Time Zone J is Julie Doucet's first inked comic since famously quitting in the nineties after an exhausting career in an industry that, at the time, made little room for women. Based on diary entries from the whirlwind romance, the passion and high emotions of youth-before you know the limits of love, before you know the difference between love and lust-seep through the pages. In contrast to the tryst, Doucet draws herself today, at fifty-five. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Hannah is a thirty-something wife, home-health worker, and antiwar activist. Her husband, Johnny, is a stay-at-home pothead working - or 'working' - on building them a house before the winter chill sets in. They're currently living and screwing in the back of a truck, hoping for a pregnancy, which seems like it will never come. Told with tenderness and care in an undefined near future, Eleanor Davis's The Hard Tomorrow blazes unrestrained, as moments of human connection are doused in fear and threats. The second in a seven-volume series of the best of Shigeru Mizuki's Kitaro comics, designed with a kid-friendly format and price point! Kitaro Meets Nurarihyon is the second volume in the adventures of Shigeru Mizuki's bizarre yokai boy Kitaro and his gaggle of otherworldly friends. These seven stories date from the golden age of Gegege no Kitaro, when Mizuki had perfected the balance of folklore, comedy, and horror that made Kitaro one of Japan's most beloved characters. In Kitaro Meets Nurarihyon, Kitaro and his father, Medama Oyaji, face off against one of their most powerful enemies--the self-styled Yokai Supreme Commander known as Nurarihyon. Over the course of this volume, Kitaro takes on the swamp-dwelling Sawa Kozo, the mysterious Diamond Yokai, and the sea giant called Umizato, and wages a double feature of battles against the bizarre Odoro Odoro. Finally, Kitaro journeys to hell itself in the infamous and surreal story 'Hell Ride.' In addition to more than 150 pages of Mizuki's all-ages monster fun, Kitaro Meets Nurarihyon includes bonus materials: 'Yokai Files' that introduce Japan's folklore monsters and a 'History of Kitaro' essay by the translator Zack Davisson. If you found the world of yokai fascinating in The Birth of Kitaro, you will find even more to love in Kitaro Meets Nurarihyon! (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Jenny becomes obsessed with a strange 'mirror Facebook,' which presents an alternate, possibly better, version of herself. Helen finds her clothes growing baggy, her shoes looser, and as she shrinks away to nothingness, the world around her recedes as well. The animals of the city briefly open their minds to us, and we see the world as they do. A mysterious music file surfaces on the internet and forms the basis of a utopian society - or is it a cult? Boundless is at once fantastical and realist, playfully hinting at possible transcendence: from one's culture, one's relationship, oneself. This collection of short stories is a showcase for the masterful blend of emotion and humour of award-winning cartoonist Jillian Tamaki. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Kitaro the Vampire Slayer is the fifth volume in Shigeru Mizuki's bizarre stories about a yokai boy and his entourage of otherworldly friends. One of the most popular Kitaro tales, the title story pits Kitaro and his family against a Beatles-inspired mop-topped, guitar-playing vampire named Erit and his castle of horrors. In an unexpected twist?spoiler alert!?Kitaro meets his demise, but even death is hardly enough to keep our favorite yokai boy down. Along with the villainous vampire, Kitaro faces a trio of monsters straight from Japanese folklore. Mizuki often pulled from classic Japanese folk tales for inspiration, as shown in these three stories. A certain serpent and temple bell appear in 'The Phantom Steam Engine,' then it's onto a bird-like creature with a big beak in 'Ubume,' and Kitaro had better not look behind him when the Ushiro Gami comes to town. The four stories in this volume are collected from the late '60s golden age of Gegege no Kitaro. Appearing in English for the first time, this kid-friendly edition is translated by Mizuki-scholar Zack Davisson and includes bonus features like 'Yokai Files,' where we are introduced to Japan's folklore monsters, and the fifth installment of the 'History of Kitaro' essay by Davisson. For fans of quirky horror, Kitaro the Vampire Slayer is not one to miss! (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Paying For It combines the personal and sexual aspects of Brown's autobiographical work (I Never Liked You, The Playboy) with the polemical drive of Louis Riel. Paying for It offers an entirely contemporary exploration of sex work-from the timid john who rides his bike to his escorts, wonders how to tip so as not to offend, and reads Dan Savage for advice, to the modern-day transactions complete with online reviews, seemingly willing participants, and clean apartments devoid of clichéd street corners, drugs, or pimps. Complete with a surprise ending, Paying for It continues to provide endless debate and conversation about sex work. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Julie Doucet arrived in comics in the 1990s as a fully formed cartoonist. Her comic book series Dirty Plotte was visionary both for the medium and for storytelling. Her stories are candid, funny, and intimate, plumbing the depths of the female psyche while charting the fragility of the men around her. Her artwork is dense and confident, never wavering in the wit and humour of its owner. Doucet was active in comics for 15 years before she moved on to other media. Her influence casts a long shadow over the medium as Dirty Plotte is quite simply one of the most iconic comic book series to have ever been created. Dirty Plotte: The Complete Julie Doucet collects the entire comic book series, including the acclaimed My New York Diary, as well as rare comics and previously unpublished material; a reproduction of the first Dirty Plotte mini comic; essays about her comics legacy and feminist influence by curator Dan Nadel and academic Martine Delvaux respectively; an interview by comics scholar Christian Gasser; and personal anecdotes from Jami Attenberg, Adrian Tomine, and more. Thirty years before the advent of the literary graphic novel movement in the United States, Yoshihiro Tatsumi created a library of comics that draws parallels to modern prose fiction and today's alternative comics. The stories collected in The Push Man are simultaneously haunting, disturbing, and darkly humorous. A lone man travels the country, projecting pornographic films for private individuals while attempting to maintain a normal home life. An auto mechanic's obsession with a female TV personality turns fatal after a chance meeting between the two. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Sniff is causing trouble with another of his get-rich-quick schemes, Moominmaiden falls in love with the inspector's bad boy nephew, and Moominmamma is offering up plum cake to whosoever should need it. As always, the experiences of the Moomin family are poignant, melancholy, and strangely wise, with just a dash of drolly funny and a pinch of slapstick. Without a doubt, Lars Jansson's Moomin Volume Eight is a treat for the whole family. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

While trying to understand his ennui, Seth discovers the life and work of Kalo, a forgotten New Yorker cartoonist from the 1940s. But his obsession blinds him to the needs of his lover and the quiet desperation of his family. Wry self-reflection and moody colors characterize this tale about learning lessons from nostalgia. His playful and sophisticated experiment with memoir provoked a furious debate among cartoon historians and archivists about the existence of Kalo, and prompted a Details feature about Seth's 'hoax.' The Hospital Suite is a landmark work by celebrated cartoonist and small-press legend John Porcellino, an autobiographical collection detailing his struggles with illness in the 1990s and 2000s. In 1997, John needed emergency surgery to remove a benign tumor from his small intestine. In the wake of the surgery, John had numerous health complications that led to a flare-up of his preexisting tendencies toward anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The Hospital Suite is Porcellino's response to these experiences, simply told stories drawn in an honest, heart-wrenching style. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels
