Now in paperback with a new cover, Goliath is a retelling of the classic myth, this time from Goliath's point of view. Since its original 2011 release, Tom Gauld has solidified himself as one of the most critically-acclaimed cartoonists working today, from his strips in the Guardian and New Scientist, to his lauded graphic novels You're All Just Jealous of My Jetpack and Mooncop. Simultaneously tragic and bleakly funny, Goliath displays a sensitive wit and a bold line-a traditional narrative reworked, remade, and revolutionized into a classic tale of Gauld's very own. It's the early 2000s. Lauren is fifteen, soft-spoken, and ashamed of her body. When her bible-thumping parents forbid Lauren to bring evolution textbooks home, she opts to study at her schoolmate Mariah's house. That evening Mariah gives Lauren a makeover and they have what becomes Lauren's first queer encounter. Jessica Campbell uses frankness and dark humour to articulate Lauren's burgeoning crisis of faith and sexuality. Rave is a coming of age story about the secret spaces young women create and the wider social structures that fail them. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Peter Bagge's biography of Zora Neale Hurston is bold and dazzling, a story as brilliant as the life itself. Hurston challenged the norms of what was expected of an African American woman in early 20th century society. She arrived in NYC at the height of the Harlem Renaissance, surrounded by peers such as Langston Hughes and Wallace Thurman. Hurston went on to become a noted folklorist and critically acclaimed novelist, including her most provocative work Their Eyes Were Watching God. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Yoshiharu Tsuge leaves early genre trappings behind, taking a light, humorous approach in these stories based on his own travels. Red Flowers ranges from deep character studies to personal reflections to ensemble comedies set in the hotels and bathhouses of rural Japan. These vital comics inspired a wealth of fictionalized memoir from Tsuge's peers and a desire within the postwar generation to document and understand the diversity of Japan's cultures. With deft insight, Secret Life observes the sinister individualism of bureaucratic settings in contrast with an unconcerned natural world. As the narrative progresses you may begin to suspect that the world Ellsworth has brought to life with hypnotic visuals is not so secret after all; in fact, it's uncannily similar to our own. In his inimitable style, British cartoonist Tom Gauld has opened comics to a crossover audience and challenged perceptions of what the medium can be. Simultaneously silly and serious, Gauld adds an undeniable lightness to traditionally highbrow themes. From sarcastic panels about the health hazards of being a best-selling writer to a list of magical items for fantasy writers (such as the Amulet of Attraction, which summons mainstream acceptance, Hollywood money, and fresh coffee), Gauld's cartoons are timely and droll - his trademark British humor, impeccable timing, and distinctive visual style sets him apart from the rest. Jinchalo is Korean for 'Really?' and that question is at the heart of this book. A companion to Ojingogo, Jinchalo stars the same little girl as its heroine. When the mischevious shapeshifter Jinchalo hatches from a mysterious egg, he starts our heroine adventuring anew. Magical troubles drag the pair out of the safety of her home. These comics are firmly rooted in Korean folktakes and stylistic conventions, with a playful, joyous line to create a Miyazaki-tinged dreamscape where spotted octopi fly and bears give piggyback rides. (W/A) John Stanley (D)esigned by Seth In John Stanley's version of the beloved Brillo-headed character, Nancy is no longer a crabby cipher but a hilarious, brilliant, scheming, duplicitous, honest, and loyal little kid - a real little kid. Her adventures with her best friend, the comically destitute Sluggo, involve moneymaking schemes to afford ice-cream sodas, botched trips to the corner store for Nancy's Aunt Fritzi, and comically raucous attempts to remove loose teeth. Lulu Moppet is an outspoken and brazen young girl who doesn't follow any rules-whether they've been set by her parents, the neighborhood boys, or society itself. 2019 D+Q begins a landmark reissue series of Lulu's suburban hijinks: she goes on picnics, babysits, and attempts to break into the boys' clubhouse again and again. Cartoonist John Stanley's expert timing and constant gags made these stories unbelievably enjoyable, ensuring that Marge's Little Lulu was a defining comic of the post-war period. Lulu's assertiveness, individuality, and creativity is empowering to witness; the series is powerfully feminist despite the decades in which the stories were created. Hark! A Vagrant is an uproarious romp through history and literature seen through the sharp, contemporary lens of New Yorker cartoonist and comics-sensation Kate Beaton. No era nor tome is left unscathed as Beaton rightly skewers the Western World's revolutionaries, leaders, sycophants, and suffragists while equally honing her wit on the hapless heroes, heroines, and villains of the best-loved fiction. In just four years, Beaton has taken the comics world by storm with her non sequiturs, cheeky comebacks, and irreverent punch lines. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

A manga icon’s most perplexing, transgressive, and astounding work of horror and surrealism By the mid-1970s, Tsuge Yoshiharu was a man changed by circumstance—something his work from 1975 to 1981 boldly reveals. The confusion and mental illness simmering beneath the surface of his more surreal works come to a rolling boil, reaching an unsettling and horrific crescendo in a series of nightmarish delusions. He Rolled Me Up Like A Grilled Squid captures a mid-career author taking stock of his anxieties and suspicions while connecting the dots between his seemingly monotonous present and his complicated past. (W/A) Anders Nilsen A haunting postmodern fable, Big Questions is the magnum opus of Anders Nilsen, one of the brightest and most talented young cartoonists working today. This beautiful minimalist story, collected here for the first time, is the culmination of ten years and more than six hundred pages of work that details the metaphysical quandaries of the occupants of an endless plain, existing somewhere between a dream and a Russian steppe. A downed plane is thought to be a bird and the unexploded bomb that came from it is mistaken for a giant egg by the group of birds whose lives the story follows. The indifferent, stranded pilot is of great interest to the birds - some doggedly seek his approval, while others do quite the opposite, leading to tensions in the group. Nilsen seamlessly moves from humor to heartbreak. His distinctive, detailed line work is paired with plentiful white space and large, often frameless panels, conveying an ineffable sense of vulnerability and openness. Big Questions has roots in classic fables - the birds and snakes have more to say than their human counterparts, and there are hints of the hero's journey, but here the easy moral that closes most fables is left open and ambiguous. Rather than lending its world meaning, Nilsen's parable lets the questions wander where they will. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

For twenty years, Jason Lutes toiled on this intimate, sweeping epic before the collected Berlin was published in 2018 to widespread acclaim. Lutes's historical fiction about the decline of the Weimar Republic and the rise of fascism is seen through the eyes of the Jews and the Nazis; the socialists and the socialites; the lavishly decorated queer clubs and the crumbling tenement apartments. Lutes weaves these characters' lives into the larger fabric of a city slowly ripping apart, crafting a polyphonic novel that is rich in its historical detail and as timely as ever in its depiction of a society slowly awakening to the stranglehold of fascism. Kokopo, 1943. A platoon of soldiers is ordered into battle. The objective is death. The alternative is certain execution as a consequence of survival. Inspired by Eisner Award-winning author Shigeru Mizuki's own mandatory tour of duty as an active combatant in the Imperial Japanese Army, Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths portrays a flailing infantry unit on its last legs near the end of the Second World War.
