(E) Andrew Ireland Created as a spinoff of Doctor Who, the BBC television series Torchwood is a unique blend of science fiction and fantasy, with much more of an adult flavor than its progenitor. With its memorable characters, adult language, subversive humor, and openly homosexual and bisexual storylines, Torchwood provides a wealth of material for scholarly analysis and debate. Using Torchwood as its focal point, this collection of essays by experts and enthusiasts provides an interpretive framework for understanding the continually developing forms and genres of contemporary television drama. The first superhero team from the Silver Age of comics, DC's Justice League has seen many iterations since its first appearance in 1960. This collection of new essays examines more than five decades of Justice League comics and related titles. Each essay considers a storyline or era of the franchise in its historical and social contexts. Exploring both the popular culture and relevant events of the day, the contributors discuss how the Vietnam War was addressed in Justice League comics, how the Cold War transformed the roles of superheroes in the DC universe and how the post-9/11 political climate affected a crossover character. With actress Pam Grier's breakthrough in Coffy and Foxy Brown, women entered action, science fiction, war, westerns and martial arts films - genres that had previously been considered the domain of male protagonists. This ground-breaking cinema, however, was - and still is - viewed with ambivalence. This volume contains an in-depth critical analysis and study of the female hero in popular film from 1970 to 2006. The entrance of the female hero into films written by, produced by and made for men is viewed through the lens of feminism and post-feminism arguments. Analyzed works include films with actors Michelle Yeoh and Meiko Kaji, the Alien films, the Lara Croft franchise, Charlie's Angels, and television productions such as Xena: Warrior Princess and Alias. Few scholars nursed on the literary canon would dispute that knowledge of Western literature benefits readers and writers of the superhero genre. This analysis of superhero comics as Romance literature shows that the reverse is true - knowledge of the superhero romance has something to teach critics of traditional literature. Establishing the comic genre as a cousin to Arthurian myth, Spenser, and Shakespeare, it uses comics to inform readings of The Faerie Queene, The Tempest, Malory's Morte d'Arthur and more, while employing authors like Ben Johnson to help explain comics by Alan Moore, Jack Kirby, and Grant Morrison and characters and teams like Iron Man, the Hulk, the X-Men, and the Justice League. Horror comics have been a part of the fabric of the industry since the Golden Age of the 1940s. William Schoell examines the evolution of the genre from the Golden Age, through the Silver Age in the 1960, up until the end of the Bronze Age in the early 1980s. Included are the earliest series, like American Comics Group's Adventures into the Unknown and Prize Comics' Frankenstein, and the controversial and gory comics of the '50s, such as EC's infamous and influential Tales from the Crypt. The explosion of horror titles following the relaxation of the comics code in the '70s is fully documented with chapters on Marvel's prodigious output, DC's anthologies and titles such as Swamp Thing, as well as the notable contributions of firms like Gold Key and Atlas. This book examines how horror comics exploited everyday terrors, and often reflected societal attitudes toward women and people who were different. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

Since Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938, the superhero has changed with the times to remain a relevant icon of American popular culture. This collection explores the evolution of the Superman character and demonstrates how his alterations mirror historical changes in American society. These essays examine Superman's patriotic heroism during World War II, his increase in power in the early years of the Cold War, his death and resurrection at the end of the Cold War, and his recent dramatic reimagining. This volume reveals as much about America as it does about the champion of Truth, Justice, and the American Way. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

This is the first book to comprehensively examine the multitude of non-Archie teen humor comic books, including girls and boys such as Patsy Walker, Hedy Wolfe, Buzz Baxter and Wendy Parker from Marvel; Judy Foster, Buzzy, Binky and Scribbly from DC; Candy from Quality Comics; and Hap Hazard from Ace Comics. It covers the history of the characters, who drew them, why (or why not) they succeeded as rivals for the Archie Series, highlights of both unusual and typical stories and much more. The author provides major plotlines and a history of the development of each series. Much has been written about the Archie characters, but until now very little has been told about most of their many comic book competitors. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

(E) Kevin Durand, Mary Leigh From his first comic-book appearance in 1939 through his many incarnations on the big screen, the archetypal superhero known as The Batman has never been far from the American consciousness. Beyond shaping the way we read comics and graphic novels, Batman has also captured the scholarly imagination, telling us much about our society and ourselves. These essays examine Batman through a wide range of disciplines - philosophy, literature, psychology, pop culture, and more. (immagine) Categoria: Books: novel/sci fi/horror

In December 1977, struggling Canadian comic book artist Dave Sim self-published the first issue of Cerebus the Aardvark, a Conan the Barbarian satire featuring a foul-tempered, sword-wielding creature trapped in a human world. Over the next 26 years, Sim, and later collaborator Gerhard, produced an epic 6,000-page graphic novel, the longest-running English language comic series by a single creative team. This in-depth work, the first collection of critical essays on Cerebus, provides a multifaceted approach to Sim and Gerhard's complex and entertaining oeuvre. Since the creation of the comic book, cases of legal conflict and confusion have often arisen where concepts such as public domain, unincorporated entities, and moral rights are involved. As a result, comics creators are frequently concerned about whether they are protecting themselves. This book seeks to provide those answers, examining the legal history of comics and presenting information in a way that is understandable to everyone. As these lessons are explored, the reader will learn the importance of contracts, the basics of copyright and trademark, the precautions necessary when working with public domain characters and the effects of censorship. by K. Dale Koontz Joss Whedon once identified himself as an 'angry, hard-line atheist' who is nevertheless 'fascinated by the concept of devotion.' While organized religion seems to hold no satisfactory answers for Whedon, his dedication to exploring the meanings of faith and belief can be seen in many of the characters he has created for such works as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, Serenity, and Fray. This work examines a variety of Whedon's characters and discusses what can be learned from their struggles and discoveries regarding religion and belief. In the 1980s, as comics readers grew older, fans started calling for more sophisticated stories. They were also no longer just following the adventures of popular characters; writers and artists with distinctive styles were in demand. DC Comics and Marvel went looking for such mavericks and found them in the United Kingdom. Creators like Alan Moore (Watchmen, Saga of the Swamp Thing), Grant Morrison (The Invisibles, Flex Mentallo) and Garth Ennis (Preacher) migrated from the anarchical British comics industry to the U.S. mainstream and shook up the status quo yet came to rely on the genius of the American system.
