by Hank Davis Even today, movie serials continue to enchant movie fans. George Lucas' Indiana Jones films were made in tribute to the innocence, energy, and undeniable skill that permeate every reel of these classic serials. The best serials are classic examples of early American low-budget filmmaking. The bad ones are silly and stilted, but always charming and sometimes bizarre. At the very least, they offer a window into another time and place. And with the state the world is in today, it's a very welcome place where the good guys always win, the kid saves the day and the hero gets the girl. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

by Hank Davis These are movie serials. It's okay to appreciate their art and laugh at their lunacy. Not all the laughs were intended, but that shouldn't stop us today. Film isn't grimly serious business. Most of the serials were made for a young Saturday matinee audience, who were much less sophisticated than the savvy film fan of today. There is something wrong if we can't laugh, as well as nod our heads in appreciation, at what these skilled professionals have accomplished, often under very trying conditions and with ridiculously low budgets. Cineastes will gain a new love for the people on both sides of the camera, as well as the producers who hired them and the world in which they were made. by Deborah Painter Man's best friend also happens to be one of Hollywood's best friends as Deborah Painter examines the contribution to the silver screen by lovable, talented and brave stars of the cinema. Their bark was silent but their impact was great as you meet the canine stars of the early silent movies and then trot through time with the likes of Peter the Great, Rin-Tin-Tin, Ace, Flash, Lightnin', Lad, Asta, Lassie, and Benji. These heroes are brave, pure and offer unequivocal love and devotion, and in today's depressing world, it's nice to find some real heroes of the silver screen. by Michael Palin Michael Palin has kept a diary since the late 1960s, when he was newly married and beginning to make a name for himself as a TV scriptwriter. This volume of his diaries reveals how Python emerged and triumphed, how he, John Cleese, Graham Chapman, the two Terrys - Jones and Gilliam - and Eric Idle came together and changed the face of British comedy. Here too is his growing family, his home in a north London Victorian terrace, which grows as he buys the house next door and then a second at the bottom of the garden. Meanwhile Monty Python refuses to go away: the hugely successful movies (Holy Grail and The Life of Brian) that follow the series, the at-times extraordinary goings-on of the many powerful personalities who coalesced to form the Python team, the fight to prevent an American TV network from bleeping out the best jokes on U.S. transmission, and much more - all this makes for funny and riveting reading. by Stephen Thrower Between 1970 and 1985, American exploitation movies went berserk. With censorship rules relaxed and the gate to excess wide open, horror offered a vibrant alternative to the mainstream of American cinema, from the drive-ins of Texas to the grindhouses of New York. Massively popular around the world, these films touted a combination of mind-bruising violence, weird sex, and drug-soaked delirium. These films shocked the conscience and added to America's rich film history, but they have defied cinematic study until now. Nightmare USA explores the development of America's subterranean horror film industry, spotlighting some of the wildest films imaginable. Stephen Thrower has explored the attics and cellars of American cinema, delved beneath its floorboards, peered between the cracks in the walls, searching for the strangest, most exotic cinematic lifeforms. by the JPT Staff & Makoto Nakajima The Akihabara district ('Akiba') in Tokyo, once known as the spot for discount electronics stores, has become a veritable 'theme park' of Japanese pop culture. With shops of all kinds, gaming centers, clubs, bars and restaurants packed into an area of just 700 square meters, the Akiba can be a daunting place to navigate. This clever guidebook presents the wonderfully eccentric appeal of the district in an easy-to-understand and entertaining format - a fusion of manga and practical travel information that will prove invaluable to the foreign visitor. Throughout the book, the reader learns about the development of Akihabara, which evolved from Tokyo's electronics center to the place to go for personal computers, video games, animation and manga, into its most recent incarnation as the hub of street music. by Dominique Jando & Linda Granfield During its heyday one hundred years ago, the American circus was the largest show-biz industry the world had ever seen. The spectacle of death-defying daredevils, strapping super-heroes and scantily-clad starlets, fearless animal trainers, and startling freaks gripped the American imagination, and ultimately paved the way for film and television to take root in the modern era. Long before the Beat generation made 'on the road' expeditions popular, the circus personified the experience and offered many young Americans the dream of adventure, reinvention, and excitement. This book brings to life the grit and glamour behind the circus phenomenon. Organized into nine thematic chapters, the book sheds new light on circus history, from a behind-the-scenes look at life on the move, to the freedoms enjoyed by early female performers, to the innovative production skills that demanded as much know-how as a modern-day film production. For the first time ever, contemporary readers can now experience the legend of the American circus in full effect. The book's broad subject matter, riveting images, and diverse visual material will appeal both to the circus aficionado and those who have never before been to circus. by Scott Plagenhoef & Ryan Schreiber The past thirty years have seen musical genres splinter, creating a world of new sounds and hybrids. During the past five years alone, the advent of mp3 players, Napster, and digital downloads has subdivided even albums themselves. We've entered a period in which individual songs are more popular than full albums, where a single mp3 can turn a band into tomorrow's next big thing. The Pitchfork 500 includes lively, insightful reviews of the 500 most important songs released between January 1977 and December 2006. Beginning with the birth of punk and independent music, it will document the post-boomer era of music that has spanned from such acts as Nirvana, The Clash, Radiohead, and U2, along with hip hop, indie, pop, metal, electronic, and experimental music. Equal parts serious music criticism and pop culture candy, this is the essential music guide of our time, one that considers the changing nature of the modern music landscape, while bringing the changes of the past three decades into focus.
