Frank Bellamy is an artist whose work reflects much of the century that he inhabited. Born a year before the end of the First World War, his art documented an age of conflict, exploration, technological advancement, social change and an age which could envisage worlds as yet undiscovered as well as worlds long departed deep beneath the sands of time. His story follows the course of many of his contemporaries, a driven determination to secure a living as a illustrator, bolstered by sporadic exposure to art tuition, stints in a provincial studio 'learning on the job', and the 'pilgrimage to London' and more specifically Fleet Street, which in the 1950s was a veritable Mecca for aspiring illustrators. What makes Bellamy's story so particular is his development into a pre-eminent graphic artist creating strips such as Robin Hood, King Arthur, Heros the Spartan, Fraser of Africa, Montgomery, The Happy Warrior, Thunderbirds and Garth. From a relatively staid and unremarkable (yet highly competent) artist to a ground-breaking master of the comic strip, his rise to fame presents not just a fascinating tale about his life and work but also the story of UK comics from what was a golden age through to the influencing of the next generation of comic artists-and creatives in other fields-who would succeed him. Typical of those who fell under Bellamy's spell is Oliver Frey who graces this edition with his introduction to the work of Frank Bellamy. Working in a style dear to him and heavy with uncompromising improvisation, this sketchbook weaves between casual and intense graphic styles and was drawn by Moebius between 1997 and 2009. The protagonist of this pseudo-historical story, Major Grubert, evolves both philosophically and humouristically in a context echoing the brilliant 'Inside Moebius' series. Taking another journey through the fabulous web like world of the Airtight Garage, several guest appearances are slipped between the pages of this book, including the likes of Lorenzo Mattotti, François Avril, André Juillard, William Vance, Sylvio Cadelo, as well as Isabelle Giraud and their children, Raphaël and Nausicaä. This is the very first time these stories have been reprinted since first appearing in 1960s. Regarded by comic aficionados as the finest western strip ever published, Wes Slade: Deputy US Marshal ran from 1961 until 1981. Written by James Edgar, perhaps the best writer of western strips, and drawn by George Stokes as a labor of love, the artwork is very special. Here we present 10 complete stories all scanned from the original artwork which still survives in the Express Newspaper Archives. George Stokes was born in 1934, the son of a British officer serving in the Indian Army. Travel in Canada and the USA deepened his interest in West and in 1960 he jumped at the opportunity to draw a newly created western strip for the Sunday Express, Wes Slade. He drew Wes Slade weekly for the next 20 years until his untimely death aged 47 in 1981. We are very pleased to offer this incredible collection of Western stories and artwork in the very finest reproduction from the original artwork. (immagine) Categoria: Magazines

In the 1950s Western comic strips dominated British comics and one of the finest were the Buffalo Bill Cody, Chief of the Scouts to General Custer's 7th Cavalry at Fort Abraham Lincoln in Dakota Territory, which featured in The Comet from 1953 to 1959. Here we present some of the finest pen and ink work by Jesus Blasco from 1954 and 1955. Unusually for that time the Indian adversaries were conveyed with understanding and admiration. Quaco was just a boy when he was ruthlessly kidnapped by human traffickers around 1770 and sold to the captain of a slave ship. Quaco managed to survive the harrowing ocean crossing, and eventually landed in Paramaribo (Suriname) on the estate of the wealthy plantation owner and administrator Walter Kennedy. Quaco was one of the millions of Africans who fell victim to the trans-Atlantic slave trade. His life story is partly based on John Gabriel Stedman's illustrated memoires of his time as an army captain in Suriname. Originally published in Dutch this English translation is the work of the students of Sheffield University with their help and support. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels
