From the very first issue of pulp impresario Martin Goodman's Marvel Comics in 1939, Marvel created a mythological universe grounded in a world that readers recognize as close to their own, brimming with humor and heartache. In the early 1960s, this audacious approach launched the creation of heroes who have since become household names - Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, the Avengers, Thor, the X-Men, the list goes on. In celebration of Marvel's 75th anniversary, TASCHEN presents a magnum opus of the most influential comic book publisher today, with an inside look not only at its celebrated characters, but also at the 'bullpen' of architects whose names are almost as familiar as the protagonists they brought to life - Stan 'the Man' Lee, Jack 'King' Kirby, along with a roster of greats like Steve Ditko, John Romita, John Buscema, Marie Severin, and countless others. With essays by comics historian and former Marvel editor-in-chief Roy Thomas, this book delves into the heart of thousands of costumed characters who continue to fight the good fight in comics, movies, and toy aisles of the world. In 1962, he was created by exposure to gamma radiation in Incredible Hulk #1. Not only did the Hulk fight anyone who got in his way, but his alter ego, Bruce Banner, fought the multiple personality disorder that transformed him, spawning many other versions of the Hulk, each of whom were aspects of Bruce's personality. Despite that, the Hulk took down the Leader, the Abomination, and Wolverine, among hundreds of other great villains. The star of a smash-hit TV show, two blockbuster movies, and hundreds of great comics, he's one of the most instantly recognizable characters in the world. Text in English, French, and German. Called the Bruegel of underground art, Robert Crumb is an American icon of comic introspection, cultural satire, and sexual obsession. This new collection presents an affordable 444-page trip through the hippie years, 1968-1975, personally sourced by the artist from his original sketchbooks. R. Crumb Sketchbook, Volume 2: Sept. 1968 - Jan. 1975 combines the two middle volumes from the second boxed set, produced directly from the original artworks. This book contains hundreds of sketches from the master of underground comic art, including cover roughs for Zap, Motor City and Despair comics, the introduction of Aline, and much more, all wrapped up in front and back illustrations newly hand-colored by Crumb himself. The 1970s: that magical era betwixt the swinging '60s and the decadent '80s, the epoch of leisure suits and Afros, the age of disco music and platform shoes. As war raged on in Vietnam and the Cold War continued to escalate, Hollywood began to heat up, recovering from its commercial crisis with box-office successes such as Star Wars, Jaws, The Exorcist, and The Godfather. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, while the Nouvelle Vague died out in France, its influence extended to Germany, where the New German Cinema of Fassbinder, Wenders, and Herzog had its heyday. From the very beginning, even before the sexual revolution made Robert Crumb the world's most celebrated underground cartoonist, he felt compelled to commit his sexual fantasies to paper. Once upon a time, he'd destroy them, fearful of others discovering his quirky tastes. Then he found that baring his soul provided a sort of therapy, leading him to immortalize every desire in pen and ink. This compact new edition, sourced from the same Robert Crumb Sketchbooks 1964-1982, offers the same high-quality obsession at a bargain price. Through satire, psychedelia, and outlandish sexually obsessed characters, 448 pages bring the best of Crumb's prolific mid-1960's period of June 1964 to September 1968. In 1947, Bill Gaines inherited his legendary father's fledgling publishing company, EC Comics. Over the next eight years, he and a 'who's who' of the era including Al Feldstein, Harvey Kurtzman, and Wally Wood would reinvent the very notion of the comic book with titles like Tales from the Crypt, Weird Science, and MAD. With more than 1,000... In 1947, Bill Gaines inherited EC Comics, a new venture founded by his legendary father M. C. Gaines, who was responsible for midwifing the birth of the comic book as we know it during his tenure at All-American Comics, bringing the likes of Wonder Woman and Green Lantern to the world. Over the next eight years, Bill Gaines and a 'who's who' of the era including Al Feldstein, Harvey Kurtzman, and Wally Wood would reinvent the very notion of the comic book with titles like Tales from the Crypt, Crime SuspenStories, Weird Science, and MAD. EC delighted in publishing gory, morbid horror and crime comics that had snap, ironic endings-but they also pioneered the first true-to-life war comics, the first 'real' science-fiction stories, and a series of tales about such then-taboo subjects as racism, bigotry, vigilantism, drug addiction, police corruption, and anti-Semitism. Too good to last, they were eventually caught up by various 1950s guardians of morality, who were convinced that EC's often over-the-top content was causing juvenile delinquency. A year or so after a full inquiry investigating horror and crime comics, the incredible EC Comics were no more. TASCHEN