NEW EDITION WITH 16 EXTRA PAGES! Marvel Comics in the 1970s covers Marvel's final historical phase: the twilight years of the 1970s, after the initial '60s wave of popularity pushed the company to the forefront of the comics industry, and made many of its characters household names. This full decade of pop-culture history saw Stan Lee's role as writer diminish as he ascended to Publisher, the stunning departure of Jack Kirby to DC (and his later return to Marvel), the rise of Roy Thomas as editor (and eventual Editor In Chief), and the introduction of a new wave of writers and artists who would expand the boundaries of comics beyond super-heroes, while planting the seeds for the company's eventual self-destruction. Comics such as the Spider-Man 'drug' issues, Conan the Barbarian, Tomb of Dracula, Master of Kung Fu, Howard the Duck, the new X-Men, and more are covered in detail-along with the creators who wrote and drew them, including Chris Claremont, Barry Windsor-Smith, Gene Colan, Marv Wolfman, Steve Gerber, John Romita, Gil Kane, Sal Buscema, and many others. So don't be satisfied with only half the story! Check out Marvel Comics in the 1970s and find out why Marvel was once hailed as The House of Ideas! (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

In the early 1940s, Matt Baker became of one the earliest African-American comic book artists. But it wasn't the color of his skin which made him such a significant figure in the history of the medium-it was his innate ability to draw gorgeous, exciting women and handsome, dynamic men in a fluid, graceful style. Imagine Dave Stevens or Adam Hughes working in the '40s, drawing a new story every month, and you'll have a good idea of Matt Baker's place in the industry throughout his career. Yet few of today's comic book fans know of the artist or his work, because he died in 1959 at the young age of 38, just as the Silver Age of Comics was blossoming and bringing in a new generation of readers. Matt Baker: The Art of Glamour, edited by Jim Amash and Eric Nolen-Weathington, presents an impressive career cut tragically short. It features a wealth of essays; interviews with Baker's friends, family, and co-workers; and a treasure trove of his finest artwork, including several complete stories, at last giving the wonderfully talented artist his full due. New updated edition! For its 75th issue, The Jack Kirby Collector magazine presents this first-of-its-kind examination of the creators of the Marvel Universe, in an oversized book! Completed just days before Stan Lee's recent passing, Kirby & Lee: Stuf' Said! looks back at the duo's own words - in chronological order, from fanzine, magazine, radio, and television interviews - to paint the most comprehensive and enlightening picture of their relationship ever done... why it succeeded, where it deteriorated, and when it eventually failed. Also, here are recollections from Steve Ditko, Wallace Wood, John Romita, Sr., and more Marvel Bullpen stalwarts who worked with both Kirby and Lee. Rounding out this book is a study of the duo's careers after they parted ways as collaborators, including Kirby's difficulties at Marvel Comics in the 1970s, his last hurrah with Lee on the Silver Surfer Graphic Novel, and his exhausting battle to get back his original art - and creator credit - from Marvel. Stuf''Said! gives both men their say, compares their recollections, and tackles the question, 'Who really created the Marvel Comics Universe?' Compiled, researched, and edited by publisher John Morrow. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Beginning with his WPA etchings during the 1930s, Mac Raboy struggled to survive the Great Depression and eventually found his way into the comic book sweatshops of America. In that world of four-color panels, he perfected his art style on such creations as Dr. Voodoo, Zoro, The Mystery Man, Bulletman, Spy Smasher, Green Lama and his crowning achievement, Captain Marvel Jr. Raboy went on to illustrate the Flash Gordon Sunday newspaper strip, and left behind a legacy of meticulous perfection. Through extensive research and interviews with son David Raboy, and assistants who worked with the artist during the Golden Age of Comics, author Roger Hill brings Mac Raboy, the man and the artist, into focus for historians to savor and enjoy. This full-color hardcover includes never-before-seen photos, a wealth of rare and unpublished artwork, and the first definitive biography of a true Master of the Comics! In the 1980s, writer Steve Gerber was embroiled in a lawsuit against Marvel Comics over ownership of his creation Howard The Duck. To raise funds for legal fees, Gerber asked Jack Kirby to contribute to a benefit comic titled Destroyer Duck. Without hesitation, Kirby, in his own dispute with Marvel at the time, donated his services for the first issue, and the duo took aim at their former employer in an outrageous five-issue run. With biting satire and guns blazing, Duke 'Destroyer' Duck battled the thinly veiled Godcorp (whose infamous credo was 'Grab it all! Own it all! Drain it all!'), its evil leader Ned Packer and the (literally) spineless Booster Cogburn, Medea (a parody of Daredevil's Elektra), and more! Now, all five Gerber/Kirby issues are collected. relettered and reproduced from Jack's unbridled, uninked pencil art! Also included are select examples of Alfredo Alcala's unique inking style over Kirby on the original issues, Gerber's script pages, an historical Introduction by Mark Evanier, and an Afterword by Buzz Dixon. An all-new definitive history of Connecticut's notorious all-in-one comic book company! Often disparaged as a second-rate funny-book outfit, Charlton produced a vast array of titles that span from the 1940s Golden Age to the Bronze Age of the '70s in many genres. The imprint experienced explosive bursts of creativity, most memorably the 'Action Hero Line' edited by Dick Giordano in the 1960s, which featured the renowned talents of Steve Ditko and a stellar team of creators, all helmed by veteran masters and talented newcomers-and serving as a training ground for an entire generation of comics creators. Though it gave up the ghost over three decades ago, Charlton's influence continues today with its Action Heroes serving as inspiration for Alan Moore's cross-media graphic novel hit, Watchmen.
