When COVID-19 hit Montreal, cartoonist Rick Trembles started The Weakly Dispatch, a series of diary comics offering his personal perspective on pandemic life. Trembles' asthma put him at risk of a serious infection so, like many others, he took careful measures to avoid coming into contact with the virus. He self-isolated for months, surviving on grocery deliveries from friends, DIY workouts (to prevent muscle atrophy), and of course, comics. Leaving the apartment, however, turned out to be even harder than staying isolated. Initially foiled by stair-painters and coughing neighbors, Trembles quickly discovered a newly perilous world, populated by unmasked people and handshake enthusiasts. This debut graphic novel tells the story of the 2015 European 'migrant crisis' in Budapest, Hungary through the perspective of Langosh and Peppi, a vagabond and his faithful dog. Based on Post's own experiences, Langosh and Peppi escape the pressures of conformity by exploring out-of-the-way places, where they stumble on the vestiges of the war torn region's hidden past. However, Langosh and Peppi discover the stark difference between choosing a transient lifestyle, and being forced from one's home and country. We meet people whose tragic personal struggles are enmeshed with the national struggles that continue to divide and destroy so many lives, see families torn apart due to ignorance and fear, and witness the disturbing global rise of nationalism. A graphic memoir lamenting the loss of train travel, the grip of family, mortality, art, and the human condition, with many other digressions thrown in for good measure. Collier's dream is to travel with his wife and son across the country by rail, before it is too late. Through the passing landscape he introduces his family (and the reader) to his old way of life and tries to track down the many characters with whom he has lost touch. When Lester LaFleur's relationship is upended by a breakup with his girlfriend, he decides to leave the city for good. With his guitar on his back and cowboy boots on his feet, Lester heads west across Canada, playing his hurtin' songs in empty taverns and to anyone who cares to listen. As Lester travels across the country, he meets others who appreciate his music and share his experiences-and develops a deep kinship with his fellow drifters. As they ride together toward their unknown fortunes, adventures ensue. Cartoonist Lorenz Peters uses gentle humour and expressive lines to explore the lifestyle of a travelling musician-and discovers that sometimes, home is the open road and family is the people you meet along the way. This volume collects three years of Dakota McFadzean's daily webcomic, nominated for the Slate Cartoonist Prize and a Shuster Award. Though it began as a diary comic, the strip gradually morphed into its current state: a gnashing, howling little world of cursing children, mutilated faces, worried monsters, and adorable small animals. These figures amble between absurd comedy and that dark, empty feeling of cosmic insignificance that keeps you up at night. Before the beekeeper arrived, the Crimson Quays was just a well-appointed tourist trap: a luxury travel resort replete with swimming pools, musical performances, and amusement park rides. However, the resort's crowning glory-the very feature that drew the beekeeper to the island in the first place-was the zoo. Although the beekeeper, a biologist by trade, was tasked with the construction of the zoo, he was rarely spotted at resort events. Instead, he spent his evenings chasing other zoological pursuits-specifically, he was attempting to crossbreed a new species of wolf that would thrive in the resort's arid climate. The beekeeper's odd behavior went mostly unnoticed... until the night the animals got out. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels Annullato/esaurito (Cancelled by Publisher)

Powered by an expressive black and white drawing style, reminiscent of Robert Crumb and the meticulous pointillist technique of Drew Friedman, the dark undertone of Nina Bunjevac's humor brings into light the range of socio-political issues her comics deal with, such as gender, nationalism or urban alienation, always from an ironic feminist perspective. Her chain-smoking, slightly alcoholic and manically depressed character Zorka may just be today's ultimate antiheroine. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Growing up in Haines Junction, YT, artist Cole Pauls performed in a traditional song and dance group called the Dakwäkãda Dancers. During that time, Pauls encountered the ancestral language of Southern Tutchone. Driven by a desire to help revitalize the language, he created Dakwäkãda Warriors, a bilingual comic about two earth protectors saving the world from evil pioneers and cyborg sasquatches. Pauls' Elders supported him throughout the creation process by offering consultation and translation. The resulting work is a whimsical young adult graphic novel that offers an accessible allegory of colonialism. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

(W/A) David Collier Since publishing his first story in R. Crumb's Weirdo magazine, David Collier has been known for his thoughtful comic essays. Chimo is an account of Collier's decision to re-enlist in the Canadian army and go through basic training again at age 40, leaving his new family behind. He intends to get to Afghanistan and follow in the footsteps of artists who produced a body of work while serving in the Canadian War Artists Program. It is a poignant account of aging and mortality but, in true Collier fashion, digresses into scenes of jumping rope and the story of his childhood hero, skier 'Jackrabbit' Johannsen. He becomes obsessed with alien-abduction chat rooms and as he becomes more heavily immersed in his inner world, their relationship slowly disintegrates. All he wants is for her to believe him. But how can she believe him, when it's just science fiction after all? (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Schoolyard scuffles. Seedy matinees. Run-ins with inept riot cops. Representation Immobilized is an unflinching look through the smudged lenses of Rick Trembles' glasses at his early years in Montreal. After a midnight move from a crumbling apartment Trembles gradually started bringing all his childhood belongings back, bit by bit, which started triggering memories from his past. Worried about them fading from memory as time wore on, he took the opportunity to document them before they could vanish. One of his last entries in this series questioned the nature of selective memory, why certain inanities from one's past might resonate more than others/ (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels
