by Eric Nolen-Weathington & Various TwoMorrows Publishing takes readers into the art studios of some of the Modern Masters of the comic book genre! Jerry Ordway's acclaimed artwork has graced comics from All-Star Squadron and The Adventures of Superman to Wildstar: Sky Zero and The Avengers, and he is equally renowned for his scripting. Frank Cho began his career with the newspaper comic strip Liberty Meadows, then made the leap to comics, first with Image Comics then with Marvel and The Mighty Avengers. Dinosaurs were the rage in comic shops in the 1980's, and no one did more to make that happen than Mark Schultz, the acclaimed artist of Xenozoic Tales and Cadillacs & Dinosaurs. Mike Allred's Madman, a pop culture kaleidoscope of a comic, made him a fan favorite, and with projects like X-Statix and Red Rocket 7 Allred has continued his madcap exploration of the comics medium. Each artist sits down with Eric Nolen-Weathington for interviews as TwoMorrows' Modern Masters series provides career retrospectives, unpublished artwork, and insight into what made these artists the modern masters they are! In the 1980s, writer Steve Gerber was embroiled in a lawsuit against Marvel Comics over ownership of his creation Howard The Duck. To raise funds for legal fees, Gerber asked Jack Kirby to contribute to a benefit comic titled Destroyer Duck. Without hesitation, Kirby, in his own dispute with Marvel at the time, donated his services for the first issue, and the duo took aim at their former employer in an outrageous five-issue run. With biting satire and guns blazing, Duke 'Destroyer' Duck battled the thinly veiled Godcorp (whose infamous credo was 'Grab it all! Own it all! Drain it all!'), its evil leader Ned Packer and the (literally) spineless Booster Cogburn, Medea (a parody of Daredevil's Elektra), and more! Now, all five Gerber/Kirby issues are collected. relettered and reproduced from Jack's unbridled, uninked pencil art! Also included are select examples of Alfredo Alcala's unique inking style over Kirby on the original issues, Gerber's script pages, an historical Introduction by Mark Evanier, and an Afterword by Buzz Dixon. Behind an Alex Ross cover painting, the frantic first issue of Comic Book Creator features an investigation of the oft despicable treatment Jack Kirby endured from the very business he helped establish. From being cheated out of royalties in the '40s and bullied in the '80s by the publisher he made great, to his estate's current fight for equitable recognition against an entertainment monolith where his characters have generated billions of dollars, we present Kirby's cautionary tale in the struggle for creator's rights. Plus, CBC #1 interviews artist Alex Ross and writer Kurt Busiek, sports a color gallery of Will Eisner's Valentines to his beloved, showcases a joint talk between Neal Adams and Dennis O'neil on their unforgettable collaborations, as well as throws a whole kit'n'caboodle of other creator-centric items atcha! The American Comic Book Chronicles continues with this volume about the 'Golden Age' of the comic book industry. It was a time when America's entry into World War II was presaged by the arrival of such patriotic do-gooders as Will Eisner's Uncle Sam, Harry Shorten and Irv Novick's The Shield, and Joe Simon and Jack Kirby's Captain America. It was when teenage culture found expression in a fumbling red-haired high school student named Archie Andrews. But most of all, the first five years of the 1940s was the age of the 'packagers' when studios headed by men like Harry A Chesler, Will Eisner, and Jerry Iger churned out material for a plethora of new comic book companies that published the entire gamut of genres, from funny animal stories to crime tales to jungle sagas to science-fiction adventures. After being relegated to the realm of children's literature for the first 25 years of its history, the comic book industry experienced an unexpected flowering in the early 1960s. A celebration of that emergence, Marvel Comics in the 1960s: An Issue-by-Issue Field Guide to a Pop Culture Phenomenon takes the reader from the legendary company's first fumbling beginnings as helmed by savvy editor/writer Stan Lee (aided by such artists as Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko), to the full maturity of its wild, colorful, offbeat grandiosity.
