In 1919, identical twin brothers Michael and Lance Gallant were born in New York City, both possessed T-shaped birthmarks on their left wrists. The boys were very close growing up. During the Second World War, Michael enlisted in the Air Force as a pilot. Unfortunately, on their 23rd birthday, Michael died when his hanger exploded and his brother, Lance, who saw the tragedy, grabbed Michael from the flames, only to have him die in his arms. Lance wanted vengeance! The Fates of Greek mythology witnessed Michael's death and decided to turn Lance into their champion. Soon after, Lance is visited by Michael's ghost, who told his brother they were still linked and if he touched his birthmark, the brothers would merge and gain superpowers, including superhuman strength, endurance, flight, invulnerability, and invisibility. His fluid figures were admired and copied by such greats as Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. In the early 40's, the heyday of the Golden Age, he worked for Everett M. 'Busy' Arnold at Quality Comics along with such greats as Reed Crandall, Jack Cole and Will Eisner and in addition to his impressive covers, he worked on such comics as the Black Condor; aka Richard Grey Jr. having lost his parents was raised by giant black condors and after studying his condor foster parents, he learned to fly. He befriended a hermit monk named Father Pierre who convinced him that he should use his unique attributes to do good and so was born the Black Condor. Lou Fine also created The Ray, a reporter named Hubert 'Happy' Terrill who was covering the story of a high-flying 'strato-balloon' exploring the upper atmosphere. An electrical storm struck and while closing the outer airlock door, 'Happy' got the full brunt of the storm's energy and the unfiltered sunlight giving him his super powers to absorb energy from his surroundings and emit it from his body in any form he chose, also using it to propel himself through the air. Strange Mysteries features an eccentric mix of weird and strange tales from Ross Andru, Jon D'Agostino, Alvin C. Hollingeworth, Joe Orlando, Ed Goldfarb, Tont Tallaico, and Joe Kubert. I.W. Publishing became notorious for publishing unauthorized reprints of other company's comics, often with new covers. The numbering of most of the company's titles is misleading, often not starting at issue #1 and skipping issue numbers. Incredibly though, the company produced 118 separate titles, no mean achievement! Plus: the bonus issue Fantastic Tales featuring glorious horror tales from the fantastic A.C.
