Born in Baltimore in 1915, and dead too early in New York in 1959, Billie Holiday became a legendary jazz singer, even mythical. With her voice even now managing to touch so many people, we follow a reporter on the trail of the artist on behalf of a New York daily. Beyond the public scandals that marred the life of the star (alcohol, drugs, violence...), he seeks to restore the truth, revisiting the memory of Billie. Through this investigation, Muñoz and Sampayo trace, through the undertones of racism, and in the wake of the blues, the slow drift of a singer who expressed the deepest emotions in jazz, creating not just a biography but a spell-binding art book tribute. Stepping into Sun Studios in 1954 Elvis Aaron Presley recorded his first single 'That's All Right.' Little did he know he would soon revolutionize music and culture worldwide. This graphic novel biography starts with the story of 'The King's' humble beginnings in Mississippi, detailing, every step of the way, his meteoric rise to the stratosphere of stardom. It includes his service in the military, his extensive record as a Hollywood film star, his complicated family life, finally ending on the last days of the Hound Dog. Le Henanff's striking photo-quality painting reconstructs Elvis's life in a presentation that practically dances off the page! (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

The movie Colette, coming in September starring Keira Knightley! 'One dies only from the first man,' she wrote in 1909. But this death was a new beginning, and the one that signed 'Colette' from 1910 onward gradually opened her eyes to her condition of a woman who was an exploited writer and a betrayed wife, and who will emancipate herself by writing, and with what talent! Incredibly complex, powerfully determined, truly gifted, Colette challenged herself to reinvent her life and assert herself as a free woman. In her day, her behavior scandalized and vexed the establishment. But in the end, she helped to free women in their thinking and became member and then president of France's prestigious Académie Goncourt, among many other honors as one of France's preeminent authors. For mature readers. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

The life of the great French painter, one of the founders of Impressionism, is narrated in lush comic art reminiscent of his style. From the Salon des Refuses ('Salon of the Rejected') and many struggling years without recognition, money and yet a family to raise, all the way to great success, critically and financially, Monet pursued insistently one vision: catching the light in painting, refusing to compromise on this ethereal pursuit. It cost him dearly but he was a beacon for his contemporaries. We discover in this comics biography how he came to this vision as well as his turbulent life pursuing it. One of the folk legends of the Wild West, William H. Bonney went from cowboy and gunslinger for a rancher to pure outlawry. On the one hand, he was charming, fun-loving (often at social events like dances), and quite appealing to the ladies. Also conversant in Spanish, 'Billito' was popular with the Spanish speaking crowd. On the other hand, he had no compunction to coldly kill a man, a sheriff, a deputy - anyone who got in his way rustling cattle or horses for an illicit living. He also proved hard to keep in jail even when caught. It is probably his feats of derring-do escaping from jails that made him most famous and this is the main subject of this biography following him until he is shot in pitch darkness by lawmen obsessed with getting rid of him. When he's five years old, Albert Einstein's father offers him a compass that triggers in him an irrepressible need to understand the laws of the universe. At first a simple employee of the Swiss Patent Office in Bern, the young Einstein published in 1905 a series of scientific articles that question everything that was thought to be known in the world of physics. His theory, summed up by the formula E = mc2, opens to humanity the doors of the power of the atom. Legendary Genius, but also a great humanist, he lives through the first half of the 20th century, with all its horrors and contradictions, in the service of science, but distraught by what man's madness is capable of doing with it. This graphic novel tells the true story of Benjy Melendez, a Bronx legend, son of Puerto-Rican immigrants, who founded, at the end of the 1960s, the notorious Ghetto Brothers gang. From the ravages of his neighborhood, wracked by drugs, poverty, and violence, he managed to extract an incredibly positive energy from this riot ridden era: his multiracial gang promoted peace rather than violence. After initiating a gang truce, the Ghetto Brothers held weekly concerts on the streets or in abandoned buildings, which fostered the emergence of hip-hop. Melendez also began to reclaim his Jewish roots after learning about his family's dramatic crypto-Jewish background. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

One of the greatest writers in SF history, Philip K. Dick is mostly remembered for movies based on his works such as Blade Runner, Minority Report, and Total Recall. His dark fascinating work centered on alternate universes and shifting realities in worlds often governed by monopolistic corporations and authoritarian governments. His own life story seems a tussle with reality, going through five wives and becoming increasingly disjointed with fits of paranoia and hallucinations fueled by abuse of drugs meant to stabilize him. His dramatic story is presented unvarnished in this comics biography. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

This comics biography of one of the greatest sculptors who ever lived is done with the collaboration of the Rodin Museum and includes a preface by its director. It views his life through the eyes of the three women who shared his life for good or for bad. One was his lifelong on and off companion, the other two his muses, one of which was Camille Claudel, a well-recognized sculptor herself. Rodin's work was revolutionary in conveying exceptional passion, transcending the stone. Here's how that happened. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels
