In the years following the Spanish Civil War, tens of thousands of Spanish civilians were unjustly executed by the brutal Franco regime. One of these poor men was José Celda, who faced the firing squad in 1940 and was buried in a mass grave in Valencia. Over seven decades later, his daughter Pepica, through years of persistence, convinces the government to exhume his grave and restore his dignity. Amidst Pepica Celda's personal battle against oblivion, she discovers the crucial role of Leoncio Badía. The local gravedigger during those tumultuous years, Leoncio risked his life to help the widows of those killed in the war and after to identify their late husbands' bodies, record the location of their graves, and hide messages among their remains for future identification. Small acts of kindness and humanity that gave hope in a bleak era. A powerful collaboration between the award winning cartoonist Paco Roca and notable journalist Rodrigo Terrasa, The Abyss of Oblivion is a vital work of historical memory. (immagine)

While Bernard Krigstein’s groundbreaking work at EC Comics has been reprinted numerous times, his substantially larger output for Atlas has been unfairly neglected. The 78 stories in this volume – the vast majority restored from original photostats – will fully rectify that oversight, and provide a greater understanding of the achievement of this often-misunderstood graphic-storytelling pioneer. Krigstein was the only Golden Age artist with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, and he approached the black-and-white idiom of comics from the perspective of a student dissecting the drawings of the old masters—in this case those old masters included Jack Kirby, Mort Meskin, Alex Raymond, Jerry Robinson, and many others. Already a seasoned comic book veteran when he arrived in mid-1951, Krigstein’s two-year tenure at Atlas can be seen as a vital bridge to his artistic maturity. Story by story, page by page, he stretches and refines the Atlas house style expected of its artists to its outer limits, then defies that convention to forge the personal aesthetic he’ll continue to refine at EC. After EC’s collapse in 1956, Krigstein returned to Atlas to create his final body of work in comics: 29 short-form experiments demonstrating the infinite possibilities inherent in the art of graphic narrative. “I used them as a medium for dramatizing the breakdown technique, to show the limitless ways that a comic book story could unfold. I wanted to show that the form was fluid and dynamic and should not be considered a static form.” Guest editor and Krigstein biographer Greg Sadowski’s introductory historical essay traces the arc of Krigstein’s development and his efforts to elevate the stature of a medium that was dismissed as disposable juvenile escapism. An alcoholic beneficiary is tasked with looking after his teenage son for a weekend. A nurse is faced with a violent altercation after her late-night shift. A single mother struggles with the sudden onset of crippling back pain while trying to keep her drug-addicted former partner at bay. A homeless man tries to readjust to life on the outside after a period of incarceration. A young father succumbs to boredom and lust. These are some of the lives of the inhabitants of Bedford Street, an all-too-familiar place where those at the less fortunate end of the ever-widening spectrum of inequality reside. People leading modest lives in challenging circumstances where disenfranchisement is high and a sense of community is low. All packed together and teeming with a chaotic energy, some submitting to their worst impulses, others trying their best despite it all. Bedford Street forms a mosaic image of lives lived in the maelstrom of a cost-of-living crisis, increasing rates of unemployment, and an age of individualism where isolation and alienation is rife. Murray’s skillful storytelling and combination of pathos and dark humour explores how we navigate life and care for one another in a disconnected society. (immagine)

"By George" is a 500-year-old exclamation used to express astonishment; a euphemism to avoid naming a divinity. A fitting title for this collection of classic comic art—both astonishing and, in its own way, divine. In 1913, George McManus was already a successful cartoonist with over a dozen hit comic strips to his credit. That year saw the debut of his signature creation, Bringing Up Father, soon to become an international sensation—the most popular comic strip in the world. In 1918 it appeared as a Sunday feature in full color, full-page splendor that is now, along with the artist's earlier works, recreated by Sunday Press. This volume displays the long career of George McManus, from his early days as an artist for the St. Louis Republican, to his ground-breaking work for Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst in New York. Early features like Panhandle Pete and Nibsy the Newsboy show McManus as one of the "Founders of the Funnies." With The Whole Blooming Family, The Newlyweds/Their Only Child, he pioneered the type of family-humor comic strip that led to the sitcoms of radio and television. This form reached a peak with the battling (yet loving) spouses, Jiggs and Maggie in Bringing Up Father. The story behind the over 150 strips found in this collection is related in great detail by historian Paul C. Tumey in his detailed biographical introduction. McManus and his wife, even more so than his characters, were the toast of society, both at home and abroad, which added to his fame and the popularity of the strip. The book's foreword by internationally renowned cartoonist and designer Joost Swarte offers an appreciation and a description of the important influence of McManus on European artists, including Tintin's Hergé. Educator and historian Eike Exner chronicles McManus's Asian connection as one of the main American influences in the development of Manga. Completing this comprehensive volume are photographs, illustrations, and memorabilia highlighting the long career of one of the world's greatest cartoonists—making his readers laugh at his characters (and themselves) for over half a century. McManus has a well-deserved place in the pantheon of American cartoon artists, but never before has had a comprehensive collection of his work. Now, By George, here it is! (immagine)

Welcome to Meläg. Located somewhere between dreamland and the real world of Redila's childhood hometown in the Philippines, this eerily fantastical town is where love, joy, and heartbreak hold hands. Here, a father builds a clunky wooden robot for his daughter to dance with at her wedding; a little boy rubs a mystical lamp and wishes only for a jar of sugar; a little girl finds a magical box and soars over the treetops in her tricycle; a man waits at the bus stop each day for years for his soulmate to arrive. Slices of life at turns tender and tragic that cast a kind eye toward the misunderstood and different among us. Filipino American cartoonist Bong Redila first introduced readers to Meläg in 2022, and this new edition expands and deepens his enchanting vision with over 150 pages of new material. Drawn in a spidery, Edward Gorey-esque pen-and-ink style, this charming collection will transport readers of all ages. (immagine)

Charles M. Schulz’s beloved comic strip Peanuts has largely been collected and reprinted in black and white. But many who read the comic strip during its original newspaper run remain fond of its brightly colored Sunday pages, which made for a surprisingly different and fulfilling reading experience. Our Peanuts Every Sunday series collects all of the Peanuts Sunday strips, scrupulously restored and re-colored to look better than they ever have. These gorgeous, oversized softcover editions allow fans and new readers to immerse themselves in Schulz’s timeless masterpiece. The second volume in this series, Peanuts Every Sunday: 1956-1960, closes out the strip’s early, more experimental beginnings. This collection offers a fascinating peek at Schulz’s creative process, as iconic characters such as Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Schroeder, Linus, and Lucy quickly evolve from their initial renderings to the elegant stylizations we've all come to know and love. Peanuts — beloved characters, iconic gags, drawing that finds beauty in its economic ink line. Fantagraphics is thrilled to publish Schulz’s glorious creation, bringing our team’s design expertise and impeccable production values to bear on the most popular comic strip of all time. (immagine)

In 1958, established Argentine comics creators Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Alberto Breccia worked together on their first significant series. In Sherlock Time, retiree Julio Luna buys a beautiful home for much too good a deal. There have been strange disappearances, but the trap is far stranger than a simple haunting in San Isidro. Fortunately for Luna, a mysterious man saves him in the nick of … Sherlock Time! The two team up, outwitting aliens, solving seemingly-supernatural crimes, and investigating cursed objects. These episodic adventures, ranging from SF to horror to mystery, ran concurrently with Oesterheld's legendary comics serial The Eternaut, and set the stage for their masterpiece, Mort Cinder. Of Sherlock Time, Argentine author Juan Sasturain (who also wrote Perramus, which Breccia would go on to draw) concluded: "rarely has a story made us so fully happy." (immagine)

In Shintaro Kago's vision of history, Genghis Khan's empire was not built by soldiers and warhorses — but rather the animated severed hands of giants! From there, the history escalates at a fever pitch, as the demand for these giant hands sweeps across Asia and Europe and become indispensable for modern life as transportation, labor, power. In time, the hands mutate into other limbs and body parts and are utilized for far more destructive and sinister purposes as the world descends into a hyper capitalist, war hungry hellscape. From the bestselling mangaka of Dementia 21 and Brain Damage comes a vicious satire of humanity's relentless greed infused with the gleeful body horror, visceral detail, and off-the-wall antics that have delighted and disgusted Kago's readers. Part sketchbooks, part biography, part tutorial, part memoir—Hal Foster’s Prince Valiant Sketchbooks are an unprecedented revelation of Foster’s personal life and creative process during his final nine years on the strip, as well as a fascinating look behind the curtains as Foster coached and interacted with his chosen successor: John Cullen Murphy. Beautifully, meticulously designed and produced with the full participation of the Murphy family, this series is a testament to author and Prince Valiant historian Brian M. Kane’s research prowess and determination to bring Foster’s aesthetic and storytelling strategies to light. Over the course of these volumes, Kane annotates with painstaking clarity and thoroughness 366 penciled layout pages, 40-character sketches, and 577 text pages of Foster’s descriptions of each panel. Also featured are an additional 143 pieces of art, mostly by Foster, 100 photographs detailing his life and career, and 123 personal letters and notes, all adding immeasurably to this exploration of Foster’s life and art, as well as his collaboration with Murphy. Breakdown Press are excited to bring Anna Haifisch’s The Artist back to print in a new omnibus edition, collecting both the original 2016 graphic novel and it’s 2019 follow-up, The Circle of Life, along with additional strips including the brand new Bird Opera. Now readers can experience the whole story in one hilarious and heart-wrenching volume, exposing the absurdity of the fine art world as experienced by a young artist. Anna Haifisch’s idiosyncratic, episodic comic chronicles the formative years of a young artist, satirising the exclusive, ephemeral and absurd world of fine art with all of its arcane protocols and quirks. Plagued by doubts and anxiety, the artist confronts constant setbacks and tantalizingly occasional glimpses of success. Based on Haifisch’s own experiences as an illustrator in both Germany and the USA, The Artist is a sharp and self-deprecating comedy that will resonate with anyone who has ever tried to make art. In The Artist, Haifisch has exposed the very nerves of what it means to be an artist in a world of ever shifting rules and complications, to hilarious and insightful ends. (immagine)
