Hannah is a thirty-something wife, home-health worker, and antiwar activist. Her husband, Johnny, is a stay-at-home pothead working - or 'working' - on building them a house before the winter chill sets in. They're currently living and screwing in the back of a truck, hoping for a pregnancy, which seems like it will never come. Told with tenderness and care in an undefined near future, Eleanor Davis's The Hard Tomorrow blazes unrestrained, as moments of human connection are doused in fear and threats. (W/A) Chris Ware A PREVIEWS Exclusive! This print portfolio, somewhat hedgingly entitled The ACME Novelty Library 18.5, contains all four 'Thanksgiving' covers drawn by cartoonist and cultural commentator F. C. Ware for the November 27th, 2006 issue of The New Yorker, as well as the additional fifth comic strip which heretofore only appeared in digital form, all carefully printed in full color at an oversized 15' x 20' size on heavy paper and folded in half for easy recycling. As if this wasn't dreary enough, included is a new supplementary folded comic strip, measuring 16' x 11,' which is also folded in half. Presented as the 'Lower East Side' version of the even more ridiculously priced signed 'Upper East Side' portfolio (which is, however, not folded in half) the consumer is asked to carefully weigh whether purchase of this object is truly necessary, and to act accordingly. From a child's-eye view, Travis Dandro recounts growing up with a drug-addicted birth father, alcoholic step-dad, and overwhelmed mother. As a kid, Dandro would temper the tension of his every day with flights of fancy, finding refuge in toys and animals and insects rather than the unpredictable adults around him. Dandro perceptively details the effects of poverty and addiction on a family while maintaining a child's innocence for as long as he can. King of King Court spans from Travis's early childhood through his teen years, focusing not only on the obviously abusive actions, but also on the daily slights and snubs that further strain relations between him and his parents. Alongside Dandro's birth father committing crimes and shooting up, King of King Court lingers on scenes of him criticizing Travis and his siblings. Dandro gives equal heft to these anecdotes, emphasizing how damaging even relatively slight traumas can be to a child's worldview. As Travis matures into young adulthood and begins to understand the forces shaping his father's toxic behaviours, the story becomes even more nuanced. Travis is empathetic to his father's own tragic history, but unable to escape the cycle of misconduct and reprisals they are caught in. King of King Court is a revelatory autobiography that examines trauma, addiction, and familial relations in a unique and sensitive way. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Big Kids follows a troubled teenage boy through the transformative years of high school, as he redefines his friends, his interests, and his life path. When the boy's uncle, a police officer, gets kicked out of the family's basement apartment and transferred to the countryside, April moves in. She's a college student: mysterious and cool, she quickly takes a shine to the boy. Eerie and perfectly paced, Michael DeForge's Big Kids muses on the complicated, and often contradictory, feelings people struggle with in adolescence, the choices we make to fit in, and the ways we survive times of change. R. Sikoryak is famous for taking classic comics and mashing them with famous literature as he did in Masterpiece Comics. In these uncertain times, cartoonist R. Sikoryak draws upon the power of comics and satire to frame President Trump and his controversial declarations as the words and actions of the most notable villains and antagonists in comic book history. Reimagining the most famous comic covers, Sikoryak transforms Wonder Woman into Nasty Woman; Tubby Tompkins into Trump; Black Panther into the Black Voter; the Fantastic Four into the Hombres Fantasticos and Trump into Magneto fighting the Ex-Men. In perfect Trumpian fashion, The Unquotable Trump is a 48-page treasury annual, needlessly oversized and garishly colored; a throw-back to the past when both Comics and America were Great. What happens when a childhood hobby grows into a lifelong career? The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Cartoonist, Adrian Tomine's funniest and most revealing foray into autobiography, offers an array of unexpected answers. When a sudden medical incident lands Tomine in the emergency room, he begins to question if it was really all worthwhile: despite the accolades and opportunities of a seemingly charmed career, it's the gaffes, humiliations, slights, and insults he's experienced (or caused) within the industry that loom largest in his memory. While Tomine mines his conflicted relationship with comics and comics culture, a richer emotional story emerges as his memories are delineated in excruciatingly hilarious detail. In the late 1980s, the idiosyncratic Chester Brown (author of the much-lauded Paying for It and Louis Riel) began writing the cult classic comic book series Yummy Fur. Within its pages, he serialized the groundbreaking Ed the Happy Clown, revealing a macabre universe of parallel dimensions. Ed the Happy Clown is a hallucinatory tale that functions simultaneously as a dark roller-coaster ride of criminal activity and a scathing condemnation of religious and political charlatanism. (W/A) Imiri Sakabashira Enter the strange world of Imiri Sakabashira. The Box Man follows its zoomorphic protagonists along a scooter trip through a landscape that oscillates between a dense city, a countryside simplified to near abstraction, and hybrids of the two. Sakabashira weaves this absurdist tale in a seamless tapestry constructed of elements as seemingly disparate as Japanese folklore, pop culture, and surrealism. Celebrated cartoonist Seth gives us the fictional life of George Sprott. On the surface George seems a charming, foolish, old man, but who is he? And who was he? Told as a patchwork tale, we come to know George, piece by piece, in a series of 'interviews,' flashbacks, and personal reminiscences. George Sprott is a story about time, identity, loss, and the persistence of memory. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

What if Osamu Tezuka's beloved hero Astro Boy was a young robot with endless enthusiasm who lived with a bumbling sad-sack robot friend, a self-centered wise-cracking cat, and a well-meaning but forgetful inventor? Why, then he'd be Reggie-12! Reggie-12 is classic Japanese adventure manga cartooning reworked in Brian Ralph's trademark style and told with the episodic wit and structure of the contemporary American sitcom. Laughs explode from the page (and the reader's belly) as mishap follows caper follows disaster. Come along for a wild ride with Reggie-12, Casper, and Professor Tinkerton as they eat pizza, play video games, and get dissed by bad guys. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Tove Jansson's Moomin stories made her one of the most beloved Scandinavian authors of the 20th-century. Drawn & Quarterly celebrates the centenary of Jansson's birth with Moomin: The Deluxe Anniversary Edition, a slipcased, hardcover collection of the complete Tove Jansson-penned Moomin comic strip, replete with all of her most popular storylines and original pencil sketches. (W/A) James Sturm Focusing on less sensational times in U.S. history (non-war and pre-Depression), James Sturm's America draws a portrait of the people and their dreams that make up this country. Comprised of three chapters - The Revival, Hundreds of Feet Below Daylight, and The Golem's Mighty Swing - the stories grow as the country grows: from pioneers searching for a place to call home to ghost towns gutted by greed and racism to the distractions and fantasies of baseball. While trying to understand his ennui, Seth discovers the life and work of Kalo, a forgotten New Yorker cartoonist from the 1940s. But his obsession blinds him to the needs of his lover and the quiet desperation of his family. Wry self-reflection and moody colors characterize this tale about learning lessons from nostalgia. His playful and sophisticated experiment with memoir provoked a furious debate among cartoon historians and archivists about the existence of Kalo, and prompted a Details feature about Seth's 'hoax.'
