More than four hundred years ago Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) sent his irrepressible optimist of a hero out to tilt at windmills - and Don Quixote and his philosophical squire, Sancho Panza, still remain among the world's most popular and entertaining literary figures. In this adaptation of the Cervantes' classic, Rob Davis uses innovative paneling and an interesting palette to bring the Knight-Errant to life. This is sequential storytelling and art at its finest as we follow Don Quixote on his search for adventure and chivalrous quests - and he will not be defeated by foes such as logic, propriety, or sanity! Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, The Thin White Duke: David Bowie had an extraordinary talent for reinvention. But at the beginning of his career, he made the most significant transformation of his life: from 'David' to Bowie. In 1969, shortly after the release of his first hit single, David and his girlfriend Angie move into Haddon Hall, a sprawling Victorian villa in the London suburbs. Part commune, part creative hub, the house becomes home to a community of musicians, hippies, and hangers-on. As egos clash and parties get out of hand, David keeps writing: 'Changes,' 'Kooks,' 'Life on Mars' - songs that will propel him to global fame. Charting Bowie's personal life, the development of his music, and the transformation of his image, Haddon Hall is an evocative portrait of a young artist presiding over a musical revolution. In 1933, folklorists John (1867-1948) and Alan (1915-2002) Lomax roamed the southern United States in search of songs. Equipped with a portable tape recorder, the father-and-son team visited churches, plantations, and penitentiaries to seek out and record the raw, authentic sound of American folk music. From ballads to work songs, ragtime to blues, the songs collected by the Lomax family on this and subsequent expeditions formed an archive that preserved the heritage of American folk music. Frantz Duchazeau's graphic novel is at once a fascinating portrait of 1930s America and a captivating story about a father and son who, despite many differences in outlook and approach, were united by a commitment to cultural preservation and a passion for music. In 1895 the Lumière brothers invented the cinematograph. Less than a year later, 23-year-old Alice Guy, the first female filmmaker in cinema history, made The Cabbage Fairy, a 60-second movie, for Léon Gaumont, and would go on to direct more than 300 films before 1922. Her life is a shadow history of early cinema, the chronicle of an art form coming into its own. A free and independent woman who rubbed shoulders with masters such as Georges Méliès and the Lumières, she was the first to define the professions of screenwriter and producer. She directed the first feminist satire, then the first sword-and-sandal epic, before crossing the Atlantic in 1907 to the United States and becoming the first woman to found her own production company. Guy died in 1969, excluded from the annals of film history. In 2011 Martin Scorsese honored this cinematic visionary, 'forgotten by the industry she had helped create,' describing her as 'a filmmaker of rare sensitivity, with a remarkable poetic eye and an extraordinary feel for locations.' The same can be said of Catel and Bocquet's luminous account of her life. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

At the heart of the dream city of Engelstadt stand the tall storys of an ancient apartment block, home to a nightmare labyrinth of corridors and secrets. Christmas is coming, but the mysterious disappearance of one of its tenants causes a cast of characters (or suspects?) to be assembled before us. An elderly aristocratic widow plays the piano; a young mother disciplines her hallucinating son; a photographer pursues creative experiments under the magnetic spell of the moon. And meanwhile, as a dark cloud threatens to envelop the city, and caped crusaders (or marauders) wander its park, there is a film screening to attend. The eccentric Professor will surely solve the enigma on Christmas Eve... or will he? A Pan-European Pandora's Box of narrative Russian dolls and Chinese boxes, Edifice builds into an Expressionist graphic vision of our archetypal, metamorphic shadows. Gerda stands at the window of her nursing home, looking up at the stars. A question has been haunting her for years, but until now she's managed to avoid it: Has her life been a happy one? Gerda remembers her life as a bespectacled schoolgirl, bullied for being smart. She remembers the time she spent as an aspiring astrophysicist. And she remembers, most powerfully, that one summer, the summer of her life, when she was forced to make the most difficult decision of all: between her career and her relationship. The Summer of Her Life is a poetic, touching, and profound graphic novel that grapples with life's big questions. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

The King in Yellow: a play that brings madness to all who read it. Irresistible and insidious, it lures the reader with its innocence and dooms them with its corruption. In a series of interlinked stories, Robert W. Chambers's classic work of weird fiction shows the creeping spread of the play's macabre touch. I.N.J. Culbard's deft and unsettling adaptation, newly reissued, breathes life into Chambers's influential masterpiece, expertly revealing the malice and mayhem that await those unlucky enough to turn the wrong page. Musician, novelist, poet, actor: Nick Cave (b. 1957) is a Renaissance man. His wide-ranging artistic output - always uncompromising, hypnotic, and intense - is defined by an extraordinary gift for storytelling. In Nick Cave: Mercy on Me, Reinhard Kleist employs a cast of characters drawn from Cave's music and writing to tell the story of a formidable artist and influencer. Kleist paints an expressive and enthralling portrait of Cave's childhood in Australia; his early years fronting The Birthday Party; the sublime highs of his success with The Bad Seeds; and the crippling lows of his battle with heroin. Kleist's graphic biography, like Cave's songs, is by turns electrifying, sentimental, morbid, and comic - but always engrossing. (immagine) Categoria: Books: graphic novels

Genius, eccentric, exhibitionist: There is no shortage of adjectives to describe the great surrealist painter Salvador Dalà(1904-1989). Yet this iconic artist and controversial thinker remains a figure shrouded in mystery. Plunging into the Spanish painter's unbridled, fantastical universe, graphic novelist Edmond Baudoin takes us on the trail of a man known as much for his talent for self-promotion as for his bold and extraordinary work. He emerges with a convincing personal vision of the man behind the artist. Dalàis a graphic novel of rare brilliance, which captures in beautifully expressive detail the life of one of the world's most instantly recognizable painters. A Chinese Life is an astonishing graphic novel set against the backdrop of the creation of the People's Republic of China in 1949. This work chronicles the rise and reign of Chairman Mao Zedong, and his sweeping, often cataclysmic vision for the most populated country on the planet. Li Kunwu spent more than 30 years as a state artist for the Communist Party. Working with Philippe ?ti?, the artist has created a memoir of self and state, a rich, very human account of a major historical moment with contemporary consequences.
