By John Pham Two white supremacist brothers live in the midst of an 'ethnic' urban flood along with a dog they've trained as a weapon. A household made up of three renters, a landlord who never leaves her attic bedroom, and her son, who insists on wearing a sheet over his head all the time. A pack of ravenous stray dogs chase a cat down a desolate alleyway. The lonely, grimy silhouette of Los Angeles, ever-present. All these separate threads weave through the first part of 221 Sycamore St., an ongoing story about the desperate need for family in two distinct households that share an indelible yet mysterious connection.Sublife is the engaging new series from emerging talent John Pham (Epoxy, MOME). Similar in format to other great one-man anthology comics before it (Eightball, Acme Novelty Library, Jim), Sublife presents a variety of stories told in a range of styles and voices, all demonstrating a singular vision. Issue one features the first self-contained chapter of 221 Sycamore St. as well as St. Ambrose, a fractured memoir of the author's grade school alma mater.John Pham won the Xeric Grant in 2000 and has been featured in publications such as Giant Robot, The Face, MOME and The Comics Journal. by Jim Woodring Jim Woodring's charcoal drawings take the otherworldly qualities of his comics (The Frank Book) to a higher level of clarity and nuance. These crisply rendered images reflect his life-long obsession with hidden worlds, alternate realities and the inexplicable resonance of the unprecedented and irrational in lucid art. Seeing Things collects the most toothsome of these drawings and arranges them in four sections. 'Lazy Robinson' is a series of portraits of forms taken by a cognizant object during the course of a specific and identifiable stream of thought. 'Frogs' celebrates the tender proclivities of the most noble of all animals, by placing them in situations that would dismay a horde of saints. 'The Visible World' is a roundup of appalling scenes of sub-rational political activity involving catalytic entities with a high ratio of motivation to altruism. And 'The Portfolio in Color' appears like a rainbow at the end of all this exalted storminess to send readers out into the world whistling with delight. Many of these images were created for 'Mysterio Sympatico,' Woodring's multimedia stage collaboration with guitarist Bill Frisell. There is plenty of echoless, glowing furniture to add to that already crowded storeroom which is briefly, but brilliantly, illuminated in the pages of this stately book. by Martin Kellerman Martin Kellerman is the Jane Austen of 21st century twenty-something urban European slackers. Firmly in the tradition of Fritz the Cat, Hate, and Clerks, Rocky is his mostly autobiographical daily strip detailing the rudely hilarious travails of a young cartoonist and his circle of layabout pals and neurotic, indignant girlfriends. In this action-packed volume collecting the first year of the smash-hit strip, Rocky gets tossed out of his apartment, flies across the pond to visit a gay African-American pal (not realizing he lives in deepest Harlem); is ill-advisedly given the mission of euthanizing a friend's beloved pet rabbit ('Tom, give this job to Clemenza.' 'Yes, Godfather.'); makes a spectacularly unsuccessful attempt to trade in his girlfriend for her younger, more buxom sister; gets a bowel inflammation and a colonoscopy; goes to a costume party dressed as Tinky Winky; tries to get laid while camping out at a rock festival - and basically drinks and fornicates (or tries to) his way through Stockholm and New York, with hangover following drunken binge and mortification following faux pas as night follows day. What will probably be amazing to American readers is how similar the day-to-day experiences of these Seinfeld-watching, Big Mac-eating, hip-hop-listening Swedes is to theirs. Rocky is a reminder as to how utterly global our culture has become - and a reminder that laughter is truly universal. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

by Dan Clowes TWENTIETH CENTURY EIGHTBALL collects the very best humor strips from Eightball, written and drawn between 1988 and 1996. Included within are such seminal strips as 'I Hate You Deeply,' 'Sexual Frustration,' 'Ugly Girls,' 'Why I Hate Christians,' 'Message to the People of the Future,' 'Paranoid,' 'My Suicide,' 'Chicago,' and over three dozen more. Also included is Clowes' hilariously Freudian deconstruction of professional athletes, 'On Sports,' which caused a stir in San Antonio when reprinted in the city's most popular weekly paper, prompting an advertising boycott and demands for the paper to be destroyed by local sports fans. Further on display is Clowes' absurdist sense of humor, from strips like 'Zubrick and Pogeybait' and 'Hippypants and Peace-Bear' to 'Grip Glutz,' 'The Sensual Santa,' and 'Feldman.' Noted comics historian Roger Sabin, author of Phaidon's Comics, Comix and Graphic Novels, calls Eightball a 'corrosively satirical vision of an America cracking apart, and confirms Clowes as a worthy successor to the underground greats of the 1960s.' With over 40 pages in color TWENTIETH CENTURY EIGHTBALL is sure to be one of Clowes' most popular books for years to come. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

by Daniel Clowes The dramatic short stories included in this softcover edition of CARICATURE have drawn comparisons to Nabokov for their complex naturalism and sense of humor. Anchored by the title story, considered the first apotheosis of Clowes' seminal Eightball underground comic book series, CARICATURE also includes eight other stories, including 'Green Eyeliner,' a six-page full-color short story originally published in Esquire as the first work of comics to be featured in the magazine's fiction issue (and commissioned by then-editor Dave Eggers). by Cathy Malkasian Cathy Malkasian has made the jump from animation to the printed page with a graceful, delicate leap. Humorous and bewitching at the same time, Percy Gloom is a unique gem of a story. Occupying an unreal world of secret societies, benevolent families, and bureaucratic security, lazy-eyed Percy Gloom fights to overcome the loss of his wife, Lila, to a truth-pointing, lotharian, cult-leader. Approached by his doctor to help protect some special people and given advice by some talking goats, Percy comes to terms with his place in the gloomy world and finds himself reaching enlightenment (literally). by E.C. Segar This second volume of the acclaimed hit series collecting the entirety of E.C. Segar's original Popeye (a.k.a. Thimble Theatre) comic strips begins with a foreword by Beetle Bailey creator Mort Walker, and continues with an introduction by noted film and cartooning critic Donald Phelps. This second volume features work from 1930 to 1932, and most notably includes the debut of Segar's second greatest character: J. Wellington Wimpy, which stands as a one-of-a-kind icon some 70 years after his creation - the most likeable lowdown cad ever to grace the comics page. Popeye Volume 2 includes the stories: 'Clint Gore' (continued from the cliffhanger last volume); 'A One-Way Bank,' in which Popeye opens a bank that allows withdrawals but no deposits; a long war story featuring King Blozo that begins with 'The Great Rough-House War'; and 'Skullyville,' which wraps up the daily strips for this volume. by Fletcher Hanks Fletcher Hanks worked for only a few years in the earliest days of the comic book industry (1939-1941). Because he worked in a gutter medium for second-rate publishers on third rate characters, his work has been largely forgotten. But among aficionados he is legendary. Hanks drew in a variety of genres depicting science-fiction saviors, white women of the jungle, and he-man loggers. This book collects 15 of his best stories in one volume followed by an Afterword which solves the mystery of 'Whatever Happened to Fletcher Hanks', the mysterious cartoonist who created a hailstorm of tales of brutal retribution ... and then mysteriously vanished.
