A GIANT-SIZED BOOK reprinting the original Thun’da comic by Frank Frazetta with remastered vintage colours, limited to 600 copies! Also included is the whole comic in black and white to better appreciate Frazetta’s fine line work. Plus samples of the original artwork, some reproduced at actual size. Frank Frazetta was only in his early 20s and he was already producing some excellent artwork for various comic book publishers during the 1950s. We are including a showcase of some of his work for Magazine Enterprises, the publisher of the original Thun’da comics, plus the history behind the comic and other related work that may have inspired the series. Foreword by William Stout. The reproduction of the artwork has never been more faithful, down to the exact Ben Day colour tones as those used in the original comic. Off-register colours have been corrected, but other minor mistakes by the engravers have been maintained, only reproduced on better quality paper. (W) Peter Meriton (A) David Wright. In the early 1950s David Wright made an unusual career move for a successful commercial and pinup artist – he turned to comics. An early product of his new direction was the strip Judy, which he began in 1953 with John Hunter (writing as Peter Meriton) providing scripts. Judy is a standard adventure strip for the time – a young, beautiful girl is thrust into danger with her partner, Ricky, and their treasure-hunting adventures take them to exotic locales all over the world in a series of loosely-plotted melodramas. Judy is not quite Carol Day, due to weaker plots and cardboard characters, but maintains a strong appeal because of the art and its adventure premise, and it was a great vehicle for Wright’s beautiful cheesecake panels. In our view, it’s a minor gem by one of the greatest strip artists to practice the art and is well worth fans’ attention. Although originally printed in black and white, the source tearsheets are scanned and printed in full colour to help reflect the original artwork.
