Meet the Parents meets Wednesday in this queer, tongue-in cheek YA graphic novel about every young couple's worst nightmare: meeting the family.Sam and Boots are relationship goals: stupidly cute, super supportive, and so in love. Of course, the natural next step is for Sam to join Boots for a weekend back home. So what if Boots says her family is a little weird and that they’d never expect her to bring a girlfriend home? Sam is sure she’ll win them over. Besides, meeting the parents is a big deal, but it’s not life or death, right?Wrong! Because it turns out the Blackwoods aren’t just weird, they’re monsters—literally. Soon enough, Sam isn’t just dealing with the realization that her girlfriend is a vampire but also dodging a myriad of family members who can’t help but try to curse, hunt, drown, or eat her. And while Boots grapples with her own monstrous tendencies, Sam struggles to be supportive...while also staying alive. This not-so-perfect-after all couple will have to fight tooth and claw if they want to escape the weekend with their relationship and their humanity intact.

The girls of PAWS have a bone to pick with a group of rival dog walkers in the fifth book of this heartwarming and hilarious graphic novel series that is the Baby-Sitters Club for pets! It's been seven whole dog years of PAWS (or just one if you're a human), and business is at an all-time high! But after a regrettable run-in with Gabby's arch-nemesis, Leo, things take an unfortunate turn. The two have an argument and Leo leaves the girls with an ominous message: "You're not the only one who can walk dogs..." It's not long before the girls notice flyers advertising a new dog walking business, SCAMPS. Sure enough, Leo and friends Brandon and Nolawi are behind it. And when Gabby and Mindy take some not-so-righteous retribution on these PAWS copycats, what could just be a little healthy competition turns into an all-out turf war.In the midst of it all, Mindy gets stuck doing a group project with Brandon, bringing her face to face with the enemy. But is it possible they have more in common than not? As the battle between the two groups escalates, and neither side is playing fair, the girls are forced to reconsider who the true villain of this story might really be.

In this extraordinary graphic memoir companion to Newbery Honor winner Mexikid, hilarious family hijinks, immigration patrols, and musical daydreams shape a year of growth and change for a Mexican American boy and his family.Pedro Martín is sick of strawberries. Since he was seven, he’s spent every weekend and summer picking berries with his family under the hot sun. Sometimes it’s not so bad—Pedro’s an ace at “strawberry wars” with his siblings, and when a good song comes on the radio, the fields can come alive with music. But mostly, Pedro wishes he could just stay home watching Saturday cartoons, head to the beach like other kids, and not worry about immigration patrols. When his older brother gets a job away from the farm, freedom suddenly seems within arm’s reach: Pedro just has to prove to his dad that he’s ready to follow a different path! Maybe he can be a trombone player, or a cartoonist—if that’s even a real job. But as Pedro learns more about his parents’ and abuelito’s past, and the choices they made in order to open up more choices for him, he starts to understand that freedom isn’t just about leaving the fields—it’s about knowing where you came from and having the courage to draw your own life.
Pedro Martín is the Newbery Honor Award, Pura Belpre Author and Illustrator award-winning creator of the graphic memoir Mexikid, based off his online comic series of the same name. Mexikid has landed on many end of the year best-of lists, including The New York Times Book Review, NPR, Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly, School Library Journal, and Booklist. Pedro is a former Hallmark artist who lives with his wife in Kansas City.

by (W) Kim Hyun Sook; Ryan Estrada (A) Ryan Estrada
Acclaimed creators Kim Hyun Sook and Ryan Estrada are back with a lightly creepy yet hilarious young adult graphic novel about first love and friendship—sure to offer both tricks and treats. It's almost Daeboreum in 1980s South Korea—a holiday that celebrates the first full moon of the year. Taehee couldn't care less. All she wants is to spend time with her boyfriend Kiwoo, avoid her controlling father, and play music for her mask dance club. But Taehee's weird granny and her even weirder friends have other plans for Taehee: they drag her, Kiwoo, and the rest of the dance club to their remote farm to celebrate Daeboreum...the old-fashioned way.As the group arrives at the farm, Taehee overhears her granny talking about ceremonies, ghosts, and possibly (probably) sacrificing her friends to evil spirits. And if that's not bad enough, Taehee just said those Three Little Words to Kiwoo that he can't seem to say back. Meanwhile, her friends are running wild with secrets—ones they definitely don't want the grannies to overhear. It seems like everyone is up to no good. The first full moon of the year is about to arrive, and with it confessions that threaten to change everything. That is, of course, if they all make it out alive. Featuring beloved characters from Banned Book Club and No Rules Tonight, Good Old-Fashioned Korean Spirit is a standalone story that melds tradition with the unexpected, and the spooky with the sweet.
Kim Hyun Sook (she/her) was hunted down by the police for reading banned books in 1980s South Korea. Her Freeman Award–winning graphic novel about the experience, Banned Book Club, has now been banned in Florida. Kim is her family name. You can call her Hyun Sook.Ryan Estrada (he/him) is the Eisner-nominated co-creator of Banned Book Club, No Rules Tonight, Occulted, Learn to Read Korean in 15 Minutes, and the Student Ambassador series. Candid, comforting, and practical, this graphic novel is an endearing portrayal of the ups and downs of living with ADHD.Kiki has always felt different from other people: She loses track of time, she daydreams when she should be paying attention, she questions all the rules and shows her emotions more strongly than her friends. But through trial and error (and error and error), she discovers her own ways to succeed and to connect with her loved ones. And eventually, she discovers a truth that makes all the difference—that she has been living with undiagnosed ADHD. Now, Kiki can get real help in managing her disorder and a new understanding of why she has been feeling more like an alien than a typical high school student.Through disarmingly honest fictional anecdotes and enlightening interludes that explain the specifics of ADHD, Pina Varnel shares her own life experiences and hard-won knowledge.
Pina Varnel (she/they) is a visual development artist from Germany. Her frustration with the stigma and misconceptions around ADHD led her to share her personal knowledge of the disorder via her popular and practical Instagram comics. This is her first book.
