Harvey Kurtzman changed the face of American humor when he created the legendary MAD comic. As editor and chief writer from its inception in 1952, through its transformation into a slick magazine, and until he left MAD in 1956, he influenced an entire generation of cartoonists, comedians, and filmmakers. In 1962, he co-created the long-running Little Annie Fanny with his long-time artistic partner Will Elder for Playboy, which he continued to produce until his virtual retirement in 1988. Between MAD and Annie Fanny, Kurtzman's biographical summaries will note that he created and edited three other magazines, Trump, Humbug, and Help!, but, whereas his MAD and Annie Fanny are readily available in reprint form, his major satirical work in the interim period is virtually unknown. Humbug, which had poor distribution, may be the least known, but to those who treasure the rare original copies, it equals or even exceeds MAD in displaying Kurtzman's creative genius. Humbug was unique in that it was actually published by the artists who created it: Kurtzman and his cohorts from MAD Will Elder, Jack Davis, and Al Jaffee, were joined by universally acclaimed cartoonist Arnold Roth. With no publisher above them to rein them in, this little band of creators produced some of the most trenchant and engaging satire of American culture ever to appear on American newsstands. At last, the entire run of 11 issues of Humbug is being reprinted in a deluxe format, much of it reproduced from the original art, allowing even owners of the original cheaply-printed issues to see the full impact of these creators' artistry for the first time. Miss Lasko-Gross's graphic-novel debut, Escape from 'Special,' was one of the nominations for YALSA's 2008 Great Graphic Novels list. Her semiautobiographical follow-up, A Mess of Everything, picks up where Escape left off: nonconformist Melissa is now in high school. But this time, the stakes are higher for the well-intentioned Melissa as she copes with an anxiety-induced drug habit and an anorexic best friend. Even when the situation is not life-and-death, Melissa must negotiate the everyday problems that face young adults, such as alienating her friends with her uncomfortable honesty and accidentally breaking her best guy friend's heart. Eventually, her troubles cause her to nearly flunk out of school, and she finds herself back in 'special' classes. By the end of the book, Melissa faces the choice that we all do at some point: whether to pursue her dreams or settle for a safer, more secure routine. As Melissa has grown, so has Miss Lasko-Gross' craftsmanship: A Mess of Everything retains the moodiness of Escape from 'Special,' but there's a new clarity to the art and characters' expressions and body language are more nuanced. Coupled with the unsentimental truthfulness that is the hallmark of Lasko-Gross' work, this intense book has appeal for anyone who is now navigating, or whose life has ever been touched by, these issues. During the 1950s, Abe Goodman-brother of Marvel Comics' publisher Martin Goodman-was the largest buyer of cartoons in the world. Publishing out of New York City under the Humorama banner, Goodman churned out scores of cheap digest-sized magazines boasting inventive titles like Romp, Stare and Joker that featured hackneyed jokes, cheesecake photos and the publications' bread and butter, single panel pin-up cartoons.Whiles the digests were often a dumping ground for cartoonists past their prime and for unused inventory that was too risqu (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

by Bill Mauldin Here, for the first time, Fantagraphics Books brings together Bill Mauldin's complete works from 1940 through the end of the World War II. This collection of over 600 cartoons, most never before reprinted, is more than the record of a great artist - it is an essential chronicle of America's citizen-soldiers from peace through war to victory. Mauldin's brilliant send-ups of officers were pure infantry, and the men loved it. Willie & Joe will be presented in a deluxe, beautifully designed two-volume slipcased edition of over 600 pages, with an introduction and running commentary by Mauldin scholar Todd DePastino; providing context for the drawings, pertinent biographical details of Mauldin's life, and occasional background on specific cartoons - such as the ones that made General Patton howl. by George Herriman The Kat Who Walked In Beauty collects many rare and unique dailies from the 1910s and 1920s. Though many readers are aware of Herriman's dynamic Sunday pages, few know that during 1920, in what must have been an editorially unrestrictive period for Herriman, he drew some of the most graphic and brilliantly conceived daily strips ever created - they look like 'mini-Sunday' strips. This nine-month stretch of dailies, never-before-reprinted, is among the treasures included in this collection. The collection includes many other Herriman gems, including the very first stand-alone Krazy & Ignatz strips from 1911, and the illustrations from Herriman's Krazy Kat Jazz pantomime/ballet, performed to captivated New York audiences in 1922. He turns up first as Snoopy's secretary, then gradually becomes a good friend whom Snoopy helps to fly South... but it's not until June 22, 1970 that the little bird gains a name, in a perfect salute to the decade that ends with this volume: Woodstock! In other timely stories, Peppermint Patty runs afoul of her school's dress code (those sandals!), Lucy declares herself a 'New Feminist,' and Snoopy's return to the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm on a speaking engagement climaxes in a riot and a new love found amidst the teargas ('She had the softest paws...').Speaking of Snoopy, this volume falls under the sign of the Great Beagle, as three separate storylines focus on the mysterious sovereign of Beagledom. First Snoopy is summoned by a wrathful G.B. when Frieda submits a complaint about his (Snoopy's) desultory rabbit-chasing efforts; then, back in the Great one's good graces, Snoopy is sent on a secret mission; and finally he himself ascends (briefly!) to the mantle of Great Beagledom. In other news, an exasperated Lucy throws Schroeder's piano into the maw of the kite-eating tree, with gruesome results... Miss Othmar goes on strike and Linus gets involved... Charlie Brown's baseball team has an actual (brief) winning streak... Snoopy's quest to compete in the Oakland ice skating competition is thwarted by his inability to find a partner... Charlie Brown goes to a banquet to meet his hapless baseball hero Joe Shlabotnik... Snoopy is left in the Van Pelt family's care as Charlie and Sally Brown head out of town for a vacation... and (alas) the Little Red-Haired Girl moves away...
