With TOO SOON? Friedman finally (none 'too soon,' in fact) gets his due with this fat, beautiful collection that showcases his wide-ranging skills as a portraitist and caricaturist. TOO SOON? is evenly split between political celebrities and show-business ones, ranging from Friedman's instantly iconic 'Barack Obama as George Washington' New Yorker cover to brutal depictions of Britney Spears and her tabloid-filling ilk. Subjects (or targets, depending on how you look at it) for Friedman's pen on the political side include Bill and Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, John McCain, and George W. Bush (with an iconic 'W. as Strangelove' image) and his gang. Entertainers include Tiny Tim, Barney Fife, Bob Dylan, Woody Allen, Oprah Winfrey, Barbra Streisand, Jerry Lewis, the Three Stooges, Ellen DeGeneres, and Conan O'Brien. And falling somewhere in the gray area between entertainers and political players (you make the call!) Rush Limbaugh (who blasted Friedman's George W. Bush image as being of 'low artistic quality'), Sarah Palin, and Michael Moore. The book will also include a running commentary by Friedman on the stories behind the drawings, including reactions from magazine editors, celebrities, and their fans. The cover is a stunning depiction of Michael Jackson. Too soon? Nah! (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Norman Pettingill is a true underground cartoonist, known and admired by a small coterie of cartooning connoisseurs, but completely unknown in the wider world. Norman Pettingill was an avid trapper and fisherman from Northern Wisconsin, and a self-taught artist. In 1947, at the age of 51, he created hundreds of pen-and-ink drawings and marketed many of them as postcards, printing and distributing them himself. His cartoon drawings were relatively huge and his postcards, therefore, had to be uniquely over-sized at 7' x 10'. He combined a gift for the fine detail and verisimilitude of illustration with the visual exaggeration and outrageous wit of cartooning. By merging his fascination with nature and backwoods culture with his wild sense of humor, he depicted an out-ofcontrol hillbilly wonderland of talking grizzlies, dancing morons, nightclubs, giant mosquitoes, tumble-down shacks, pipe smoking grannies, flying skunk fur, google-eyed drunks, hilarious hunting mishaps and moonshine soaked fishermen! Pettingill's world is reminiscent of Al Capp's Li'l Abner comic strip, but Pettingill's hillbilly heaven is made grittier and more tangible by his obsessive penwork and the attention he gives to each teetering outhouse, every overflowing spittoon and each wiry hair growing out of a mountain man's warty face. He reveled in exposing the commercialization of outdoor activities, debunking the romance of a woodsman's life, and demythologizing the expertise of the outdoors-man. His landscapes and drawings of wild animals could be breathtakingly wondrous, and even his most grotesque depictions of hillbillies were fused with a love and respect for the rituals of a primitive life in the boondocks. This book is the first published retrospective of Pettingill's work, containing over a hundred of the artist's best and rarely seen drawings, printed in an oversized format. (W/A) Zak Sally $7.95 / 32 pgs / PC In the long-awaited third issue of Zak Sally's surreal masterpiece in the sumptuous 'Ignatz' format, our hero finally gets a chance to sit by himself for a while. Only for about three pages, though, and then there's more disembodied voices telling him what to do -- followed by the anger, frustration, swearing and free-floating terror you've come to love and expect from this series. Where the heck is Puppy Boy? What's that shovel for? Why all the terrified eyes glassily staring off into nothingness? You may or may not find out in Sammy the Mouse #3. (immagine) Categoria: Comics

by Zak Sally 7 x 10.25, HC, 144 pages, PC, $22.99 ISBN 978-1-60699-165-7 One man's heartfelt and irreverent record of his time on this rock, Zak Sally's unflinchingly veracious book, LIKE A DOG, is both direct and oblique, which we find rather miraculous considering the messy and murky waters of human experience it manages to navigate. LIKE A DOG is among the few comic book testimonials burdened by the yen to understand and articulate the mundane and the magnificent. Don't be surprised if you find yourself laughing and crying as you claw your way through each hard fought page! (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

by Zak Sally Double Eisner nominee (for his acclaimed Recidivist #3, which SPIN Magazine also called one of its 'favorite things' in January), and all-around hot cartoonist Zak Sally leaps into Ignatz fray with the first issue of the ongoing Sammy the Mouse series! Rollick with Sammy's pals Puppy Boy, H. G. Feekes, and Him as they walk around, have epileptic seizures, talk to disembodied voices, drink liquor in a bar the shape of a giant baby, and scare the living hell out of each other. The artwork on Sammy the Mouse will be created using a sophisticated two-color process Sally already showed off to fine effect in a recent MOME, making it one of the most visually arresting of the Ignatzes. By Zak Sally In this issue, things ramp up, as Sammy still can't seem to find some peace and quiet in the comfort of his home (because a giant finger is poking him in the skull, among other things), and some new 'friend' won't take 'No' for an answer. An answer for what? Why, a PICNIC, of course. EVERYBODY loves a PICNIC, right? As if that weren't enough, Feekes keeps shooting off his drunk mouth (with dire consequences), there's more secret scary underwater business from Him, and where the hell is Puppy-boy, anyway? Also in this issue: a moustache. (immagine) Categoria: Comics

by Drew Friedman The Fun Never Stops is a comprehensive collection of premier caricaturist Drew Friedman's best comic strips, illustrations, and mug shots dealing with all the familiar Friedman themes the world has come to love: showbiz has-beens, ugly old white men, nefarious politicians, debauched celebrities, the ubiquitous Lord Of Eltingville, etc. Most of the work is from the 1990s, and show Friedman's gradual phasing out of his famous (and amazing) black-and-white 'stipple' look to his current (and equally amazing) 'lush watercolor' style. The book is topped off with a detailed, career-spanning biographical introduction by Ben Schwartz and a foreword by Daniel Clowes. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

(E) Thomas Andrae, Mel Gordon (W) Jerry Siegel (A) Joe Shuster Here is a kaleidoscopic analysis of Jewish humor as seen through Funnyman, a little-known super-heroic invention by the creators of Superman, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Following the completion of their 10-year-long contract with DC writing and drawing their first creation, Superman, Siegel and Shuster were determined to create a new superhero; one that would prove that justice, fair-play, and zany craftsmanship were the true 'American way', and would lead to their ultimate victory. This book tells the back-story of the unsuccessful strip and Siegel and Shuster's ambition to have their funny Jewish superhero trump the Man of Steel. Included are complete comic-book stories and daily and Sunday newspaper panels from this lost classic. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels
