Daddy Warbucks, Annie, and Sandy ('Arf!') hit their hardest times yet in the fifth volume of Fantagraphics' complete reprinting of Harold Gray's classic comic strip of optimism, honesty against all odds, and self-reliance. The action kicks off with an unshaven Warbucks leading Annie from town to town looking for jobs that never turn up. Through a twist of fate, however, Warbucks becomes reunited with his old friend Harry Morgan, a millionaire whose life he'd saved long ago, and through Morgan Annie meets a new, if at first frightening, friend: Punjab, a super-strong mystic whom Annie can summon at a moment's notice with a blow on a dragon whistle. Together, they face industrial espionage when the evil financier J. Gordon Slugg hires an army of thugs to assassinate Warbucks and his crew. Fate is never predictable, however, and just when things seem to be working out, Annie gets separated from Warbucks, Punjab and the rest, and falls into the hands of the manipulators, cheats, and crooks of Hollywood on her own when a crooked agent promises her motion-picture stardom. Little Orphan Annie Volume 5: 1935 includes a whole year's worth of comics artistry and enjoyment from the golden age of adventure serials, introduced by comics historian R.C. Harvey, who gives the strips historical context, making these strips as immediate and exciting today as they were for the readers of 1935. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

This volume concludes strip creator Segar's run on the series with a Goon Island adventure. Few comic-strip characters have had the phenomenal staying power of Popeye, who still endures 70 years after his first appearance. This collection of the original Thimble Theater, written and drawn by Popeye creator Segar himself, shows the strip at its magnificent peak! (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

by Johnny Ryan The book includes several stories featuring Johnny Ryan's signature creation, Loady McGee (and straight-man Synus O'Gynus), a misanthropic, acne-scarred hustler who finds himself in scams that would make Wimpy proud, and responds to almost everything with an endless stream of wisecracks, puns, and X-rated double-entendres. Loady's ridiculous crackpot schemes serve as perfect comic set-ups, and Ryan's art is crammed with visual gags and existential asides that bring to mind the great Will Elder (MAD Magazine). Needless to say, this is definitely not politically-correct stuff, nor is it for children. Ryan's in-your-face humor spares no prisoners, as these stories indicate: 'Hipler,' a riotous satire of our 'extreme makeover' era and celebrity culture; 'Ku Klux Kuties,' which tests just how far the usual doe-eyed visual tropes can be taken and still make you go, Awwww; and Ryan's most infamous strip to-date, 'The Gaytriot,' which caused a PC-stir when it was included in The Comics Journal's otherwise-sincere and serious 'Cartoonists on Patriotism' volume in 2002. Find out why Johnny Ryan is the most acclaimed (and controversial) humor cartoonist to burst onto the comic scene since Peter Bagge (HATE). (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

by Johnny Ryan Johnny Ryan is the one-man Mad magazine behind the quarterly comic-book series, Angry Youth Comix. Collecting issues #6-10 of Angry Youth Comix, Johnny Ryan's XXX Scumbag Party features such signature Ryan characters as Boobs Pooter, Loady McGee, Sinus O'Gynus, Baby Johnson, and Blecky Yuckerella. Featured stories include: 'Sherlock McRape in 'Who Hit Nelly in the Belly with Jelly,' 'Battle of the Century' (a thinly-veiled satire of two well-known, anachronistic graphic novelists), the epic 'O'Pussy,' and even-more-epic 'Dry Gulch Follies 2005,' featuring just about every character Ryan ever created in one 25-page comedy masterpiece. Peppering the stories are over 100 hilariously profane gag cartoons peppered throughout the book. (That's a lot of pepper!) (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

THE NEW BOOK FROM THE AUTHOR OF BoTToMLEss BELLY BUTToN One part MOME collection, one part authorized IFC Channel spinoff, the first quarter of this jacketed hardcover will collect the work - storyboards, scripts, character designs, etc. - that Shaw has created for a series of original shorts to begin airing on IFC in Nov. 2009. The latter 3/4ths will collect his acclaimed short stories from MOME, as well as several little-seen stories from elsewhere, and a new 20 page story. The Unclothed Man in the 35th Century A.d. is Shaw's first book since his breakthrough graphic novel of 2008, Bottomless Belly Button, which was named Publishers Weekly's best graphic novel of 2008, one of Entertainment Weekly's top ten books of 2008, and one of Amazon.com's top ten graphic novels of the year, amongst numerous other accolades. The book also collects Shaw's acclaimed, genre-bending short stories from MOME, including 'Look Forward, First Son of Terra Two,' a remarkable story of two lovers traveling in opposite directions (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

