The outrageous sci-fi parody comic series by Italian underground cartoonist Massimo Mattioli, collected in English for the very first time. On the heels of our collection of the cult classic Italian comic Squeak the Mouse, Fantagraphics is thrilled to present the outrageous comic strip series that started in the 1970s and which put the underground cartoonist Massimo Mattioli on the map. The anthropomorphic eagle Joe Galaxy is a swashbuckling space adventurer always on the make. Whether smuggling holo-videos of intergalactic porn, cheating at interstellar poker with bug-eyed monsters, or contending with the evil lizards of Calisto IV, our wisecracking hero finds himself embroiled in one absurd scenario after another. A dizzyingly boundless cartoon world chock full of parody, pop culture references, and oodles of over-the-top sex and violence, and drawn in a colorful and kinetic medley of styles, Joe Galaxy collects a nearly 25 year run of the strip and lays bare the twisted genius of its infamous creator. This luxe hardcover edition features every story in the Joe Galaxy universe, plus a bonus short penned by Mattioli in 2018, as well as a spirited intro by Coconino Press editor Oscar Glioti. An outrageously cruel cat versus a wily mouse: a rivalry as old as time, popularized by the beloved Tom and Jerry cartoons of the '40s and '50s. In the hands of renowned Italian cartoonist Massimo Mattioli, however, this classic premise is infused with a whole new perverse and anarchic energy. Laying full-on slasher horror onto wacky cartoon violence, Mattioli's characters embark on a sadistic bloodthirsty rampage, leaving a trail of mangled corpses and pools of blood in their wake. And the comic's gratuitous bloodshed is not to be overshadowed by its crude humor and over-the-top sexcapades. In sum, a tour de force of unrelenting transgression, rendered in clean line art and dazzling pastel colors. Conceived in the early '80s, Squeak the Mouse was originally serialized in the Italian underground comics magazine Frigidaire to much acclaim. This silent comic series gained notoriety in the US when customs agents seized a shipment of Mattioli's books; deemed pornographic, the work was subsequently made the subject of an obscenity trial (which was won by the publisher). Best known today as the precursor to the Itchy and Scratchy characters in The Simpsons, this cult classic comic series is finally coming back into print in a gorgeous and affordable hardcover. Collecting over 30 rare works of short fiction tinged with horror and eroticism by one of comics' most distinct voices, spanning over 20,000 years from the Stone Age to the apocalypse. Julia Gfrörer is quietly one of the most influential cartoonists of her generation. Emerging from the Portland scene at the height of the Obama era, her comics augured the dark times to come, using graphic sex, pitch-black horror, a hunger for exploring the past, and a line cruel as a whip to create her own unmistakable sense of millennial melancholy. Reflecting her DIY ethos, much of her work has only been available in self-published zines or independent anthologies, many of them rare or out-of-print - until now. World Within the World features 30 of Gfrörer's short stories, culled from a decade of writing and drawing at the bleeding edge of the art form. Her tales of desire, despair, and the universal need for connection span centuries, continents, and cultures from prehistoric teenagers in love to Christian martyrs in the making to modern-day vampires on the make. Along the way her bold, confident work leads the reader to some unexpected places, whether erotica inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe or a post-apocalyptic parody of Frasier. In World Within the World, there is no distinction between the realistic and the fantastic, the psychological and the supernatural, the modern and the medieval, the mundane and the sublime - just the artist's unflinching vision of how it feels to be human, no matter when or where. This gorgeous art book celebrates the work and legacy of Barbara Shermund, one of the first female cartoonists for humor and lifestyle magazines in the United States, including The New Yorker and Esquire. Tell Me a Story Where the Bad Girl Wins doubles as an official biography and coffee table art collection honoring the life and art of pioneering cartoonist Barbara Shermund, an unheralded early master of magazine cartooning whose career spanned the heyday of American magazines from the 1920s-1960s. Her sharp wit and loose style boldly tapped the zeitgeist of first-wave feminism with vivid characters that were alive and astute. Shermund's women spoke their minds about sex, marriage, and society; smoked cigarettes and drank; and poked fun at everything in an era when it was not common to see young women doing so. Shermund left behind a body of work that was ahead of its time and remains insightful, witty, relevant, and contemporary. As one of the first women cartoonists to work for The New Yorker the year of its launch in 1925, she created nine covers and more than 600 cartoons for the magazine, in addition to countless spot illustrations, giving the nascent publication its unique visual brand. Shermund later became a mainstay at Esquire; contributed to Life, Colliers, Judge, and more; had a syndicated newspaper cartoon published by King Features; and illustrated a variety of books. In 1950, Shermund was among the first three women to be accepted as a member of the male-dominated National Cartoonist Society. A compelling facet of Shermund's work is her frequent nods to queer audiences, which appeared in her work more than that of any of her contemporary New Yorker cartoonists. There are indications in her personal files that she also may have been queer, including love letters and other personal archives that McGurk has unearthed. Readers will discover Shermund's unique and vibrant life and art and gain an understanding of how women's place in the history of cartooning has been controlled and sublimated by greater societal and cultural allowances. Through close readings, archival research, reproductions of original art, correspondence and photographs, this volume uncovers and celebrates a trailblazing female magazine cartoonist, and rightfully places her in the canon of cartoon art history. The second issue of Mythologies & Apocrypha continues Tim Lane's exploration into the mythology of celebrity in America with 'Steve McQueen & Frank Sinatra in America,' focusing on the friendship between Frank Sinatra and Steve McQueen, and their corresponding but differing popular appeal. Lane also depicts the early life of McQueen and his life with his neglectful and alcoholic mother, presented in the style of 1930s childrens cartoons and comics, as seen through the eyes of a middle aged McQueen recalling his childhood. The complete run of the groundbreaking young adult vampire series created by Moto Hagio, a shojo/shonen-ai manga pioneer and one of the world's most influential cartoonists. The Poe Clan: a race of undead that feeds on the energy of the living, whiling away the centuries in a village of roses where time and geography have no meaning. Circumstances lead to a brother and sister, Edgar and Marybelle, being initiated into the clan too young, and therefore doomed to live out eternity forever on the brink of adulthood until a wooden stake or a silver bullet should cut them down. The Poe Clan's narrative spans the mid-1700s to the 1970s: generations of humans' lives are profoundly affected by Edgar, Marybelle, and Alan Twilight, a 14-year-old whom Edgar embraces in the 1800s. In this groundbreaking manga, Moto Hagio explores what it means to live and die, to have loved and lost. Fantagraphics is proud to present the complete 1970s run of this best-selling manga series in English for the first time. Please note: This title is a traditional work of manga and reads back to front and right to left. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

The complete three-part saga of French comics master Jacques Tardi's gripping and humane biographical portrait of his father's life as a soldier during WWII. When French tank crewman René Tardi was captured by the Germans on May 22, 1940, his life was forever changed. He is shipped off to a P.O.W. camp, Stalag IIB, where he endures a brutal day-to-day existence for nearly five years. Once the war winds down, he faces a long, grueling journey back to France, buoyed only by the vision of his wife Henriette awaiting him at home. The final act finds René struggling to adapt to civilian life, begrudgingly re-enlisting, and returning to Germany to help rebuild the country that imprisoned him. In The Complete I, René Tardi, P.O.W., cartoonist Jacques Tardi vividly renders his father's harrowing story, a story enriched with his own childhood memories. Both an homage to his father and a testament to the silent suffering of a generation of men scarred by war, Tardi's graphic novel trilogy is a personal and artistic triumph. This box set also features a slew of fascinating contextual features, including reference photographs, excerpts of René's notebooks, and several illuminating essays. The latest box set of our bestselling Crepax series is devoted to the artist's comics adaptations including Georges Bataille's Story of the Eye and the groundbreaking BDSM Story of O by Pauline Réage. Collecting more than 500 pages of the influential Italian cartoonist's most famous adaptations of the erotic literary canon in a beautiful slipcase box set. In Vol. 7, 'Story of a Story' (1981) stars Milanese photographer Valentina. Finding herself home alone, she cheekily decides to fantasize about Georges Bataille's infamous novella Story of the Eye - with a twist: she's playing all the roles! In the stories 'Emmanuelle' (1978) and 'Emmanuelle: The Anti-Virgin' (1990), Crepax follows the titular heroine on her sensual journey as the polyamorous wife of a French diplomat in Thailand. While the character is best known as the star of a series of pornographic movies, most notably the 1974 film starring Sylvia Kristel, she originated in a banned 1959 novel by Marayat Rollet-Andriane (pen name Emmanuelle Arsan), a Thai French woman. Emmanuelle has a sexual encounter on a plane, plays a steamy game of squash with a countess, falls for a woman named Bee, and has an intense experience at a temple, among the many other transgressive exploits Crepax details from the novel. And, in an innovation of Crepax's own - she crosses paths with King Kong! Vol. 8 contains Crepax's longest graphic novel - 'Story of O.' A woman finds fulfillment when she subsumes her identity by sexually submitting to a secret society. Crepax sumptuously draws every strike of the whip and taps into the sensuality of body modification in his adaptation of this groundbreaking work. Also included is his short story 'The Unexpected Exchange,' filled with the sensual delights you have come to expect from Crepax: lingerie, bisexuality, the 1920s, and the most symbolically drawn train you've ever seen outside of a Hitchcock film. In addition to the usual accompanying essays putting Crepax's stories into historical and cultural context, this volume also features Nouveau Roman novelist Alain Robbe- Grillet's (The Voyeur, Last Year at Marienbad) introduction to Story of O.
