The Library of American Comics and Clover Press are proud to publish Terry and the Pirates: The Master Collection. Reproduced from Milton Caniff's personal set of color syndicate tabloid proofs that were unavailable for previous books, this series is the ultimate edition of Caniff's masterpiece. We present the Sundays in an unmatched color fidelity and larger than they have ever before been reprinted -- an unparalleled upgrade that no Terry fan can afford to pass up. The complete strip will be collected in twelve deluxe 11' x 14' hardcover volumes, with a complementary thirteenth volume by Dean Mullaney and Bruce Canwell that tells the behind-the-scenes story of the strip. Terry and the Pirates debuted in October 1934. For the next twelve years, Caniff would weave a spell of exotic adventure, sex appeal, and humor. The cartoonist set the strip in exotic China, where historic events occurring in the region during the 1930s provided the raw material from which he blended fantasy and reality to create an extraordinary graphic narrative. The series introduces young Terry Lee, his adult pal Pat Ryan, their sidekick Connie, as well as an array of unforgettable brigands such as Captains Judas and Blaze, and the two toughest women to ever sail on the China Seas: the alluring Burma and the inimitable Dragon Lady. No cartoonist has so heavily influenced his medium as has Milton Caniff, and no comic strip has had more imitators than Terry and the Pirates. Terry and the Pirates was read by 31 million newspaper subscribers between 1934 and 1946. Vol. 1 collects all dailies and Sundays from the strip's beginning on October 22, 1934 through the end of 1935 in a deluxe 192 pp, 11' x 14', hardcover. 'In the first few years of Terry and the Pirates, Milton Caniff invented the visual and textual language that defines the very vocabulary of all adventure and character-based comic art…. It is the greatest adventure comic strip ever done-a genuine masterpiece of its art form.' - Howard V. Chaykin (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Faceless foes bookend the stories in Dick Tracy Volume 4, the latest entry in the Clover Press/Library of American Comics reissue of the original six Dick Tracy volumes in the larger format that became the series standard. The intrepid detective and his friends tackle invisible enemies when they square off against the notorious Purple Cross Gang and their masked leader. Later, Tracy and Pat Patton come to grips - and blows! - with The Blank, whose look predates The Question, whose name predates The Shining, and whose unmasked face harkens back to Lon Chaney as Quasimodo! Sandwiched between those two tales, Tracy is caught in a web of intrigue along with three amoral young girls, millionaire wastrel Johnny Mintworth and his mother, plus the powerful mobs fronted by 'Collie' Vinsso and Danny Supeena. Shakespeare died over 400 and no story captures the mysticism and brutality of Scottish history quite like 'Macbeth'. This graphic novel aims to tell the darkest version yet of this tale of witchcraft, murder, manipulation and unbridled ambition... When we first meet Macbeth he is a hero, he has fought valiantly for his country and saved Scotland from invasion by land and sea. But a mysterious encounter with three witches, who claim to see his future on the throne, spurs his interest in being king. This sets in motion a spiral of evil as Macbeth pushes destiny and descends ever deeper into the abyss. Basing his drawings on Prague Shakespeare Company's adaptation of Shakespeare's masterpiece Scottish artist Stewart Kenneth Moore has 'done double' by documenting a stage performance in Prague by illustrating it against the starkest memories, places and myths of his homeland. Based on an adapted version of the play, the pacing of the panels and scene setting serves to clarify aspects of the play that can be hard to understand on the stage. Shakespeare loosely based Macbeth on actual events. The witchcraft in this story is almost certainly based on 'Newes from Scotland' a London pamphlet on the Berwick Witch trials. Extracts from this pamphlet are included in this book for comparison. It is the opinion of the artist that 'Newes from Scotland' and Macbeth, to a degree, share the same political subtext, only in Shakepeare's case it comes with a dose of subtle irony. Volume 2 of this landmark series-reproduced from Milton Caniff's personal set of color syndicate tabloid proofs-features the iconic 1936 daily and Sunday adventures, which continue their separate paths until the end of August when the stories-and cast of characters-are happily united once and for all. In the Sunday Saga, Pat and Cap'n Blaze have it out across a checker board! Then things get really hot when the Dragon Lady and her men lay siege to Blaze's encampment! A twist of fate puts Pat in charge of the Dragon Lady's forces, but they're mistaken for soldier-of-fortune pirates when the Chinese Army storms their position. It takes timely intervention from a surprising source to gain their freedom. Meanwhile, in the Daily Saga, fists fly when Terry, Connie, and Pat are taken prisoner by the insidious Captain Judas-and sparks fly when the boys have their first meeting with beautiful, blonde Burma! The famous strips from March 16-21 steamed up the national audience and became one of the most imitated sequences in comic strip history. Later, cat claws are unsheathed against the backdrop of plague on the planation run by Stan and Wendy Wingate, Burma takes a dive, and with the daily and Sunday strips integrated into a unified storyline the boys once again confront the Dragon Lady before running afoul (accent on the foul!) of Papa Pyzon. The Library of American Comics and Clover Press are proud to publish Terry and the Pirates: The Master Collection, the ultimate edition of Caniff's masterpiece. In the 1950s there was the Cold War and Red Scare! These fears motivated civic organizations and major comic book companies to team up and create beautifully drawn comic books with clever stories to be passed out in the streets, in union halls, in factories, at state fairs, in schools, in churches--wherever people gathered. There were titles like 'The Man Who Stole Your Vote' (with an evil masked super villain), 'If Your Children Could Vote' (with a brave, brash Greta Thurnberg-of-the-time berating the adults), and 'Your Vote is Vital' (powerfully illustrated by Lee Elias!). The 1960s Civil Rights-era had the NAACP behind a historically important, engaging comic book 'The Street Where You Live' to motivatee blacks to get to the polls (drawn by pioneering black artist Tom Feelings). There is historical evidence that this is an unknown Marvel comic! These comic books warned citizens to be on the alert for political corruption and get out and vote to stop it! These lost and priceless comic books are beautifully restored and reprinted in full in this fascinating edition. Multiple-Eisner Award winner Craig Yoe provides a revealing introduction profusely illustrated with photos and rare cartoons. Vote to put sane, progressive people and policies in our government! This astonishingly relevant book will entertainingly show you why and how! As the caped crusader might say, 'Order now, citizen!' (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

While most Americans were watching Leave it to Beaver and listening to The Everly Brothers, an eclectic group of CIA operatives were spiking each other's coffees with LSD, throwing decadent parties and hiring prostitutes to slip unsuspecting johns drug-laced drinks in order to observe every stoned and kinky moment from behind two-way mirrors. And this was only when they weren't dreaming up the next far reaching 'official' application for this new, all-powerful, mind-blowing drug - a drug that would ironically fuel the counter-culture over a decade later. Coincidence? Maybe not. Based on actual events, Project MK-ULTRA is a zany, pop-culture laced Alice in Wonderland ride exploring the history of LSD through the eyes of a young, hungry journalist whose life is turned upside down when he's sucked into the absurdity of the CIA's most guarded top-secret Mind Control Project. Picking up from Volume One's cliff-hanger ending, Volume Two catapults readers into the darkest reaches of this twisted tale as it psychedelically spirals towards a jaw-dropping conclusion - one which will undoubtedly leave readers re-thinking everything they thought they knew about the counterculture of the 1960s and 1970s.
