Generations have grown up with Mary Jane, a molasses and peanut butter candy first created in 1914. Her distinctive likeness, right down to the shoes that have taken her name, conjures up halcyon memories of a bygone era. A part of the NECCO (New England Confectionery Company) family since 1990, the original Mary Jane lines have seen tremendous growth. Necco, under the Mary Jane name, has become the number one producer of Peanut Butter Kisses in the country. We are pleased to see Dark Horse named as licensing partner for the collectible vinyl figure. Working with Yoe Studio, we have brought Mary Jane to life in 3-D, which as best as we can tell is the very first three-dimensional version of this classic advertising icon. The art style of Nancy is graphic communication stripped down to the core. Iconic, minimalist, with a simple storytelling sequence that could be immediately comprehended as easily as a stop sign on the road. Although simply rendered, Nancy was able to communicate a wide range of emotions. She was especially endearing when angry, which was easy to see, since she would eject pen-and-ink droplets in every direction! Nancy's ragmuffin pal, Sluggo, was a reliable comic foil in cartoonist Ernie Bushmiller's multi-decade succession of corny jokes. Wearing raggedy, patched-up clothing and sporting a low-brow cap, the young lad lived in a broken-down house, seemingly without adult supervision. As he lazily meandered through life, young Sluggo met the challenges of a hand-to-mouth existence, as well as the annoyances of authority, with a happy-go-lucky attitude that belied his low estate. No matter what kind of trouble they got in to Nancy was always Sluggo's 'goil' and they continue to appear in newspapers today walking in step in side by side. Now both of these ndearing characters are available as 8' vinyl figures, packaged in a full-color window box, and has been 'approved' by the Bushmiller Society, the shadowy organization of aesthetic avengers dedicated to the philosophical and cultural criteria embodied in Nancy. In 1948, Al Capp introduced the Shmoo in his popular 'Li'l Abner' strip and it truly took the nation by storm. The Shmoo was a lovable tub of glub whose bewhiskered smile was a cute as his button eyes. The Shmoo bred with a speed that would put rabbits to shame, consumed essentially nothing, and provided most everything that humankind could wish for. Besides producing both milk and eggs, it's meat was pork when roasted, chicken when fried, and steak when broiled. During its heyday the Shmoo inspired one of the first true licensed-product bonanzas; appearing as a cornucopia of products that spawned as fast as the Shoos themselves.
