by Johnny Ryan The book includes several stories featuring Johnny Ryan's signature creation, Loady McGee (and straight-man Synus O'Gynus), a misanthropic, acne-scarred hustler who finds himself in scams that would make Wimpy proud, and responds to almost everything with an endless stream of wisecracks, puns, and X-rated double-entendres. Loady's ridiculous crackpot schemes serve as perfect comic set-ups, and Ryan's art is crammed with visual gags and existential asides that bring to mind the great Will Elder (MAD Magazine). Needless to say, this is definitely not politically-correct stuff, nor is it for children. Ryan's in-your-face humor spares no prisoners, as these stories indicate: 'Hipler,' a riotous satire of our 'extreme makeover' era and celebrity culture; 'Ku Klux Kuties,' which tests just how far the usual doe-eyed visual tropes can be taken and still make you go, Awwww; and Ryan's most infamous strip to-date, 'The Gaytriot,' which caused a PC-stir when it was included in The Comics Journal's otherwise-sincere and serious 'Cartoonists on Patriotism' volume in 2002. Find out why Johnny Ryan is the most acclaimed (and controversial) humor cartoonist to burst onto the comic scene since Peter Bagge (HATE). (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

'Don't try to pass a pop quiz on Dante's Hell based on a reading of this comic,' warns Gary Panter. 'It won't work. Even though the comic is engorged with Dante's Hell and though Jimbo mouths a super-condensed version of what happens in The Inferno, canto by canto, characters are fused, actions inverted, parodied, subject to mutation by my odd memories and obsessions and whims...' That said, Jimbo's Inferno is the hugely anticipated sequel (or prequel, as it was actually completed first) to Jimbo In Purgatory. In this oversize hardcover cloth-and-gold-finished volume, produced to the same exacting standards as 2004's Purgatory, Jimbo, accompanied by his trusty guide and ride Valise, visits Hell (here envisioned as a gigantic subterranean shopping mall called Focky Bocky), and in so doing runs across minotaurs, drug-addled punkettes, UFOs, giant robots, and more, leading him to such profound questions as, 'Why do so many recreational activities involve smoke and heat?' by R. Kikuo Johnson First-rate prep school, SUV, and a dream house in the heights - this was the island paradise handed to Loren Foster when he moved to Hawaii with his father six years ago. Now, with the end of high school just around the corner, his best friend, Shane, has grown distant. The rumors say its hard drugs, and Loren suspects that Shane has left him behind for a new group of friends. What sets Kikuo's drama apart is the naturalistic ease with which he explores the relationships of his characters. It is at once an unsentimental portrait of that most awkward period between adolescence and young adulthood and that rarest of things - a mature depiction of immature lives. by Hank Ketcham Hank Ketcham's Complete Dennis the Menace is one of the most successful books in the company's history, greeted by reviews with praise similar to that garnered by The Complete Peanuts. This third volume publishes every single panel strip from 1955 and 1956 in one handsome and thick hardcover volume. Ketcham's legendary pen and ink work achieves its full flowering in this volume, as do the various situations and themes that Ketcham would return to: the first 'split screen' (two-panel strip) that Ketcham would occasionally use; Dennis actually flirts with a girl; he rats Dad out to Mom; exacerbates confrontations between Dad and the police; and stymies hapless baby-sitters. Oh, and Mr. Wilson finally comes front-and-center as Dennis' #1 victim! (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

o Superb reproduction from the original printer's film negativeso Deluxe, hardcover editiono Breathtaking art from several acknowledged masters of the formo Candid, revealing interviews with Blazing Combat publisher James Warren and writer/editor Archie Goodwin. Blazing Combat was an American war-comics magazine published by Warren Publishing from 1965 to 1966. Written and edited by Archie Goodwin, with artwork by such industry notables as Gene Colan, Frank Frazetta, John Severin, Alex Toth, Al Williamson, Russ Heath, Reed Crandall, and Wally Wood, it featured war stories in both contemporary and period settings, unified by a humanistic theme of the personal costs of war, rather than by traditional men's adventure motifs. As one letter writer in the third issue put it, 'Do you seriously expect to make money with a war magazine that publishes nothing but anti-war stories?'While most stories took place during World War II, they ranged in settings from the 18th century to the present-day. Some dealt with historical figures, such as Revolutionary War general Benedict Arnold and his pre-traitorous victory at the Battle of Saratoga, while 'Foragers' focused on a fictitious soldier in General William T. Sherman's devastating March to the Sea during the American Civil War. 'Holding Action', set on the last day of the Korean War, ended with a gung-ho young soldier, unwilling to quit, being escorted over his protests into a medical vehicle. What proved to be the most controversial were stories set during the contemporary Vietnam War, particularly the classic short 'Landscape', which follows the thoughts of a Vietnamese peasant rice-farmer devoid of ideology, who nonetheless pays the ultimate price simply for living where he does. While writer Goodwin evenhandedly portrays the North Vietnamese Army brutal summary executions of village officials, and a well-meaning U.S. Army fatally bludgeoning its way through the village in a counterattack, the story caused key distributors to stop selling the title. AMERICA'S STUPIDEST SECOND-GRADER IS BACK! Sure, she's smelly and gross, but she's got a heart of gold! This is the third collection of Johnny Ryan's weekly comic strip, Blecky Yuckerella, as seen in the pages of the Vice magazine and elsewhere. Blecky is a four-panel gag strip in the tradition of Underworld, Maakies, and Nancy, but with much more generous portions of bodily fluids and toilet humor. Blecky Yuckerella is the ugliest girl in the second grade, and the only one with three-day stubble. The strip's cast of characters also includes Blecky's Aunt Jiggles, her best friend Wedgie, Insanio the Cat, and many other absurdist goofballs, like Rich Bucksley (millionaire and 'high class idiot'), Unitard (the last retarded unicorn), the pregnant babies ('we're guaranteed to blow your mind!'), and Quasimodo Rose (the hunchback porn star). This book collects over 100 strips for the first time, and his unmistakable blend of politically incorrect gags and social satire is as sharp as ever. Ted Stearn's cult favorite heroes Fuzz and Pluck (a rooster and a bear) return in this hilariously bizarre and charming graphic novel. Fired from his degrading job at the fast food restaurant Lardy's, Pluck is taken in by Glibbia Honey, the manager for a ragtag team of gladiators. After witnessing the first contest (which involves a badger, a bag of garbage, a mallet, and five rats), Pluck vows that he himself will one day become the champion of this preposterous sport. Meanwhile, Fuzz is out on his trusty tricycle making another Lardy's delivery, unaware of Pluck's career change. He soon finds himself trapped in a bedroom full of clueless stuffed animals. When he finally escapes, he meets a dotty old ferryman determined to beat out his only competition - a bridge. Fuzz takes on the Sysiphean task of helping his friend the ferryman compete with his nemesis.Meanwhile, back in the Machiavellian world of the gladiator games, Pluck accomplishes his goal - until he finally meets his match. A mad race and tug of war culminates in a fatal convergence that changes everything for our two poor misfits. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

By Mort Walker and Jerry Dumas $19.99 Paperback Original Humor / Comic Strips 208 pages, black-and-white, 10' x 8' A SHORT-LIVED '60s COMIC STRIP STARRING THE YELLOW KID, JIGGS AND CHARLIE BROWN!? Sam's Strip was ahead of its time when it debuted in 1961. Mort Walker and Jerry Dumas' offbeat creation took the inside joke of breaking the 'fourth wall' to a new level, playing with the basic elements of the cartoon form, experimenting with different art styles and featuring famous characters from other strips. Sam and his cartoonist assistant owned and operated the comic strip they inhabited. The Yellow Kid, Jiggs, Krazy Kat, Dagwood, and Charlie Brown were among the many familiar faces who made walk-on appearances. Sam and his assistant discussed the inner workings and hidden secrets of life within the panel borders. This type of self-referential humor, called 'metacomics' by scholar Thomas Inge, had been explored previously by Al Capp, Ernie Bushmiller, and Walt Kelly and has been used on a more regular basis by such contemporary cartoonists as Garry Trudeau, Berke Breathed, and Bill Griffith. Sam's Strip, which never appeared in more than 60 newpapers, was too esoteric for most readers, and was terminated by its creators in 1963. It is considered a cult classic among comic-strip aficionados today. This collections features the complete 20-month run, almost 510 daily strips, of Sam's Strip. Mort Walker and Jerry Dumas provide first-hand accounts of the creation of the strip and other rare, behind-the-scenes material, including unpublished sketches, original artwork, photographs and sales brochures. Take a trip beyond the fourth wall and rediscover this unique behind-the-scenes look at the world of comic strip humor. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels
