Toby Press was a small but respectable comics publisher, which also used the imprint Minoan; they put out one issue of Tales of Terror, then got hit by a cease-and-desist order from E.C., which used that title for their annuals. Toby dropped that and started over with Tales of Horror, which ran thirteen issues. Toby may be the only comics publisher to swipe the urbane and cynical stories of John Collier, rather than relying on Poe, Lovecraft, and the like. Collects Tales of Terror #1 (1952) and Tales of Horror #1-4 (June 1952 to March 1953). (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

In 1939, Montague Dexter built a rocket ship for that year's World Fair and to demonstrate that it works, he and his wife took off and flew to Mars. Unfortunately, the ship crashed as soon as it reached the red planet. He spent the next sixty one years trying to repair the ship. By that point, he and his wife were far too old to handle the rigors of space travel. But their son, Rex Dexter, was young and fit and he piloted his parent's space ship back home. Earth at the turn of the millennium was much more advanced than the world his parents left behind. Reprints Rex Dexter of Mars (1940). (immagine) Categoria: Magazines

Synopsis: AVON : EERIE COMICS #1 January 1947 It was January 1947 that the first real, indisputable horror comic came along - EERIE COMICS #1, published by Avon. It had a striking cover that was, well… eerie, depicting a strange-looking man with a knife on the steps of some sort of ruin, approaching a bound woman - a theme that was to be repeated countless times in the future . . . Whet your appetite on these horrors inside including 'The Eyes of the Tiger' by Bob Fujitani featuring a pet tiger who gets his first taste for blood - no surprises there then? 'Dead Man's Tale' by Jon Small gives us the story of a bottle that gave Myron Morgan wealth and how he died when it was destroyed. 'The Man-Eating Lizards' by Joe Kubert, when a plane goes down in the ocean, the surviving crew members find themselves on an island of giant, man-eating lizards. 'The Strange Case of Henpecked Harry' by Fred Kida, tells how Harry Horton plots the death of his wife, only to be driven mad by the guilt. It's hard to point to a particular source or inspiration, such as radio or the pulps, for any of these stories as they were not adaptations and didn't come from any existing series - yet here they are, together as probably the world's first true horror comic! From 1940-1950, printer Everett M. 'Busy' Arnold reprinted Spirit stories under his Quality Comics banner, first individually from 1940-1947 as one of the features in 92 issues of Police Comics and from 1944-1950 as 22 issues of The Spirit. The Spirit is a fictional masked crime fighter created by cartoonist Will Eisner, who fights crime with the blessing of the city's police commissioner Dolan, an old friend. The stories are presented in a wide variety of styles, from straight forward crime drama and noir to lighthearted adventure, from mystery and horror to comedy and love stories, often with hybrid elements that twisted genre and reader expectations. Previously released as a hard cover and now available for the first time in our popular SOFTEE format. Reprints The Spirit Volume 2 #5-8 (Summer 1946-Spring 1947).
