In the early 1940s, Matt Baker became of one the earliest African-American comic book artists. But it wasn't the color of his skin which made him such a significant figure in the history of the medium. Imagine Dave Stevens or Adam Hughes working in the '40s, drawing a new story every month, and you'll have a good idea of Matt Baker's place in the industry throughout his career. Yet few of today's comic book fans know of the artist or his work, because he died in 1959 at the young age of 38, just as the Silver Age of Comics was bringing in a new generation of readers. TwoMorrows Publishing presents Marvel Comics in the 1980s, the third volume in Pierre Comtois' heralded series, which covers Marvel's final historical phase. The 1980s saw Stan Lee's retreat to the West Coast, Jim Shooter's rise and fall as editor-in-chief, the twin triumphs of Frank Miller and John Byrne, the challenge of independent publishers, and the weakening hold of the Comics Code Authority that led to the company's creative downfall. Comics such as the Chris Claremont/John Byrne X-Men, Frank Miller's Daredevil, the new wave of dark heroes such as Wolverine and the Punisher, and more are all covered, in analytic detail and often irreverent manner. In the 1980s, writer Steve Gerber was embroiled in a lawsuit against Marvel Comics over ownership of his creation Howard The Duck. To raise funds for legal fees, Gerber asked Jack Kirby to contribute to a benefit comic titled Destroyer Duck. Without hesitation, Kirby, in his own dispute with Marvel at the time, donated his services for the first issue, and the duo took aim at their former employer in an outrageous five-issue run. With biting satire and guns blazing, Duke 'Destroyer' Duck battled the thinly veiled Godcorp (whose infamous credo was 'Grab it all! Own it all! Drain it all!'), its evil leader Ned Packer and the (literally) spineless Booster Cogburn, Medea (a parody of Daredevil's Elektra), and more! Now, all five Gerber/Kirby issues are collected. relettered and reproduced from Jack's unbridled, uninked pencil art! Also included are select examples of Alfredo Alcala's unique inking style over Kirby on the original issues, Gerber's script pages, an historical Introduction by Mark Evanier, and an Afterword by Buzz Dixon. by George Khoury In 1992, seven artists shook the comic book industry when they left Marvel Comic to jointly form a new company. In Image Comics, they formed a home that would allow themselves and other artists the opportunity to tell stories without any censorship or editorial restraints and give creators full ownership of their properties. Image Comics: The Road to Independence is an unprecedented look at the history of this important comic book company, featuring interviews and art from Image founders Erik Larsen, Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri, and Jim Valentino.