presents the full, fascinating story of this fabled company, written and designed by EC-expert Grant Geissman. Even the most die-hard EC Fan-Addicts will find something new within these pages, with the Gaines family archives providing more than 100 rarities that have never seen print. Many of the cover images are reproduced from Gaines File Copies, which are widely regarded as the best surviving copies of the EC Comics. Gathering more than 1,000 illustrations that include the rarest and most notorious covers, interior pages and panels, photos, vintage original artwork, and some of the most celebrated stories ever to be printed in four colors for a dime, this is the ultimate EC Comics compendium and a must-have for any comics enthusiast or pop culture historian. Walt Disney dreamed for decades about opening the ultimate entertainment venue, but it wasn't until the early 1950s that his handpicked team began to bring his vision to life. Together, artists, architects, and engineers transformed a dusty tract of orange groves into one of the world's most beloved destinations, one that every child in America begs to visit. The original Disneyland in Anaheim, California, remains one of America's most popular attractions, drawing over 16 million visitors each year. This bountiful visual history draws on Disney's vast archives, private collections, and the golden age of photojournalism to provide unique access to the concept, development, launch, and enjoyment of this sun-drenched oasis of fun and fantasy. Taschen surveys Robert Crumb's career in the 6-volume Robert Crumb Sketchbook series. Each 440-page volume, the first four combining two volumes each of the limited edition set, produced directly from the original artworks now belonging to an ardent French collector, spotlights a different era of Crumb's work, providing a chronological overvue of the artist, his life and interests, and his artistic development. Volume 1 (June 1964 to Sept. 1968) includes cover roughs for the legendary Zap and Head comics, the original Keep On Truckin' sketches, the first appearance of Mr. Natural, Fritz The Cat, and more. Volume 2 (Sept. 1968 to Jan. 1975) features the introduction of Aline, the first female Yetis, San Francisco drug culture and more. Volume 3 (1975-1982) includes Crumb's move to rural California, his marriage to Aline Kominsky, and the birth of daughter Sophie. Volume 4 (1982-1989), when the artist was comfortably ensconced in rural California, fills its pages with Crumb's signature perversions (in country settings), and scathing social commentary. Volume 5 (1989-1998) finds Crumb at age 46, solidly into the midlife crises years, and the family's move to Sauve, France, in 1991 heralds a switch from portraits of apple-cheeked American girls to portraits of girls in French cafes and pastorals of rampant French countryside. Finally, Volume 6 (1998-2011) finds Crumb still illustrating sex fantasies and ranting against the human condition, but increasingly working from photos and historical themes such as the atrocity of Abu Ghraib and historic tableaus such as Piers the Ploughman of 14th century England. Crumb produced a consistent body of work over the last 40, if not 50, years, yet each page is also jarringly different from the one before. So much is packed in you can spend an hour and find you're only a quarter of the way through, with Crumb bemoaning his mortality, while continuing to prosper, every few pages. A fine stand-alone volume, and must-have completion for the sketchbook set. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

Horror is both the most perennially popular and geographically diverse of all film genres; arguably, every country that makes movies makes horror movies of one kind or another. Depicting deep-rooted, even archetypal fears, while at the same time exploiting socially and culturally specific anxieties, cinematic horror is at once timeless and utterly of its time and place. This exciting visual history, which includes unique images from the David Del Valle archive, examines the genre in thematic, historical, and aesthetic terms. In 1935, DC Comics founder Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson published New Fun #1, the first comic book with all-new, all-original comic material. What began as disposable media for children was soon on its way to becoming the mythology of our time, the 20th century's answer to Atlas or Zorro. More than 40,000 comic books later and in honor of the publisher's 75th anniversary, TASCHEN has produced the single most comprehensive book on DC Comics. More than 2,000 images - covers and interiors, original illustrations, photographs, film stills, and collectibles - are reproduced using the latest technology to bring the story lines, the characters, and their creators to vibrant life as they've never been seen before. The 2010 original XL edition of 75 Years of DC Comics was winner of the 2011 Eisner Comic Industry Award for Best Comics-Related Book of the Year! But as even Superman might have trouble lifting the XL, here is the chance to enjoy the title in a smaller format. And if it is still too heavy for you, the slipcase converts into a book stand, so you can delight in your favorite comic stories and characters book on display.
