This work, the second title in the Illustrative Storytelling Series, is from the illustrator tsukku, who is known for a Japanese-style worldview that somehow evokes a sense of nostalgia through depictions of 'the ordinary and the mysterious' that combine youth and tales of supernatural deeds. Set in the fictional rural village of Kitsunegatsuka, this is the story of Yohei, a high school student and apprentice Shinto priest who encounters non-human beings. The title 'Spirit Return' refers to the ritual of returning (in the sense of 'sending back to their rightful place' and 'purifying') gods (that is, mysterious beings) who are wandering with nowhere to go to their own realm.