THE 2nd 'ISSUE' OF ONE OF 2008'S MOST ACCLAIMED DEBUTS The acclaimed graphic novel anthology continues with sublife, Volume 2. Creator John Pham enlarges the scope and expands the style of his series with an all-new collection of stories and strips. 'The Kid' is a self-contained short story set in an eerily familiar post-apocalyptic future. Bloodthirsty marauders roam the blasted desert. A nomad and his dog, scavenging the road for gas and supplies, stumble upon a sealed bomb shelter, the contents of which will test whatever humanity he has left, as the marauders pursue him to a violent, frenetic climax. 'Deep Space' continues the atmospheric science fiction serial begun in Volume 1. In this episode, Captain Ho, Commander Wallach, and their newly adopted space-faring companion Deek attempt to harness the power of an alien crystal with the hopes of finding a way back home. But will their best-laid plans survive Captain's fragile mental state and impulse-prone behavior? In '221 Sycamore St,' teenage runaway Phineas accompanies his uncles on a training session with their dog Freya, but what they're training Freya to do illustrates the disturbing lengths to which his uncles will take their racist ideology. This chapter builds and expands upon the characters and themes established in the first volume, showcasing a vision of Los Angeles that is sometimes dark and fractured, inhabited by a quirky cast of characters. As if that were not enough, the artist includes various, stand-alone short strips including 'Socko Sarkissian,' a single-page gem about baseball's greatest fictional Armenian slugger, 'St. Ambrose,' a fractured memoir about the author's parochial school alma mater, and 'Mort,' a story that answers the burning question, what happens when a jealous blogger encounters his nemesis? sublife Volume 2 is filled to the brim with a dizzying variety of stories and styles, all of which surprisingly coalesce into a unified reading experience thanks to their shared themes and motifs, much like Chris Ware's annual ACME Novelty Library. Dogs, missed connections, ad hoc family units, desert landscapes are all elements that pop up and recur among the different stories. It makes each volume of sublife eminently readable on its own, and proves why Pham is among the most compelling new voices in comics today. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

by Dash Shaw The Bottomless Belly Button is a 700-plus page comedy-drama that follows the dysfunctional adventures of the Loony Family. After 40-some years of marriage, Maggie and David Loony shock their children with their announcement of a planned divorce, which sparks a week-long Loony family reunion at Maggie and David's creepy - and possibly haunted - beach house. In a six-day period rich with atmospheric sequences, the family stumbles blindly around one another, often ignoring their surroundings and consumed by their own daily conflicts. If the controversial R.D. Laing wrote an episode of The Simpsons, it might read something like this, certain to be one of the major graphic novel releases of the year. Of the 22 stories appearing in SUPERMEN! the vast majority haven't seen print since first publication, including the notorious 1939 Wonder Man debut by Will Eisner. Wonder Man lasted one issue after a successful DC Comics lawsuit cited the similarity to its son of Krypton. This lawsuit inspired more individual and offbeat approaches, and it's on these mavericks and oddballs we focus this collection. The roster features such notables as Basil Wolverton, Jack Kirby, Jack Cole, Fletcher Hanks, Ogden Whitney, Lou Fine, Charles Biro, Fred Guardineer, and Dick Briefer. Fighting villiany is hard work and in SUPERMEN! it's downright ruthless. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

A special feature of The Companion is a sixteen-page color section of carefully selected strips from the entire run of the comic. Showcasing this section are eight pages by Foster, scanned and digitally restored from original color engraver's proofs that had been carefully stored and preserved for over forty years. For the first time ever, collectors will be able to see Prince Valiant as Foster intended it to be seen, with all of his fine inked line work intact. Rounding out this section are four John Cullen Murphy pages from the Murphy family's collection of proofs, and four Gary Gianni pages that were selected by the artist and digitally recolored under his supervision. Harken back to those thrilling days of yesteryear when the advent of rental videos astonished the movie-going consumer who could only feed his addiction by going to the theatre or watching chopped up movies in bewteen commercials on TV. Like vinyl, here is the revenge of another analog cast-off: the VHS is once again insinuating itself into American culture, and this book celebrates the anarchic design art of those early VHS boxes. The Lost Art of the VHS (Vol. 1) reprints some of the most louche, decadent, minimo-pervo artwork to ever grace a VHS box, featuring such movies as From Beyond, Penitentiary II, Beast of the Yellow Night, Cop Killers, Bay of Blood, Escape from Death Row, and Cocaine Wars. A feast for exploitation cognoscenti, The Lost Art of the VHS is a portable grindhouse. Readers will be agog at the plethora of supertrash movie titles, and then move on to rediscover the anarchic box designs. Throughout, editor and cultural historian Jacques Boyreau succinctly narrates the household-piercing story of VHS: 'On par with the jukebox, disco, and neon, VHS reformatted the world's product-intake and boosted a libertarian aesthetic that conquered TV in the same way TV conquered comic books in the 1950s, and allowed us to hold movies in our hands. Posters in the lobby could advertise, even fetishize a movie; credit sequences could identify the participants, but somehow, VHS box-art 'became' the iconic equivalent of the movie.'The Lost Art of VHS is published in a VHS 'format,' slyly packaged inside a facsimile VHS box, and contains almost a hundred reproductions of VHS art with commentary. By John Pham Two white supremacist brothers live in the midst of an 'ethnic' urban flood along with a dog they've trained as a weapon. A household made up of three renters, a landlord who never leaves her attic bedroom, and her son, who insists on wearing a sheet over his head all the time. A pack of ravenous stray dogs chase a cat down a desolate alleyway. The lonely, grimy silhouette of Los Angeles, ever-present. All these separate threads weave through the first part of 221 Sycamore St., an ongoing story about the desperate need for family in two distinct households that share an indelible yet mysterious connection.Sublife is the engaging new series from emerging talent John Pham (Epoxy, MOME). Similar in format to other great one-man anthology comics before it (Eightball, Acme Novelty Library, Jim), Sublife presents a variety of stories told in a range of styles and voices, all demonstrating a singular vision. Issue one features the first self-contained chapter of 221 Sycamore St. as well as St. Ambrose, a fractured memoir of the author's grade school alma mater.John Pham won the Xeric Grant in 2000 and has been featured in publications such as Giant Robot, The Face, MOME and The Comics Journal.
