The most complete Gilgamesh in translation, including the new discoveries from tablet V. The Epic of Gilgamesh is the Uhr epic - the hero's journey, quest, and education - inscribed onto damp clay tablets several millennia before Odysseus or the priest of Ecclesiastes found their voices. Sumerian versions of the epic date back almost 5000 years. It is a Bildungsroman of a bad king learning to become a proper human being and therefore a wise king, and to do so, besides defeating lions and monsters and surviving great physical and emotional suffering, he must face, and answer, the first (and last) great question: mortality. Translated into English and presented here in its entirety as a graphic novel, this version of The Epic of Gilgamesh is a father/son project by scholar and translator Kent H. Dixon and his son, the comix artist Kevin Dixon, who bring a fresh take on this great work. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

A Cinderella story for the Internet age! A few years ago, 32-year-old Markus 'Notch' Persson of Stockholm was an unknown and bored computer programmer. Today, he is a multi-millionaire international icon. Minecraft, the 'virtual Lego' game Markus crafted in his free time, has become one of the most talked about activities since Tetris. Talked about by tens of millions of people, in fact. It is the story of unlikely success, fast money, and the power of digital technology to rattle an empire. And it is about creation, exclusion, and the feeling of not fitting in. Here Markus opens up for the first time about his life. About his old Lego-filled desk at school. About the first computer his father brought home one day. But also about growing up in a family marked by drug abuse and conflict. But above all it is the story of the fine line between seeming misfit and creative madman, and the birth of a tech visionary. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

Award-winning Ukranian author Artem Chapeye’s new novel follows a young couple who escape city life to the mountains in Ukraine, only to discover an altered reality upon their return. As in Ling Ma’s Severance and Emily Mandel’s Station Eleven, the survivors must seek ways to retain their humanity and help to build a new world in a post-apocalyptic dystopia. After a young couple return from their summer in the Carpathian Mountains in Ukraine, they discover that the world as they once knew it no longer exists. Survivors are forced to adapt to the harsh conditions of their new reality: a place where erosion floats in on a breeze, and ceasing to exist comes with a deceptively joyous capitulation. Overcoming deeply rooted fears, they try to forge another world, uniting with those who continue to fight the darker urges that can emerge when a society must rebuild. Will the couple be able to survive, make alliances with others, and give birth to a new generation? Will the insidiousness of human nature manifest itself in this new, post-apocalyptic world? Filled with beautifully melancholic and black humor, The Weathering becomes a kind of study of behavior in critical situations when everything that once seemed stable falls apart.

With Peter Glanting's powerful illustrations, author Adam Bessie, an English professor and graphic essayist, uses the unique historical moment of the COVID-19 pandemic as a catalyst to explore the existing inequalities and student struggles that plague the public education system. This graphic memoir chronicles the reverberations from the onset of the pandemic in 2020 when students and educators left their physical classrooms for remote learning. As a professor at a community college, Bessie shows how despite these challenges, teachers work tirelessly to create a more equitable educational system by responding to mental health issues and student needs. One of the bloodiest and longest lasting revolutionary movements in Latin America described in graphic form.Rupay, in Quechua, means ardor, fire. On May 17th, 1980, the Shining Path, a Maoist group in Peru, burned the electoral records in a small town in the Ayacucho region to ignite the revolution that would set all of Peru aflame. This graphic novel retells the events relating to the start of the conflict, between 1980 and 1984, and the political violence that continued through 1990. Cossio Guevara charts the first subversive acts by the Shining Path, the government response, the escalation of violence, the response from the media and Peruvian intellectuals, and the brutality and impunity with which the repression was carried out, as well as such brutal episodes as the burning of polling in Chuschi, the Lucanamarca massacre, the mass graves in Putis, and the massacres of Aranhuay and Paccha.Masterfully drawn, this graphic novel is the chronicle of the tragedy and barbarism that challenged the poorest and most vulnerable members of Peruvian society, revealing the racist, classist, and apathetic attitudes from the criminals, government officials, military officers, business groups, and unaffected civilians alike. This book immortalizes the victims and recounts these events so that this tragic history is not lost to obscurity or repeated.
JESÚS COSSÍO GUEVARA is a Peruvian illustrator, author, and editor of comic books and graphic novels. He has published numerous books and zines, including El cerdo volador, Pánico, Juventud moderna, and Ciudades convertidas en selvas. In 2003, Cossio was awarded a Rockfeller Foundation Fellowship in the Humanities, which he used, in part, to complete the graphic novel Rupay: Historias gráficas sobre la violencia política 1980–1984 and its subsequent volume Barbarie: Cómics sobre la violencia política 1985–1990.Writer, curator, and art historian ALFREDO VILLAR is the author of Papá huayco (2024), Yawar chicha: los ríos profundos de la música tropical peruana (2024), and Búmm! Historieta y humor gráfico en el Perú: 1978–1992 (2015). He was awarded a 2004 Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship in the Humanities, alongside Jesús Cossío Guevara, for the research and co-writing of Rupay: Historias gráficas sobre la violencia política 1980–1984.

A graphic novel that brings Chomsky's political analysis to bear on people's stories. The Instinct for Cooperation balances those stories of struggle with conversations the author has had with Chomsky on how best to understand them. Bear, Staffan Gnosspelius's debut book, is a gorgeous visual meditation on depression. In this deeply affecting, wordless picture book for adults, a bear is maddeningly afflicted with a cone that covers his head and that he is unable to take off. He furiously stomps and yells and tears at the cone, he implores the skies and fate for relief, he is drawn to dark and wild and scary places. The depths of his sadness feel like a defeat. It's a battle he wages until he's mentally and physically exhausted. Then, one day, Bear hears notes of music, the humming of a friendly hare. The hare hovers nearby, concerned, sometimes driven away by Bear's frustration and anger, more often staying close and gently offering support. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

We Live Here! is a graphic novel biography of the members of the local activist group Detroit Eviction Defense combatting-and beating-calls for their eviction. By illustrating the stories of families struggling against evictions, the book gives a voice to those who have remained in Detroit, showing the larger complexities at work in a beleaguered city. These are everyday people fighting back, organizing with others, going into the streets, and winning their homes back. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

In the Italian countryside, Guido and his friends Moreno and Katango spin out their days in languor and boredom intermixed with desire and, occasionally, violence. Nearby live the Stancic, a family of Romani who escaped the communist regime of Marshal Tito and settled here just after World War II. Guido's coming-of-age is changed by the evolving relationship that the rural town has with this group of outsiders, these 'gypsies.' The author is unsparing in his depiction of the townspeople's cruelty. And yet, there are also many instances of solidarity between Guido's community and the Stancic.
