After their grandmother's death, J?r?mie and his brother attempt to learn more about their family's Jewish-Polish roots. But J?r?mie is less interested in how the Holocaust affected his family and more interested in understanding what it means to be Jewish and Polish in today's world. Instead of going to Auschwitz they go instead to Zelech?w, the village where their grandfather was born; Warsaw, their grandmother's hometown; and Krak?w. In their quest for identity, they put together the pieces of their family history and discover a country still affected by its past. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

A Chinese Life is an astonishing graphic novel set against the backdrop of the creation of the People's Republic of China in 1949. This distinctively drawn work chronicles the rise and reign of Chairman Mao Zedong, and his sweeping, often cataclysmic vision for the most populated country on the planet. Li Kunwu spent more than 30 years as a state artist for the Communist Party. Working with Philippe ?ti?, the artist has created a memoir of self and state, a rich, very human account of a major historical moment with contemporary consequences. Herman is a reclusive, straight-laced street cleaner - or so it seems to those he works with on the city's waterfront. But he has an extraordinary hidden talent: the ability to transform his appearance at will. When the cinematic genius MIO calls an open audition for her new movie, Herman joins the audition line. As he waits, swept up in the frenzy of creative ambition that has overcome the city, his past life becomes increasingly remote. Dazzled by Herman's ability to adapt to any role, MIO deems the rest of the cast redundant. When the cult director's new film premieres, with Herman performing every role, it doesn't get the reaction she expects. Spectacularly drawn, Herman by Trade is a captivating graphic novel about art, identity, and making space for self-expression. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

This graphic biography documents the brief and intense period of creativity Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) spent in Arles, Provence, in southern France. Here van Gogh dreams of setting up an artists' studio, a haven where he and his friends can paint together. But attacks of mental illness leave the painter confused and disoriented. Throughout this period of intense emotion and hardship, Vincent's brother Theo stands by him, offering constant and unconditional support. Writer and illustrator Barbara Stok breathes riveting new life into a fascinating episode of art history, creating a vivid portrait of one of the world's most beloved and legendary artists. In the mid-1930s, Irmina, an ambitious young German, moves to London. At a cocktail party, she meets Howard Green, one of the first black students at Oxford, who, like Irmina, is working towards an independent existence. However, their relationship comes to an abrupt end when Irmina, constrained by the political situation in Hitler's Germany, is forced to return home. As war approaches and her contact with Howard is broken, it becomes clear to Irmina that prosperity will only be possible through the betrayal of her ideals. Based on a true story, this moving and perceptive graphic novel perfectly conjures the oppressive atmosphere of wartime Germany, reflecting with compassion and intelligence on the complicity that results from the choice, conscious or otherwise, to look away. Diego Rivera was a revolutionary painter in more ways than one. Attending art school at 11, by his twenties he was counted among the most influential figures of the Parisian art scene of the early 20th century. Rivera's murals, both in his native Mexico and the United States, reflect the contradictory turbulence of his character and times. He met Lenin in Paris, Stalin in Moscow, and offered refuge to Trotsky during his Mexican exile. Meanwhile, his work was commissioned by giants of capitalism: Henry Ford and John D. Rockefeller. This tells the story of the extraordinary life and times of an artist for whom myth and reality fused. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

An investigation and celebration of the origins of the world-renowned Latino musical samba-jazz movement Bossa Nova, They Shot The Piano Player captures a fleeting time bursting with creative freedom at a turning-point in Latin American history in the '60s and '70s, before the continent was riven by totalitarian regimes. Francisco Tenório Cerqueira Júnior, born in Rio de Janeiro, was one of the most recognized musicians of the samba-jazz movement. At 3 a.m. on March 18, 1976, after giving a concert at the Gran Rex in Buenos Aires, the 34-year-old pianist went out to get some cigarettes. He was never seen again. What happened that night? This is the question that moves the narrator of this documentary graphic novel to initiate an investigation into the fateful events that led to the death of a musician destined to change the course of Brazilian music forever. In Munch, writer and artist Steffen Kverneland brings the story of one of the world's most influential painters to vivid life. This extraordinary, inventive graphic novel uses text drawn exclusively from the quotes of Edvard Munch and his contemporaries. Filled with authenticity and life, Munch debunks the familiar myth of the half-mad expressionist painter - anguished, starving, and ill-treated - and draws out his neglected sense of humor and optimism. Born out of a lifelong fascination with Munch's life and work, this is a landmark of graphic biography and the funniest, most entertaining portrait yet of a complex man and the pioneering artist behind The Scream. In 1895 the Lumière brothers invented the cinematograph. Less than a year later, 23-year-old Alice Guy, the first female filmmaker in cinema history, made The Cabbage Fairy, a 60-second movie, for Léon Gaumont, and would go on to direct more than 300 films before 1922. Her life is a shadow history of early cinema, the chronicle of an art form coming into its own. A free and independent woman who rubbed shoulders with masters such as Georges Méliès and the Lumières, she was the first to define the professions of screenwriter and producer. She directed the first feminist satire, then the first sword-and-sandal epic, before crossing the Atlantic in 1907 to the United States and becoming the first woman to found her own production company. Guy died in 1969, excluded from the annals of film history. In 2011 Martin Scorsese honored this cinematic visionary, 'forgotten by the industry she had helped create,' describing her as 'a filmmaker of rare sensitivity, with a remarkable poetic eye and an extraordinary feel for locations.' The same can be said of Catel and Bocquet's luminous account of her life. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

In 1969, humankind set foot on the moon. Neil Armstrong, Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin, and Michael Collins carried the fire for all the world. Backed by the brightest minds in engineering and science, the three boarded a rocket and flew through the void, just to know that we could. In Apollo, Matt Fitch, Chris Baker, and Mike Collins unpack the urban legends, the gossip, and the speculation to reveal a remarkable true story about life, death, dreams, and the reality of humanity's greatest exploratory achievement. Texas, 1872. With the Civil War over, exploration has resumed in the territories to the west of the Mississippi, and the geologist Stingley is looking to capitalize. Together with photographer Oscar Forrest, who catalogues the terrain, and their young assistant, Milton, Stingley strikes out into territory that might one day support a new civilization. But this is no virgin land. As the frontiersmen move west, it becomes clear that the expedition won't go unchallenged. Stingley has led them into a hostile region: the native Comanches' last bastion of resistance. The Smell of Starving Boys is an intense Western about the clash of two worlds: one old, one new; one defined by rationality and technology, the other by shamanism and nature. In 1899, performing in the drawing rooms of London's elite, Isadora Duncan (1877-1927) was already laying the foundations for modern dance. Her performances were visceral, free-flowing, and expressive; she danced barefoot. In Isadora, Julie Birmant and Clément Oubrerie capture the astonishing life and scandalous times of the so-called 'Mother of Modern Dance' from her arrival in Europe to her tragic death in 1927. This extraordinary graphic novel spans Duncan's meetings with Auguste Rodin and Loie Fuller, her dazzling on-stage career, and the development of a style of dance, inspired by natural forms and Greek sculpture, that would become her enduring legacy. In 1976, David Bowie escaped the frantic madness and substance abuse of his life in Los Angeles for the Wall of the divided city of Berlin. With his friend Iggy Pop in tow, Bowie quit drugs and created LOW, the first album of his 'Berlin Trilogy.' But even here, in some of the happiest days of his life, Ziggy Stardust would not let him go... LOW follows Bowie's forays through West Berlin's revolutionary music scene and wild club life, and takes us deep into his recording sessions at Hansa Studios. The friendship between Bowie and Iggy drives both artists to new creative heights, while Bowie's relationship with the cabaret artist and drag icon Romy Haag illuminates his fascination with Berlin as a city on the brink.
