GOLDEN AGE CLASSICS THE SPIRIT HC VOLUME 4 Quality Comics was an American comic book publishing company that operated from 1937 to 1956 and was largely influential in creating the 'Golden Age' of comic books. From 1940–1950, printer Everett M. "Busy" Arnold reprinted Spirit stories under his Quality Comics banner, first individually from 1940–1947 as one of the features in 92 issues of Police Comics and from 1944–1950 as 22 issues of The Spirit. The Spirit is a fictional masked crime fighter created by cartoonist Will Eisner, who fights crime with the blessing of the city's police commissioner Dolan, an old friend. Despite the Spirit's origin as detective/criminologist Denny Colt, his real identity was rarely referred to after his first appearance, and for all intents and purposes he was simply "The Spirit". The stories are presented in a wide variety of styles, from straight forward crime drama and noir to lighthearted adventure, from mystery and horror to comedy and love stories, often with hybrid elements that twisted genre and reader expectations. Comic book stories from the 1940s and 1950s may depict some ethnic and racial prejudices that were oncecommon place in American culture. Such depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. While not representing the publisher's view of today's society, these stories are printed as they were originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Lou Fine was one of the most impressive and influential artists to ever work in comics. His fluid figures were admired and copied by such greats as Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. In the early 40's, the heyday of the Golden Age, he worked for Everett M. 'Busy' Arnold at Quality Comics, and in addition to his impressive covers, he worked on such comics as the Black Condor. Richard Grey Jr., having lost his parents, was raised by giant black condors and after studying his condor foster parents, he learned to fly. Fine also created The Ray, a reporter named Hubert 'Happy' Terrill who was covering the story of a high-flying 'strato-balloon' exploring the upper atmosphere. An electrical storm struck and while closing the outer airlock door, 'Happy' got the full brunt of the storm's energy and the unfiltered sunlight giving him his super powers to absorb energy from his surroundings and emit it from his body in any form he chose. Collects the Black Condor stories from Crack Comics #12-21 (April 1941-February 1942) and The Ray stories from Smash Comics #23-30 (June 1941-January 1942). In the early 40's, the heyday of the Golden Age, he worked for Everett M. He befriended a hermit monk named Father Pierre who convinced him that he should use his unique attributes to do good and so was born the Black Condor. This one's a wacky entry and no denying, with Canadian publisher Superior Comics coming into the four-color horror ring all gloved up and swinging fit to punch the lights out of anybody who stands in their way. They kicked off with Journey Into Fear, Strange Mysteries (as opposed to pretty straightforward and perhaps even slightly boring mysteries), and the one-word extravaganza that was Mysteries, the latter calling itself variously Mysteries (its legal title) and, on the cover, Mysteries Weird and Strange. The earlier tales were bizarre and quirky and it's pretty clear that inspiration was in short supply that day. Good stuff though, Clancy, with pens, pencils and plots coming from, among others, Jay Disbrow and the Igor Shop: clear a space on the shelf pronto. Collects Mysteries Weird and Strange #1-5 (May 1953 to January 1954). (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Writers' and Artists' Names: Artists include Jack Katz, Mike Sekowsky, Rocco Mastroserio, Artie Saaf, Nick Cardy, Mike Roy, Gene Fawcette, Geogre Tuska and Alex Toth Synopsis: STANDARD COMICS - VOL 2: ISSUES 11 - 15 August 1953 to July 1954 PLUS BONUS ISSUE - WHO IS NEXT? ISSUE 5 January 1953 Special Notes: It was the 1950's - the Atomic Age, the Cold War, and just the before the Space Race. Comics books were the education, the entertainment, and -- according to some -- the downfall of America. What a great time! We loved to be scared - still do, it seems - from the comfort of our own home, secure in the knowledge that there's no real danger (or so we think). Nothing could match the imagination, the surprise, and the chilling- of-your-spine like the great horror comics of yesteryear. Who Is Next? #5, is a suspense one-shot and features a town terrorized by a serial killer. slipcased edition. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Comic Media were a respectable publisher that produced two horror titles, Weird Terror and Horrific, and we've selected a few of these fabulous weird tales of terror issues here in this collection! The odd thing about these titles is that the publisher was convinced that faces sold comics; he insisted that every issue have some sort of a face dominating the cover, and Don Heck, his cover artist, eagerly obliged. Werewolf faces, monster faces, terrified faces -- always faces. Go get 'em, pronto, because by 1955 Don was recruited by Stan Lee and went on to be one of the architects of what became known as 'The Marvel Age of Comics' so you won't be getting any more of those fabulous covers! After a seaquake, a huge lizard-like creature walked out of the ocean and almost destroyed a fishing village in Ireland. Fortunately for the village, the same quake that brought the 65 foot monster to land has also grounded a salvage ship, the crew of which proved up to the task of capturing the beast. The monster, dubbed Gorgo, was really just a youngster and its 200 foot tall mother was coming for him. After a pitched battle with the British army, Gorga's mother, Ogra, was able to free her child and they both went lumbering back to the sea! Steve Ditko's artwork just engulfs you in this Silver Age giant monster tale! Collects Gorgo #1-5 (June 1961-January 1962). (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Doug Danville was a wealthy New York playboy who decided to fight crime. He put on a costume and began his career as K the Unknown. He later changed his costume and became the BLACK OWL! Doug got involved with Terry Dane, a private investigator and true to comic-book tradition, she greatly admired the Black Owl and belittled Doug Danville for being useless. Never-the-less he continued fighting criminals as the BLACK OWL - until he enlisted in the Army and handed down his costume to Walt Walters, the father of Yank and Doodle (more of this later). With a whole host of enemies including Chief Skullface, the Fox, Frankenstein, Funnibone, the Green Mummy, the Tiger Lady, the Laughing Head and the Terrible Midge, among others – the BLACK OWL had plenty to keep him busy and probably had to do overtime during the day time hours! He worked as a vaudeville performer and a cartoonist and reporter for the Portland News. Wolverton was a master in caricaturing the human face and body and his drawings have elicited a wide range of reactions - he even described himself as a 'Producer of Preposterous Pictures of peculiar People who Prowl this Perplexing Planet'. Preferring to work with pen and ink, Wolverton's lack of artistic schooling gave his drawings an otherworldly appearance. There was no other artist at the time who drew like him! Harvey Kurtzman felt 'Wolverton never borrowed, never hacked, and he never shortchanged the public - Wolverton was an original.' In 1991 he was posthumously inducted in the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame and in 2000 in the Will Eisner Hall of Fame. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels
