GOLDEN AGE CLASSICS THE SPIRIT TP SOFTEE VOLUME 5 Quality Comics was an American comic book publishing company that operated from 1937 to 1956 and was largely influential in creating the 'Golden Age' of comic books. From 1940–1950, printer Everett M. "Busy" Arnold reprinted Spirit stories under his Quality Comics banner, first individually from 1940–1947 as one of the features in 92 issues of Police Comics and from 1944–1950 as 22 issues of The Spirit. The Spirit is a fictional masked crime fighter created by cartoonist Will Eisner, who fights crime with the blessing of the city's police commissioner Dolan, an old friend. Despite the Spirit's origin as detective/criminologist Denny Colt, his real identity was rarely referred to after his first appearance, and for all intents and purposes he was simply "The Spirit". The stories are presented in a wide variety of styles, from straight forward crime drama and noir to lighthearted adventure, from mystery and horror to comedy and love stories, often with hybrid elements that twisted genre and reader expectations. Comic book stories from the 1940s and 1950s may depict some ethnic and racial prejudices that were oncecommon place in American culture. Such depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. While not representing the publisher's view of today's society, these stories are printed as they were originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. More horror and suspense for Classic Horror Comics Volume 8! Starting with this little gem-Front Page Comic Book is a Pre-Code anthology from Harvey that contains the origin and first appearance of the Man in Black. This was the only issue of the series. Prize Mystery added a cash incentive for the lucky 1950s reader if they could solve a two-page mystery involving murder. Ironically, solutions to the prize mysteries were to be announced in the issue #4… but, alas it never happened. Man in Black, the faceless occult avenger, tells strange stories, sometimes intervening in person, other times merely letting ironic fate unfold. Reproduced completely from cover to cover as they should be, just like the original comic! Collects Front Page Comic Book #1 (1945), Prize Mystery #1-3 (May-September 1955), and Man in Black #1 (September 1957). (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

This 'picture novel' has been called comics' first graphic novel. This also has the distinction of being the first comic book work by writer Arnold Drake of Deadman fame. The story is very much in the pot-boiler/noir genre featuring Hal Weber, onetime crusading journalist, who is summoned to Copper City by his old flame Rust after the death of her husband, mining magnate and political heavyweight Arthur 'Buck' Masson. As editor of The Express, a newspaper with an anti-Masson stance secretly owned by Rust, Hal is drawn back to her even as he falls for her stepdaughter Audrey. Collects It Rhymes With Lust (1950). PS ARTBOOKS PRESENTS CLASSIC SCI FI GALE ALLEN & FUTURA TP SOFTEE VOLUME 11GALE ALLEN – PLANET COMICS #4 - #25 April 1940 – July 1943?FUTURA – PLANET COMICS #43 - #48 July 1946 – May 1947 Gale Allen was a Venusian princess, the direct descendant of King Rogert who was the first human to land on Venus. Gale went on to become an agent of the Universal Space Patrol, and traveled throughout the galaxy fighting injustice. She held the rank of captain and she commanded a team called the Girl Squadron (or more formally, The 40th Women's Space Battalion), entirely comprised of female pilots and soldiers. Gale's headquarters was in Vanam, the canalled capital of Venus. Allen's primary nemesis in her early career was Prince Blaga Daru, a tyrant who nearly conquered the Earth and wanted Gale for his mate. Marcia Reynolds was a second-grade technical secretary, with only a norm-plus rating on the intelligence quota, energo-efficiency and mating potential. In other words, she was a very average human girl. That was, until she was abducted by the Brain-Lords of Cymradia, and became Specimen Nine of Project: Survival, the Cymradians determined that she had great potential, describing her as a "prize of prizes" and giving her the lab name, Futura. She proved to be a courageous fighter, successfully managing to rally the other test subjects against the Cymradians, and escaped, as much of the planet of Cymradia was buried in hot magma from a geyser. After her escape from Cymradia, Futura fell into trouble with a number of space pirates, including Yrina and Omma, and Captain Blargo, the Lawless. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

PRE CODE CLASSICS MYSTERIES WEIRD & STRANGE TP SOFTEE VOLUME 1 This one’s a wacky entry and no denying, with Canadian publisher Superior Comics coming into the the? four-colour horror ring all gloved up and swinging fit to punch the lights out of anybody who stands in their way. They kicked off with JOURNEY INTO FEAR, STRANGE MYSTERIES (as opposed to pretty? straightforward and perhaps even slightly boring mysteries) and the one-word extravaganza that was? MYSTERIES, the latter calling itself variously MYSTERIES (its legal title) and, on the cover,? MYSTERIES WEIRD AND STRANGE. The earlier tales were bizarre and quirky and it’s pretty clear that? inspiration was in short supply that day. Good stuff though, Clancy, with pens, pencils and plots coming? from, among others, Jay Disbrow and the Igor Shop: clear a space on the shelf pronto.? (immagine)
