His artistic skill is recognised internationally and his work on The Three Musketeers, The Man in the Iron Mask, and The King's Musketeers (all included here) is regarded as some of the finest pen and ink work ever created for comic strips. In an era where photography and film recording were still in their infancy, much of the news was relayed through the work of reportage artists. Pre-eminent amongst such artists was Fortunino Matania who was The Sphere's artist-on-the-spot for events ranging from coronations to colliery disasters. Sent to a variety of fronts to cover the conflict, his illustrations created a gripping and, at times, life-affirming testimony to those traumatic times. For the first time ever, this book collects those images in large format so that they can be viewed as they were intended. Modesty Blaise, the tough and enigmatic character created by Peter O'Donnell, made her international debut on May 13, 1963 in a newspaper strip story illustrated by Jim Holdaway. On Jim Holdaway's sudden death in 1970 the artwork was taken up by Enric Badia Romero. In 1978 John Burns drew the strip for a year then Pat Wright for nine months. In May 1980 the fifth artist was introduced, Neville Colvin, who produced over 1500 strips. Colvin retired in 1986 and Romero continued again until the very last strip in 2001. This marvelous catalogue showcases over 160 original artworks reproduced here in the finest detail. John M. Burns was one of Britain's, if not the world's, finest continuity artists. In a career spanning over 60 years, he produced vast amounts of work for numerous British weeklies including TV Express, The Hotspur, Boys' World, Diana, Wham!, Lady Penelope, TV Action, Look-in, 2000AD and Judge Dredd Megazine as well as working for publishers in Europe and the USA. Although always in demand, John found time between his numerous long term work commitments to help John Dakin in his quest to revive the British newspaper comic strip. Unfortunately this revitalisation never happened, but over a 15 year period, both Johns created characters, strips and full color pages that, until now have barely been seen by the public.
