(W/A) James Sturm James Sturm's America draws a portrait of the people and their dreams that make up this country. Comprised of three chapters - 'The Revival,' 'Hundreds of Feet Below Daylight,' and 'The Golem's Mighty Swing' - the stories grow as the country grows: from pioneers searching for a place to call home to ghost towns gutted by greed and racism to the fantasies of baseball. In the middle of the night in 1997, Doctors Without Borders administrator Christophe André was kidnapped by armed men and taken away to an unknown destination in the Caucasus region. For three months, André was kept handcuffed in solitary confinement, with little to survive on and almost no contact with the outside world. Close to twenty years later, award-winning cartoonist Guy Delisle (Pyongyang, Jerusalem, Shenzhen, Burma Chronicles) recounts André's harrowing experience in Hostage, a book that attests to the power of one man's determination in the face of a hopeless situation. Marking a departure from the author's celebrated first-person travelogues, Delisle tells the story through the perspective of the titular captive, who strives to keep his mind alert as desperation starts to set in. Working in a pared down style with muted colour washes, Delisle conveys the psychological effects of solitary confinement, compelling us to ask ourselves some difficult questions regarding the repercussions of negotiating with kidnappers and what it really means to be free. Thoughtful, intense, and moving, Hostage takes a profound look at what drives our will to survive in the darkest of moments. Hostage has been translated from the French by Helge Dascher. Dascher has been translating graphic novels from French and German to English for over twenty years. A contributor to Drawn & Quarterly since the early days, her translations include acclaimed titles such as the Aya series by Marguerite Abouet and Clément Oubrerie, Pyongyang by Guy Delisle, and Beautiful Darkness by Fabien Vehlmann and Kerascoët. With a background in art history and history, she also translates books and exhibitions for museums in North America and Europe. She lives in Montreal. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

by Guy Delisle Famously referred to as one of the 'Axis of Evil' countries, North Korea remains one of the most secretive and mysterious nations in the world today. In early 2001 cartoonist Guy Delisle became one of the few Westerners to be allowed access to the fortresslike country. While living in the nation's capital for two months on a work visa for a French film animation company, Delisle observed what he was allowed to see of the culture and lives of the few North Koreans he encountered; his findings form the basis of this remarkable graphic novel. Tom Gauld (Mooncop, You're All Just Jealous of My Jetpack, Goliath) has created countless iconic strips for the Guardian over the course of his illustrious career. A master of condensing grand, highbrow themes into one-to-eight panel comics, Gauld's weekly Guardian strips embody his trademark British humor, while simultaneously opening comics to an audience unfamiliar with the artistry that cartooning has to offer. Funny but serious, the Guardian comics allow Gauld to put his impressive knowledge of history, literature, and pop culture on full display, his impeccable timing, and distinctive visual style setting him apart from the rest. (W/A) John Stanley (D)esigned by Seth Thirteen Going on Eighteen is a massive 336 page hardcover collecting one of the seminal 'teen' comics of the 1960s. Each comic is a darkly hilarious look at the social maneuverings and betrayals of the teen set. John Stanley's stripped down approach perfectly captures the fever pitch of the time. He creates what would otherwise be a teenage sit-com and turns it into an anguished character study. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Guy Delisle expertly lays the groundwork for a cultural road map of contemporary Jerusalem, utilizing the classic stranger in a strange land point of view that made his other books required reading for understanding what daily life is like in cities few are able to travel to. In Jerusalem: Chronicles from the Holy City, Delisle explores the complexities of a city that represents so much to so many. When observing the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim populations that call Jerusalem home, Delisle's drawn line is both sensitive and fair, assuming nothing and drawing everything. The bodies of citizens and the infrastructure surrounding them is constantly updating. People wake up in apartments of completely different sizes and shapes and commuter routes radically differ day to day. There is no way to resist-the updates are enacted by a nameless, faceless force. The signatures of DeForge's work-a vibrant color palette, surreal designs, and self-aware sense of humor-enliven an often-bleak technocratic future. Familiar Face is a masterful and deeply funny exploration of how we define our sense of self, and how we cope when so much of life is out of our control. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Ichiro and Sachiko are young artists, temperamental and discouraged about what life has to offer them. They fall in and out of love, jealous of each other's interests and unchallenged by their careers. A cornerstone of the Japanese underground scene of the 1960s, Red Colored Elegy charts their heartache, passions, and bickering with equal tenderness, creating a revelatory portrait of a stormy love affair. This paperback edition features an essay on Hayashi's contributions to contemporary Japanese comics. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

In The River at Night, Kevin Huizenga, author of the acclaimed series Ganges, delves deep into consciousness. What begins as a simple, distracted conversation between husband and wife becomes an exploration of being and the passage of time. It flashes back, first to satirize the dot-com boom of the late 1990s and then to examine the camaraderie of playing first-person shooter video games with work colleagues, to ponder what the passage of time feels like to geologists or productivity gurus. The River at Night is a modern formalist masterpiece as empathetic, inventive, and funny as anything ever written. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels
