What Am I Doing Here? is a startling masterwork by one of the forgotten innovators of American comics. In 1945, after more than a decade as a commercial illustrator, Abner Dean invented a genre all his own: One might call it the Existential Gag Cartoon. He used the elegant draftsmanship and single-panel format of the standard cartoons of the day, but turned them to a deeper, stranger purpose. What Am I Doing Here? depicts a world at once alien and familiar, in which Dean's unclad Everyman searches for love, happiness, and the answers to life's biggest questions. Over four decades and a multitude of books, 'Colonel' Glen Baxter has built a world and a language all his own - slightly familiar, decidedly abnormal, irresistibly funny. Have you felt the terror of a failed Szechuan dinner? Have you seen what happens at precisely 6:15? Do you know where the beards are stored? Either way, this is the book for you. This new selection brings together highlights from the full sweep of his long career and is sure to enchant both confirmed Baxterians and those who are in dire need of an introduction. Before Charles Johnson found fame as a novelist and won the National Book Award for Middle Passage in 1991, he was a cartoonist, and a very good one. Taught via mail correspondence course by the comics editor Lawrence Lariar, mentored by the New Yorker cartoonist Charles Barsotti, and inspired by the call of poet Amiri Baraka to celebrate and depict Black life in America, Johnson crafted some of the fiercest and funniest cartoons of the twentieth century. This collection brings together work from across his career: college newspaper gags, selections from his books Black Humor and Half-Past Nation Time, his unpublished manuscript Lumps in the Melting Pot, and uncollected pieces. A futuristic punk ventures through a madcap, dystopian fantasia in this astounding work of comics literature by a celebrated artist and illustrator. Gary Panter is one of America's great creative forces: the illustrator for the trailblazing punk magazine Slash, set designer for the legendary TV show Pee-wee's Playhouse, and one of the wildest, most innovative comics artists of all time. Jimbo: Adventures in Paradise is a leap into the uproarious life of Panter's ever-cheerful punk everyman, Jimbo, and a perfect introduction to Panter's ever-shifting style. Amid a jumbled cityscape of rundown New York City streets and futuristic Los Angeles freeways, Jimbo crowd-surfs at a riot, makes amends with Ernie Bushmiller's Nancy, and rescues his pal Smoggo's sister from giant cockroaches, all while the world teeters between extravagance and apocalypse. Veering from the crude to the elegant, the wise to the funny, Jimbo: Adventures in Paradise proves Panter is a master of cartooning, and still way ahead of the rest of us. In 1942, almost a year after America entered the Second World War, Jay Jackson-a former railroad worker and sign painter, now working as a cartoonist and illustrator for the legendary Black newspaper The Chicago Defender-did something unexpected. He took the Defender's stale and long-running gag strip Bungleton Green and remade it into a gripping, anti-racist science fiction adventure comic. He teamed the bumbling Green with a crew of Black teens called the Mystic Commandos, and together, they battled the enemies of America and racial equality in the past, present, and future-Nazis, segregationist senators, Benedict Arnold, fifth columnists, 18th-century American slave traders, evil scientists, and a nation of racist Green Men. Never before collected or republished, Jackson's stories are packed with jaw-dropping twists and breathtaking action, and present a radical vision of a brighter American future. Colonial history haunts this stunning, spectral-looking graphic novel, a spiritual sequel to the author's Yellow Negroes and Other Imaginary Creatures. Yvan Alagbé continues his interrogation of race and family in modern France. The book focuses on the dream-like memories of a woman named Clare, who is spending time with her family for her grandfather's funeral. Alagbé shifts between narratives of the family, all haunted by the legacy of France's colonial subjugation of Africa. Alagbé works in stormy grayscale washes, using comics, as he puts it, as 'a sacred dimension which celebrates, questions and perpetuates life.... I believe that life is not damnation but grace.' Though virtually unknown in the United States, Tadao Tsuge is one of the original masters of alternative manga, and one of the world's great artists of the down-and-out. Never before available in English, this new collection of his stories from the late 60s and the 70s depicts the lives of punks, vagrants, gangsters, and other lost souls with gritty lyricism. It is a raucous, exhilarating vision of street brawls and dive bars, shantytowns and brothels, and an unsettling portrait of postwar Japan. Edmond Baudoin has long been one of the most revered and influential figures in European comics, renowned for his slashing, expressive brushwork and narrative experimentation. NYR Comics presents the first English translation of his most intimate and accessible book, his graphic memoir of growing up with his beloved brother, Piero. Whether stuck in bed with whooping cough or out exploring in the woods, the two brothers draw together endlessly. They confront Martians, battle octopuses, stage epic battles between medieval castles, and fly high over the earth. Inevitably, they begin to grow apart, and their shared artistic life is replaced by schoolwork, romance, dances, motorcycles, and the struggle to decide what sort of people they want to be. Piero is a delicate, exuberant testament to the joys of childhood, and a bittersweet account of what it means to become an adult - and an artist. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Nicole Claveloux's short stories, originally published in the late 1970s and never before collected in English, are among the most beautiful comics ever created: whimsical, intoxicating, with the freshness and splendor of dreams. In hallucinatory color or elegant black-and-white, she brings us into lands that are very different from our own but oddly recognizable. They are lands filled with murderous grandmothers and lonely city dwellers, bad-tempered vegetables and walls that are surprisingly easy to fall through, lands in which the very air seems alive and capable of telling you a dirty joke (or the meaning of life). This new collection is the perfect introduction to the work of an unforgettable, unjustly neglected master of French comics. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

