(W/A) Brecht Evens Rendered in vivid watercolor where parquet floors and patterned dresses morph together, Wrong Place revolves around oft-absent Robbie, a charismatic lothario of mysterious celebrity who has the run of a city as chaotic as it is resplendent. With a hand as sensitive as it is exuberant, Brecht Evens's stunning debut English graphic novel captures the strange chemistry of social interaction as easily as he portrays the fragmented nature of identity. 'I was fifteen in 1942, and I was five foot three, which is the tallest I ever was. I had jet black hair and a smile as big as day.' Readers and moviegoers have read and seen many growing-up-in-the-big-city-then-being-drafted-into-World-War-II tales, both real and fictional, but none with the visual pizzazz and feisty humor of Lucky in Love. Co-created by George L. Chieffet (script) and veteran cartoonist and animator Stephen DeStefano (plot and art), Lucky in Love is almost the flipside to dramatic works on the same theme such as Alan's War and You'll Never Know. Elegantly drawn in a supremely confident, lively, cartoony black-and-white style that recalls Milt Gross as well as classic Disney animation and comics, Lucky in Love is a unique coming-of-age story that follows its lovable eponymous hero Lucky Testatuda from his rascally teen years in Hoboken, New Jersey's Little Italy to his induction into the air force and subsequent wartime experiences. Lucky in Love shows what happens when a feisty young man merges his erotic fantasies with 1940s film myths: Moving from the '40s to present day (from which an aged, present-day Lucky looks back on his life), the book contrasts Lucky's vivid fantasy life with the darker reality of World War II (including a masterful set-piece sequence that echoes Harvey Kurtzman's classic EC war comics) as well as his first fumbling, cash-on-the-barrelhead sexual experiences. Ultimately the poignant discoveries Lucky makes on his way to adulthood bestow upon him a very different kind of heroism than that of which he had dreamed... The second and concluding volume, Lucky in Love: Lucky for Life will be released in 2013. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

The central character is a big lug and an aspiring poet who runs up tabs at the local bars by day and haunts the docks by night, writing paeans to the seafaring life. When he gets shanghaied aboard a clipper bound for Hong Kong, he finds the sailor's life a bit rougher than his romantic nautical fantasies. He helps rebuff a pirate assault, survives a gunshot to the eye, and learns to live -and love- a Conradian life on the sea, all the while writing poetry about pirates, bad food, unceremonial funerals, foreign ports, and unexpected epiphanies. By the end of his life, he's found satisfaction in living a life of adventure and finding a receptive and appreciative readership. What more could one ask for? This is Drew Weing's debut graphic novel, after honing his craft with numerous, lovingly produced self-published comic stories. Drawn in an elaborate crosshatched style that falls somewhere between Gustave Dor (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

With TOO SOON? Friedman finally (none 'too soon,' in fact) gets his due with this fat, beautiful collection that showcases his wide-ranging skills as a portraitist and caricaturist. TOO SOON? is evenly split between political celebrities and show-business ones, ranging from Friedman's instantly iconic 'Barack Obama as George Washington' New Yorker cover to brutal depictions of Britney Spears and her tabloid-filling ilk. Subjects (or targets, depending on how you look at it) for Friedman's pen on the political side include Bill and Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, John McCain, and George W. Bush (with an iconic 'W. as Strangelove' image) and his gang. Entertainers include Tiny Tim, Barney Fife, Bob Dylan, Woody Allen, Oprah Winfrey, Barbra Streisand, Jerry Lewis, the Three Stooges, Ellen DeGeneres, and Conan O'Brien. And falling somewhere in the gray area between entertainers and political players (you make the call!) Rush Limbaugh (who blasted Friedman's George W. Bush image as being of 'low artistic quality'), Sarah Palin, and Michael Moore. The book will also include a running commentary by Friedman on the stories behind the drawings, including reactions from magazine editors, celebrities, and their fans. The cover is a stunning depiction of Michael Jackson. Too soon? Nah! (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Norman Pettingill is a true underground cartoonist, known and admired by a small coterie of cartooning connoisseurs, but completely unknown in the wider world. Norman Pettingill was an avid trapper and fisherman from Northern Wisconsin, and a self-taught artist. In 1947, at the age of 51, he created hundreds of pen-and-ink drawings and marketed many of them as postcards, printing and distributing them himself. His cartoon drawings were relatively huge and his postcards, therefore, had to be uniquely over-sized at 7' x 10'. He combined a gift for the fine detail and verisimilitude of illustration with the visual exaggeration and outrageous wit of cartooning. By merging his fascination with nature and backwoods culture with his wild sense of humor, he depicted an out-ofcontrol hillbilly wonderland of talking grizzlies, dancing morons, nightclubs, giant mosquitoes, tumble-down shacks, pipe smoking grannies, flying skunk fur, google-eyed drunks, hilarious hunting mishaps and moonshine soaked fishermen! Pettingill's world is reminiscent of Al Capp's Li'l Abner comic strip, but Pettingill's hillbilly heaven is made grittier and more tangible by his obsessive penwork and the attention he gives to each teetering outhouse, every overflowing spittoon and each wiry hair growing out of a mountain man's warty face. He reveled in exposing the commercialization of outdoor activities, debunking the romance of a woodsman's life, and demythologizing the expertise of the outdoors-man. His landscapes and drawings of wild animals could be breathtakingly wondrous, and even his most grotesque depictions of hillbillies were fused with a love and respect for the rituals of a primitive life in the boondocks. This book is the first published retrospective of Pettingill's work, containing over a hundred of the artist's best and rarely seen drawings, printed in an oversized format. by Zak Sally 7 x 10.25, HC, 144 pages, PC, $22.99 ISBN 978-1-60699-165-7 One man's heartfelt and irreverent record of his time on this rock, Zak Sally's unflinchingly veracious book, LIKE A DOG, is both direct and oblique, which we find rather miraculous considering the messy and murky waters of human experience it manages to navigate. LIKE A DOG is among the few comic book testimonials burdened by the yen to understand and articulate the mundane and the magnificent. Don't be surprised if you find yourself laughing and crying as you claw your way through each hard fought page! (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

by Drew Friedman The Fun Never Stops is a comprehensive collection of premier caricaturist Drew Friedman's best comic strips, illustrations, and mug shots dealing with all the familiar Friedman themes the world has come to love: showbiz has-beens, ugly old white men, nefarious politicians, debauched celebrities, the ubiquitous Lord Of Eltingville, etc. Most of the work is from the 1990s, and show Friedman's gradual phasing out of his famous (and amazing) black-and-white 'stipple' look to his current (and equally amazing) 'lush watercolor' style. The book is topped off with a detailed, career-spanning biographical introduction by Ben Schwartz and a foreword by Daniel Clowes. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

(E) Thomas Andrae, Mel Gordon (W) Jerry Siegel (A) Joe Shuster Here is a kaleidoscopic analysis of Jewish humor as seen through Funnyman, a little-known super-heroic invention by the creators of Superman, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Following the completion of their 10-year-long contract with DC writing and drawing their first creation, Superman, Siegel and Shuster were determined to create a new superhero; one that would prove that justice, fair-play, and zany craftsmanship were the true 'American way', and would lead to their ultimate victory. This book tells the back-story of the unsuccessful strip and Siegel and Shuster's ambition to have their funny Jewish superhero trump the Man of Steel. Included are complete comic-book stories and daily and Sunday newspaper panels from this lost classic. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels
