This is a book about the comics genre and language, how these were used to create Batman, and how that character's longevity is largely due to the medium's unique formal qualities. It argues that Batman's core appeal is his mythic nature which allows him to transcend changes in reader tastes, the vicissitudes of the comics industry, and the changing media landscape. It is a study of how the formal aspects of comics are able to evoke uniquely mythic qualities that have made Batman such a long-lived cultural phenomenon. Bill Willingham's Fables imagined the lives of fairy tale figures - Snow White, the Big Bad Wolf, Cinderella and the ubiquitous Prince Charming, among many others - as they made new lives for themselves in modern-day New York City. This study, the first about the sprawling, complex series, discusses such topics as Fables' status as a contemporary adaptation of folk and fairy tales; its use of conventional genres like sword-and-sorcery, crime and romance; its portrayal of social and political relationships; and its self-referential moments. The author explores how Fables portrays redemption, the function of community, and how our hopes and fears influence our ideal of 'happily ever after.' The Kaiju (strange monster or strange beast) film genre has a number of themes that go well beyond the 'big monsters stomping on cities' motif. Since the seminal King Kong (1933) and the archetypal Godzilla (1954), kaiju has mined the subject matter of science run amok, militarism, capitalism, colonialism, consumerism and pollution. This critical examination of kaiju considers the entirety of the genre-the major franchises, along with less well known films like Kronos (1957), Monsters (2010), and Pacific Rim (2013). The author examines how kaiju has crossed cultures from its original folkloric inspirations in both the U.S. and Japan and how the genre continues to reflect national values to audiences. Bill Warren's Keep Watching the Skies! was originally published in two volumes, in 1982 and 1986. It was then greatly expanded in what we called the 21st Century Edition, with new entries on several films and revisions and expansions of the commentary on every film. In addition to a detailed plot synopsis, full cast and credit listings, and an overview of the critical reception of each film, Warren delivers richly informative assessments of the films and a wealth of insights and anecdotes about their making. Marvel Studios' approach to its Cinematic Universe, beginning with the release of Iron Man (2008), has become the template for successful management of blockbuster film properties. Yet films featuring Marvel characters can be traced back to the 1940s, when the Captain America serial first appeared on the screen. This collection of new essays is the first to explore the historical, textual and cultural context of the larger cinematic Marvel universe, including serials, animated films, television movies, non-U.S. versions of Marvel characters, films that feature characters licensed by Marvel, and the contemporary Cinematic Universe as conceived by Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios. Emma Peel wearing her 'kinky boots.' Amanda King and her poppy seed cake. Julie Barnes at her hippie pad. Honey West with her pet ocelot. Television's female spies and crimefighters make quite an impression, yet there hasn't been a reference book devoted to them until now. This encyclopedic work covers 350 female spies, private investigators, amateur sleuths, police detectives, federal agents and crime-fighting superheroes who have appeared in more than 250 series since the 1950s, with an emphasis on lead or noteworthy characters. This is the first book to comprehensively examine the multitude of non-Archie teen humor comic books, including girls and boys such as Patsy Walker, Hedy Wolfe, Buzz Baxter and Wendy Parker from Marvel; Judy Foster, Buzzy, Binky and Scribbly from DC; Candy from Quality Comics; and Hap Hazard from Ace Comics. It covers the history of the characters, who drew them, why (or why not) they succeeded as rivals for the Archie Series, highlights of both unusual and typical stories and much more. The author provides major plotlines and a history of the development of each series. Much has been written about the Archie characters, but until now very little has been told about most of their many comic book competitors. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

by Robert Michael 'Bobb' Cotter This work provides a critical overview of monster magazines from the 1950s to the 1970s. The term 'monster magazine' is a blanket term, which, for the purposes of this study is used to describe both magazines that focus primarily on popular horror movies and magazines that contain stories featuring monsters which are illustrated in comic book style but printed in black and white. by K. Dale Koontz Joss Whedon once identified himself as an 'angry, hard-line atheist' who is nevertheless 'fascinated by the concept of devotion.' While organized religion seems to hold no satisfactory answers for Whedon, his dedication to exploring the meanings of faith and belief can be seen in many of the characters he has created for such works as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, Serenity, and Fray. This work examines a variety of Whedon's characters and discusses what can be learned from their struggles and discoveries regarding religion and belief. (W) Fred Ladd The first generation of American television programmers had few choices of Saturday morning children's offerings. That changed dramatically in 1963 when a Japanese animated television series called Tetsuan Atom was acquired for distribution by NBC. Fred Ladd adapted the show for American television, and rechristened Astro Boy, it was an overnight sensation. Ladd went on to adapt numerous Japanese animated imports, and here provides an insider's view of the creation of an ongoing cultural and media phenomenon. (E) Emily Dial-Driver, Sally Emmons-Featherston Seemingly the most fantastical of television series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer proves on close examination to be firmly rooted in real-world concerns. In this collection of critical essays, 15 authors from several disciplines study ways in which Buffy illuminates viewers' real-life experiences. Topics include the series' portrayals of the relationship between soul, morality, and identity; whether Buffy can be described as a feminist icon; and the problem of power and underhanded politics in the Buffy universe. In December 1977, struggling Canadian comic book artist Dave Sim self-published the first issue of Cerebus the Aardvark, a Conan the Barbarian satire featuring a foul-tempered, sword-wielding creature trapped in a human world. Over the next 26 years, Sim, and later collaborator Gerhard, produced an epic 6,000-page graphic novel, the longest-running English language comic series by a single creative team. This in-depth work, the first collection of critical essays on Cerebus, provides a multifaceted approach to Sim and Gerhard's complex and entertaining oeuvre.