The life of an orphaned boy is shaped by the devotion of a fantastical Gull in this lovingly rendered, entirely wordless graphic novel by a contemporary comics innovator. Told in striking colors and loose but confident lines, the story begins when a young boy awakens late one night to find his home on fire. The boy is saved by a lanky, shapeshifting Gull (who may or may not be real). Orphaned by the fire, and now adrift in a boat piloted by the Gull, the boy faces an uncertain future, one that will be both helped and hindered by his new attendant. Without a word, Kessler builds a strange but recognizable world, using it to explore all the forms that grief, jealousy, longing, and love can take in our lives, and the compassion and cruelty that can dwell in a single heart. Filled with all the warmth and poignancy of a great folktale, The Gull Yettin proves that Kessler is pushing comics to new heights. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels Annullato/esaurito

If you were reading The Daily Worker in the 1930s, you'd have come across the words of Woody Guthrie and Richard Wright, along with the cartoons of the mysterious A. Redfield. Redfield was actually New Yorker cartoonist and future Danny and the Dinosaur author Syd Hoff. Scorning what he saw as the complicity and stale yucks of cartooning peers like Peter Arno, Hoff set his sights on the rich and powerful and revealed them for what they were: hilariously inept, deeply selfish, and incredibly dangerous. Hoff spared nothing from his pen, lampooning police brutality, thin-skinned industrialists, racists, and the looming threat of fascism at home and abroad. Michael McMillan has said he's 'not really a cartoonist,' but the evidence suggests otherwise. Born and raised in California, he studied architecture and design before a visit in 1969 to an exhibition of Chicago's Hairy Who and encounters with the bourgeoning San Francisco underground comix scene convinced McMillan to make his own comics. He plunged in, drawing for legendary publications like Weirdo, Young Lust, Lemme Out Here, Arcade, and eventually his own one-issue wonder, Terminal. Over the following decades, McMillian kept playing with the form of comics. He reimagined the kind of stories single-panel, two-panel, and many-panel strips could tell, blending favorite genres from his childhood (horror, swords and sandals, science fiction) with more mature themes (autobiography, dating, sex) into new and striking forms. McMillan's comics are collected here for the first time, alongside a selection of his electrifying sculptures, eye-popping paintings, and stunning pages from the journals he kept during his years rock climbing in California's Sierra Nevada. With unsettling power, the title story depicts the lives of undocumented migrant workers in Paris. Alain, a Beninese immigrant, struggles to protect his family and his white girlfriend, Claire, while engaged in a strange, tragic dance of obsession and repulsion with Mario, a retired French Algerian policeman. It is already a classic of alternative comics, and, like the other stories in this collection, becomes more urgent every day. The first-ever collection of comics by Ed Subitzky-comedy writer, National Lampoon legend, Atari spokesperson, 'The Impostor' on The David Letterman Show, and an enduring influence on an entire generation of cartoonists and humorists. A cartoon that hypnotizes you. A cartoon that goes through puberty. A cartoon that covers the history of the universe in a few dozen panels. A cartoon that is a crossword puzzle. For the entire run of National Lampoon, Ed Subitzky bent, broke, and reimagined what a cartoon could do, creating some of the funniest and most lasting work of the era. In this first-ever collection of his work, Subitzky's range as a cartoonist and humorist is on full display, including not his work in television and advertising: collaborating on a humor album with John Belushi, appearing as 'The Imposter' on The David Letterman Show, and acting as a spokesperson for an Atari video game. A Japanese manga legend's autobiographical graphic novel about a struggling artist and the first full-length work by the great Yoshiharu Tsuge available in the English language! Yoshiharu Tsuge is one of comics' most celebrated and influential artists, but his work has been almost entirely unavailable to English-speaking audiences. The Man Without Talent, his first book ever to be translated into English, is an unforgiving self-portrait of frustration. Swearing off cartooning as a profession, Tsuge takes on a series of unconventional jobs - used camera salesman, ferryman, and stone collector - hoping to find success among the hucksters, speculators, and deadbeats he does business with. Instead, he fails again and again, unable to provide for his family, earning only their contempt and his own. The result is a dryly funny look at the pitfalls of the creative life, and an off-kilter portrait of modern Japan. Accompanied by an essay from translator Ryan Holmberg that discusses Tsuge's importance in comics and Japanese literature, The Man Without Talent is one of the great works of comics literature.
