This classic Moebius book now has extra content including 20 color pages never previously released. 'Everyone knows by now that Mars is sterile. Yet still we send at great cost robots equipped with small shovels that stubbornly dig remote arid soil in the hope of finding huddled fossils of ancient bacteria. I found it easier and less costly in terms of technology investment to get hold of a blank book and leave the pen running over the paper at random as if in a dream. Of course, this method of another age is far from providing the necessary scientific guarantees and I have not even tried to get a thesis in 'Science and Life.' Yet this book does exist and the strange creatures that inhabit its pages also exist with it and within it.' - Moebius (Contains French text in introductions and Moebius interview). Frank Bellamy is an artist whose work reflects much of the century that he inhabited. Born a year before the end of the First World War, his art documented an age of conflict, exploration, technological advancement, social change and an age which could envisage worlds as yet undiscovered as well as worlds long departed deep beneath the sands of time. His story follows the course of many of his contemporaries, a driven determination to secure a living as a illustrator, bolstered by sporadic exposure to art tuition, stints in a provincial studio 'learning on the job', and the 'pilgrimage to London' and more specifically Fleet Street, which in the 1950s was a veritable Mecca for aspiring illustrators. What makes Bellamy's story so particular is his development into a pre-eminent graphic artist creating strips such as Robin Hood, King Arthur, Heros the Spartan, Fraser of Africa, Montgomery, The Happy Warrior, Thunderbirds and Garth. From a relatively staid and unremarkable (yet highly competent) artist to a ground-breaking master of the comic strip, his rise to fame presents not just a fascinating tale about his life and work but also the story of UK comics from what was a golden age through to the influencing of the next generation of comic artists-and creatives in other fields-who would succeed him. Typical of those who fell under Bellamy's spell is Oliver Frey who graces this edition with his introduction to the work of Frank Bellamy. In the 1950s and 1960s SF comic strips were hugely popular in British weekly comics. The most popular being Dan Dare in the Eagle, Captain Condor in The Lion and Jet-Ace Logan in The Comet. Jet-Ace Logan first appeared in The Comet #426 (September 1956) with art by Geoff Campion who drew the first 3 stories. John Gillatt took over the art from issue 474 and continued honing his brilliant pen and ink artwork until the last issue of Comet in October 1959 by which time his artwork had become some of the finest and exciting comic strip art in British comics. This limited edition, with over 360 pages of exciting SF artwork, is a must for all comic strip and SF art fans. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Originally published in Thriller Picture Library issues 66, 105, 108 and 145, these four tales are rendered by four very different artists. In The Rogue's Moon Philip Mendoza splendidly captures the brutality and mendaciousness of cut-throat pirates. Reg Bunn's Captain Kidd of the Spanish Main has the feel of good, old-fashioned swashbuckling adventure, so prevalent in the movies of the 1950s. In The Sea Hawk, Robert Forrest brings the world of the Barbary pirates to fierce, vigorous life with his atmospheric and authentically-realised drawings. Vigorously drawn with a great sense of movement, The Fortunes of Captain Blood was John Millar Watt's very first adventure strip. Not content drawing all 64 pages of the comic, he also painted the cover! (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

One of the all-time greats is featured in this very special issue. John Watkiss may not be a name familiar to many readers, but within the world of film, comics and gallery art he is rightly regarded as being one of the most exceptional talents of recent times. The son of a miner, he taught himself how to draw the human form from memory aided by a battered copy of a book by George Bridgman. By the time he arrived at art college he was a better draughtsman than any of the tutors working there. He taught life drawing, sold paintings to the rich and famous and created over 300 massive paintings that inspired the Disney Tarzan movie. An incredible roller-coaster ride of massive highs and lows-accompanied by some of the most mesmerizing art you have seen-this is an issue you will not want to miss! We open this latest issue with Glenn Fabry who was one of the seminal artists from 2000AD in the UK, and then became one of favourite cover illustrators for the Vertigo line of comics in the USA. Then we remember Glen Orbik who brought back all the thrills and chills from the crime pulp covers of the 1940s into the new millennium. We take a look back at Howard Chandler Christy, creator of the Christy Girl, and then at some German children's books about children behaving badly and how they inspired some popular comic strips and animated cartoons.
